Let's talk a little bit about Nigel McGuinness. As of a few days ago, the "IWC" believed he was going to the WWE, and pretty much everyone was taken by surprise when word leaked out that he was at the TNA tapings and was in fact debuting on TV.

The basic story that I've read in the usual places is that WWE wasn't happy with Nigel's physical state -- because of his history of injuries, including bicep problems and concussions, I guess. Because of that, the WWE pulled their offer (or maybe "lowballed" McGuinness, but word on the street is that that's less likely) and TNA scooped him up.

Rumor has it that several TNA folks (including Vince Russo and Dixie Carter) are "fans" of McGuinness, so we'll see if that's reflected in the coming months. Hopefully the ostensibly lighter TNA schedule will help him remain healthy.

Okay, on to the show!

Kurt Angle is out to cut a promo. He starts out heelish -- saying that the Main Event Mafia was never about "protecting his spot" because, as the best in the world, he doesn't need that sort of protection. He turns face by the end of it, though, saying that he's learned that the young guys (naming Eric Young, AJ Styles, and Matt Morgan) really do have what it takes, and they've earned his respect.

Rhino is out and can't believe his ears -- why, management is trying to force the veterans out of the business! They brought in Bobby Lashley and tossed Rhino aside like an old "bloody towel." It would be pretty funny if this angle ended with Rhino getting fired.

Team 3D is out -- they are peeved because Rhino cost them the Tag Belts at Bound for Glory. Rhino says he did it to get their attention, because they're in the same boat he is -- he notes that they're not on the card for tonight's show.

Styles and Daniels are backstage with Lauren. They announce the Main Event for Turning Point -- Styles vs. Daniels vs. Samoa Joe for the World Title! Some people may wonder why Joe and Daniels get title shots after losing their matches at BfG, but they pretty much flat-out say that they just want to re-create the Unbreakable 2005 Main Event, "the greatest match in TNA history."

Amazing Red vs. Homicide: This is a non-title match. Homicide attacks while Red's coming down the ramp, including a clothesline that sends Red ass-over-teakettle onto the concrete floor. Once in the ring, it's mostly all Homicide. Red mounts a brief flurry culminating in a Code Red (flipping sunset powerbomb) but Homicide kicks out and there's the GRINGO KILLA for three. Don West is sad.

Scott Steiner tells Lauren that there will ALWAYS be a Main Event Mafia as long as he's around, and also that he'll take out "Mike Morgan." After being corrected, Steiner sputters, "Matt Morgan? Then who's Mike Morgan?"

Scott Steiner vs. Matt Morgan: They've got a new chyron that takes up the right side of the screen and lists height, weight, and "finishing move." (For the rest of the show, however, the chyrons go back to the bottom, with a single random fact underneath: finisher, title history, etc.) On the way down Steiner pauses to proposition Kristal Lashley, sitting ringside, who demurely turns him down.

Morgan and Steiner trade a few standard moves until Steiner gets bored and goes outside to hit on Kristal some more, this time grabbing her hands and running them over his pecs. This brings out Bobby, who whomps on Steiner for a while and tosses him back in the ring. Ref Earl Hebner allows it -- Tenay suggests it's because Steiner brought it on himself, but I think Earl's got a soft spot for Bobby -- this is the second time he's let Lashley interfere.

Anyway, Matt Morgan hits the Carbon Footprint -- that's his finisher, according to the chyron, which never lies, and so that's good enough for a pin.

Kevin Nash & Samoa Joe vs. AJ Styles & Daniels: Joe is announced as representing "The Nation of Violence," and Nash is given no affiliation. Daniels and Styles are announced as being from "Best Friendsville." Alright little match with a nice move or two. Joe went out to ringside and Styles moonsaulted him from the apron, which meant that Daniels had no one to tag. Nash took advantage of Daniels' confusion to chokeslam him for the pin.

Nash announces that he's gunning for Eric Young while Daniels and Styles argue in the ring.

Young is backstage with Jeremy Borash and points out that he's easy to find. He also announces that he'll have another announcement "next week" that will shake TNA to its foundation. "Veni -- vidi -- vici."

The Beautiful People debut their new "reality show," "The Meanest Girls," and they start a food fight with Taylor and Sarita. I guess catering keeps a good supply of WEAK SAUCE, 'cuz it was all over this skit.

Raisha Saeed vs. Awesome Kong: This came about because Saeed screwed up at BfG and cost Kong the title. In earlier promos, Saeed said that she knew Kong better than anyone, and Kong said, "NO MORE ORDERS. NO MORE ORDERS."

This is basically a squash, although interrupted briefly by Saeed getting a fameasser on Kong while both were on the second rope. Kong shakes it off and kills Saeed with the Implant Buster for the pin, then drags her up the ramp and Awesomebombs her off the stage through a lower stage section. Saeed gets stretchered out and that may be the last we see of her. Taz is concerned for the safety of the locker room now that Kong has destroyed her own handler.

Rhino vs. Hernandez: Brother Ray is on commentary (Brother Devon stands behind him) for this and he and Taz trade some good-natured barbs. Taz tries to explain Rhino's actions, pointing out that he's "combustible." Mike Tenay seems to think that Rhino might have a point, as well. Anyway, in the ring, Rhino is a tough dude but Hernandez is never really in trouble. Hernandez wins with a (quite pretty) splash off the top rope.

Rhino attacks him immediately afterward, but Hernandez dodges the Gore and picks up Rhino for the Border Toss -- this brings in 3D to break it up.

Angle is backstage with Borash. He says he'll get a title shot at the December PPV. The aforementioned Nigel McGuinness is here, in a suit and shades! He introduces himself -- he is "currently known as Desmond Wolfe." He's a wrestler because of Kurt Angle, and he's in TNA because of Kurt Angle. Angle shakes his hand and Wolfe walks away -- smirking and taking off his glasses -- and then Wolfe charges back, laying out Angle with European Uppercuts!

Rumor has it that Angle and Wolfe will have a match at Turning Point. Here is what seems to be TNA's first official pic of Wolfe.

Lethal Consequences vs. Motor City Machine Guns: This is not only a #1 Tag Team Contender match, but it's ULTIMATE X. So soon? Wow. Well, after Sunday's match where Daniels almost broke his neck, I'm pleased to note that this is a very safe Ultimate X -- the riskiest spots anyone does is hanging from the cables by their hands and dropping the three or four feet onto the mat feet-first.

It's still a really fun match, with lots of double-team moves and reversals (two of my favorite things). After taking out Lethal with the Made in Detroit (powerbomb / Sliced Bread #2) off the second rope, Sabin grabs the Big Red X. Motor City Machine Guns get a title shot against the British Invasion at Turning Point!

Beer Money, Inc. vs. The British Invasion: Another gimmick match -- it's Six Sides of Steel. Apparently TNA management really wanted to do this match "for the ratings," so the British Invasion agreed -- on the condition that it's the only title shot Beer Money gets against them.

Robert Roode is babyface in peril for a while, getting beat down by both Doug Williams and Brutus Magnus. James Storm tags in and cleans house. There's the Beer Money Suplex on Magnus, first into the cage wall and then onto the mat. BIG Tower of Doom spot, with Williams plunging from the top of the cage back-first into the ring. (Maybe that's why they played it safe in the Ultimate X match.)

Beer Money are back up and they capitalize on Williams' distress with the DWI. Magnus breaks the count by grabbing "Slick" Mark Johnson -- and slugging him! Slick's out. The other refs run in and Hebner calls it a DQ. Tenay and Taz agree that it was the Brit's game plan all along -- get disqualified if they get in trouble, and Beer Money won't get a rematch anyway because of the stips.

Lauren tries to talk to AJ Styles, who's on his way out. Styles insists that he and Daniels weren't arguing, they were discussing strategy. As Styles is putting his gear in his car, a mysterious figure attacks him! We don't see who it is, but he looks bald, so probably Daniels?

Not Angle or Wolfe, though; Angle's in the ring and calling out Wolfe. Wolfe attacks from behind and then puts Angle on the turnbuckle and pulls him off with a cutter -- that's the Tower of London, folks. Wolfe grabs a chair and pushes it down on Angle's neck, telling him he knows that it's Angle's weakness and he could end his career right now -- but Wolfe throws the chair away, saying it's too easy, and he leaves.

As do we.

I caught the end of this and the way Angle's head hit the mat scared the shit out of me. He should not be taking moves like that with his neck. Oy.

I've been slowly paying more attention to Impact lately, usually It's just on in the background while I'm doing other things. I made it a point to watch this episode. There's still the usual things that bug the hell out of me, like the pacing. Seriously guys, you can't blow your whole load every week. A cage match and Ultimate X on the same show? That tower of doom spot was nice in theory, but why waste it in a nothing match that nobody will remember in two weeks?
Other then that, I will say this, you can't really ask for a better debut then what McGui... Wolfe got. He looks like a star right off the bat. Now hopefully they can follow through.

As a Nigel fan, I enjoyed the debut and like the new name. And you can't do better than program with Angle to begin your TNA run.

So the MEM is no more? Can't say I mind, but it seems a little anti climactic. But with BfG and this show, it seems they are really moving forward and focusing on new (Wolf), and younger (AJ, Joe, Daniels, Morgan) guys. Seems like a great jumping on place for new viewers.

Now that they have Nigel, I'd love to say I'm going to start watching TNA. With Spike HD JUST getting added to our HD package, I'm definitely much more likely to start watching TNA. But the truth is it just ain't gonna happen until NBC starts showing reruns, and even then I might watch those reruns.

How's the commentary team doing since the Taz for West swap?

This is pretty much the boat that I'm in. He's one of only two guys (Am. Dragon) that could make me watch Impact. Smartly, TNA's YouTube page singled out Wolfe and Angle's segments for me. I'll probably have to at least repay that by watching next week's show.

Since Kurt's face and Steiner/Nash/Joe are heels, I don't think the Mafia's quite over yet, especially with Steiner saying it's not and Nash/Joe teaming.

I think Impact replays once or twice over the weekend as well. Commentary has been fine but I miss West. Taz saying Desmond Wolf 'looks like this Nigel McGuiness guy he knows' was fantastic.

I don't think they do the replays anymore. For a while, I was DVRing the Saturday morning show, and I know that one isn't on anymore.

CRZ, I think Taz is doing his usual solid job, but I was actually finally enjoying West as a heel announcer. But Taz is still an upgrade.

I believe Spike did away with the replays in hopes of bringing the regular time slot's ratings up.

I also believe this hasn't worked.

I've only seen this McGuiness guy once and he was alright. For TNA to bring him in and immediately rework their program having him come in and work with their top guy... that is quite impressive and it makes me want to see more of him.

I can't wait to see his first full match... I just hope Russo doesn't fuck this up.

Forget it Josh... it's Cerebustown.

So, after a year as the company's tippy-top heel, running roughshod over everyone and doing no one-on-one jobs of note, Angle's now a face? Man, HHH has got nothing on this guy.

I'm excited for the Turning Point ME, but they need to start actually BOOKING towards these great matches, rather than spending all their creative energy on Eric Young.
