I wonder if anyone else watches this show and wonders how a company can put on such amazing PPV's and yet put on some of the worst television shows since the dying days of Nitro. Anyway, with the World Series taking priority, this one comes once again through the magic of TiVo...

-We open with the Angles (1) backstage. Kurt begs for Nash to be in his corner for tonight's title match and offers Big Kev an incentive. It's an 8x10 with "BFF" on it. Kurt tries to tell him that BFF is MUCH cooler than "nWo 4 Life". Nash takes exception, noting that the nWo was a shoot, and walks off hoping Sting kicks Angle's ass.
-LAX & The Steiner Brothers v. VKM, A.J. Styles & Tomko. Tenay and West hype next week's tag title match with Styles & Tomko defending against LAX. I'm shocked that's not being offered on PPV and, in fact, my screwjob sense is tingling. Finish comes when a Latino Nation member hands Homicide what looks to be Stevie Ray's old blackjack. Homicide whacks B.G. James from behind and gets the pin.
-Backstage, Sting notes that this title match isn't about the title (ummm...), but it's personal.
-Now we go to the Angles (2) backstage, Stephanie McMahon Karen Angle knocks out my eardrums. Kurt tries to calm her down and then asks her to go proposition Nash, threatening to leave her with only half his money if she doesn't. Karen walks off in a huff, as expected.
-James Storm (w/ Miss Jackie & beer) v. Eric Young in a Fight for the Right quarterfinal match. Both guys go at it for a couple of minutes until Jackie gets on the apron. Young gets distracted, but dodges an incoming Storm, who takes out Jackie by accident. Young worries about Jackie like a dope and gets a Storm superkick for his troubles. Storm gets the pin. After the match, Young has a beer. Yup.
-We go to Karen Angle (3) with Jeremy Borash, who goes into Nash's locker room to pimp herself out. Amazingly, Nash actually ACKNOWLEDGES THE CAMERA (!), noting that they can stay because they'll give him something to watch later. Karen tries to seduce him, but Nash turns her down, noting her words that she rides and dies with Kurt.
-Earlier today, Mike Tenay talks with Team 3D. Ray says they're pissed off since they lost the titles and have decided to leave a path of destruction. He says the X Division sucks because the guys are so small. Ray notes that it was the MCMG that caused the distraction in their match against the Steiners, so they're taking it out on them and the rest of the X Division. He then says that Team 3D put TNA on the map (nearly making me choke on my Oreo in the process) and none of the X Division wrestlers deserve to be employed. Ray says they'll do it simply because they can. I'm sure someone in creative will be SHOCKED when this program gets the X Division wrestlers even LESS over than they already are. Personally, I'm waiting to see if any of these guys really DO ask for their release, as has been rumored the past few weeks, just to make this angle a true winner.
-Havok v. Shark Boy v. Petey Williams v. "The Guru" Sonjay Dutt. Do I even NEED to tell you what happens here? Let's just move on.
-Crystal is backstage with Robert Roode. Roode says he only went after Samoa Joe last week because it was just business. He notes that he took out Joe, because he was the top dog in the Fight for the Right tournament and thus Roode's path is much easier with Joe out of the picture. Ok, THAT'S a good explanation and actually really smart. Roode says he's tired of seeing the same faces on top all the time. Must...not...point out...irony. He then fires back at Junior Fatu's promo last week, telling him that he'd TEACH him what his name is. Good stuff from Roode there.
-Sting v. Kurt Angle for the TNA Heavyweight Championship. Wrestling sequence fills time until Kevin Nash makes his inevitable appearance and sits at ringside in a chair. Angle's in the driver's seat after the break, but Sting makes his comeback. The fight spills outside, where Angle shoves Sting into Nash. Sting then takes out Nash. Why? Why not, I guess? As Nash gets up, Angle and Sting have a Tombstone reversal sequence that ends in an anklelock. Sting powers out and gets the Scorpion Deathlock. Nash gets on the apron, but Sting gives him another pre-emptive strike, but Angle knocks him into the ref. Angle hits the Olympic Slam and Earl Hebner comes out from the back to count the pin to give Kurt the title again. Unless even HE was expecting Nash to swerve him (and when has he EVER proven to be that smart?), Sting has no one but himself to blame for that result. Post-match, Nash tries to shake Kurt's hand, but Kurt gives him the bird instead. Meanwhile, the two refs are shoving each other, which brings Jim Cornette out.
-After the break, Cornette rules that he'll get statements from both refs and view the tape before he makes a decision regarding the match. Mike Tenay takes offense to this and berates Cornette. Of course, it's Mike Freakin' Tenay, so Cornette verbally bitchslaps him accordingly. Good for him.
-Angel Williams v. Amazingly Awesome Kong. Kong brings out a picture of Gail Kim for motivation. A nice touch, but it can't hold a candle to Victoria's infinitely cooler "Kill Bill" list from earlier this year. Tenay throws a hissy fit, leaving Don West to call this match solo. May God have mercy on our souls. Thankfully, the match ends quickly with a Kong sitout powerbomb. Squash City.
-Backstage, Abyss is throwing things and gets jumped from behind by Black Reign. Reign handcuffs Abyss and then applies a vice to his head. No, not like The Great Khali's vice. An ACTUAL vice, of course. Reign wraps things up by putting his rat on Abyss's head. If Black Reign doesn't take home "Worst Gimmick" hands-down this year, I'll lose all faith in the R.S.P.W. Awards.
-Nash busts into Cornette's office and demands a match with Kurt Angle, or else.
-Robert Roode comes down for his match, but Christian Cage decides to come out with his trusty ladder and decides to do some color commentary.
-Junior Fatu v. Robert Roode (w/ Ms. Brooks) in a Fight for the Right quarterfinal match. Ref bump comes when Roode dodges a Fatu corner charge, sending him into the ref. Roode then gets a superkick and falls on the ref, leading to both getting a Stinkface. Fatu admires his handy work and Roode gives him a shot in the nuts for his troubles. Roode then takes a chair from Ms. Brooks and looks to nail Fatu, but that brings out Samoa Joe. Joe takes the chair from Roode and whacks him with it. Fatu then makes me take back every single bad thing I've ever said about him by resurrecting the RIKISHI DRIVER~! for the pin. Man, I've missed that move! Fatu moves on while Joe chases Christian to the back.
-Backstage, Nash chases the Angles (4), but can't catch them. Kurt speeds off in a car, leaving Karen behind.
-Jim Cornette has made a decision. Since Kurt technically made the pin and since Sting the Giant Idiot attacked Nash BEFORE he could actually interfere, there's no grounds for a DQ and Kurt's the champion. Cornette then makes Angle & Nash against Sting and a partner at Genesis, with the person making the winning pin getting the World Title. Sting then reiterates that the partner will be of HIS choosing. Ohhhhh...this CAN'T end well. I have a really bad feeling Genesis will end with World Champion Jeff Jarrett.

The final count is four, count 'em FOUR, backstage segments featuring the Angles. Not as much as I expected, but three in the first hour is a little much.

I continue to hope for the best with this show, but the poor decisions by the creative team aren't making it easy. Gee, they want us to THINK the X Division is being pushed, but their ONLY segment on this show involved them getting punked out by the Dudz. And taking the title off of Sting to go back to the status quo a mere two weeks after the company's biggest PPV of the year just reeked of stupidity and is a harsh reminder of what happened after Starcade '97. On the bright side, score one for creative, because I actually buy Roode's motivation for feuding with Joe and am intrigued.

I do have high hopes for next week, though, as the tag title match should make for great television.

I know it's blasphemy, but I'm thoroughly enjoying Team 3D vs. the X Division. The promo last night before the run-in was solid. Ray is a great bully, and the catchphrase "why? Because we can" fits the team to a T.

The quick and lazy conclusion would see Angle and Joe reminding 3D that they held the division belt, skewering the "little boy" perception and leading to a blow-off PPV match. But this is the perfect chance to push both MCMG and Triple X, two established XD teams that can take on 3D. Whoever beats 3D will be the hero(s) of the division and can transfer that heat to their next feud.

Now, aside from an excuse for quick fantasy booking, my point is that I can't see TNA casually dismantling the largest distinction from WWE: a popular and largely unfettered cruiserweight section. The tag belts aren't involved here (unless Tomko fights Lethal a few times to cement the champs as XD guys), and the end of this angle can't be -- just CAN'T be -- another squash win for Team 3D.

The logic of rasslin proclaims that the XD guys win out in the end. And if TNA screw this up, they lose their spot on my TiFaux. But I don't despair. I'm confident Team 3D eat a pin by a couple of little guys when this is all done. I intend to enjoy this bit while it lasts.

I think sometimes you can bury somebody too much, where even if you give them a pin at the end, it really doesn't make up for the burial they have suffered up to that point. For example, say you have 3-D kick everyone's ass in the X-Division for weeks and weeks. Would a single match totally change the perception of who got the better end of the feud? Or would that single match seem like a fluke within the context of the ass-kickings that happened every other week?

It would seem to me that if you book this where Team 3-D destroys the X-Division every week, then not only does MCMG have to go over at the end, but they would have to do so convincingly to get much out of it.

I agree; you'd need some back and forth for the blow-off match to have weight, unless that match had a stipulation that would embarrass/diminish the heel team.

And I'll be honest: I like to see a monster heel booked well, and Ray is going Lesnar Vader on the X Division.

Please let them go complete Summer of Suck '99 WCW and add the stipulation that you can pin your partner to win the World Title. 8 years later I still haven't fully comprehended how you can perform a legal pin of your tag-team partner, but, maybe we could actually find out. Make the surprise partner Sid and you would have 3 out of 4 from the original debacle involved.

Comparing worthless, boring, fat, old Bubba Ray to Brock Lesnar - or even Vader - makes me sad on the inside.

Another great example of wrestlers trying their hardest while being absolutely hobbled by lazy writing. (Total number of matches where interference led directly to the finish: all.)

Eric Young came across as a capable wrestler -- rather than (or in addition to) an idiot with a heart of gold and a lucky streak -- for the first time in a long time. Yeah, he lost, but he was hitting actual moves! Yay!

That mysterious Latino Nation member looked small -- my first thought was that it was Shelly Martinez...? It's been talked about before.

I'm a big fan of the Rikishi Driver, too, Falsie -- but it doesn't make up for the rest of him. Bleah.

I would LOVE to see an angle some time where someone says that they're going to "destroy the X Division" and then they IMMEDIATELY get their ass handed to them. I would laugh and cheer and say "hooray for the X Division."

I can only assume that they've hired Glamor Boy Shane to be a ref because they're building up to a big "ref match" that TNA apparently thinks everyone wants to see.

Awesome Kong is Awesome.

Putting Abyss' head in a vice is pretty cool. Putting a rat on the top of his head is a little silly, but the vice was cool.

So. Yeah. I dunno, I enjoyed parts of it, but it mostly left me frustrated. I think I might enjoy the company more if I only watched PPVs.

That Roode interview was great and absolutely put Rikishi's interview from last week to shame. I think Roode is another guy who has worked hard, he has just be unfortunate to be in a feud that took like 2 years.

If the X Division does come out on top then Team 3D is the perfect people to bully them. They're well known, they're great on the mic, they're good enough in the ring to keep up with the X Division and their great heels. But the X Division has to come out on top.

I'm sure Jeff Jarrett is a candidate for Sting's partner but I imagine it's actually Booker T. I know some people will complaint about adding another WWE guy but Booker is a good addition if he ends up there.

Who's music is that, King? It's omigod -- it's the Great Pumpkin! He doesn't even wrestle here!

OK, I saw the rest of the show and can comment beyond my XD wishlist.

James Storm is dead set on using every WWE finisher for his repertoire. I am not a fan of using the backstabber for a quick 2-count.

The reaction the title change was better than the match. Cornette and Tenay did a solid job, but they can't pipe in crowd noise when close-ups of the speakers clearly show people sitting quietly behind them.

Roode benefited from a great push (his manager search) that was immediately ruined by the Brooks/Young angle. He and his Terry Taylor robe deserve more than to be fed to Fatu.

I think he used it a few times before Carlito started -- I could be totally wrong. I know someone did. I'm not saying that Carlito swiped it from Storm, but that they both stole it from some indy guy -- there's I guy I have in mind but I don't remember anymore. Anyway, it's a pretty cool move.

Oh, and I am actually pretty confident that 3D will end up gettng beaten by an X-er. I do not think that the X-er will look good doing it, or at any other point.

I've yet to see an upside in TNA's continued burial of the X division and the X division champion (Black Machismo/Jay Lethal). History has proven that they won't follow through with this or put the X division over. The X division has been almost a non-factor in TNA for almost a year, when it used to be the only reason to watch TNA at all.

Kurt Angle and Sting have been an absolute joke with TNA. TNA finally puts on a good show that satisfies fans with Bound For Glory. Then in the following two shows they manage to reverse any progress made from that card.

Don't make the Professor Angry. You wouldn't like him when he's angry.

I'd love to be a fly in the wall in booking and company meetings where the people in charge reveal the ratings shows like this get (1.0 this week), and that their dumbass booking ideas are smart.

Yeah, that was my reaction too. I'm thinking Del Rio's either getting his title shot on free(ish) television or they're going to drop it entirely for the time being. Why?
