Was it me or did that last part of L&O just absolutely come out of nowhere last night....

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
The last thing Serena says to Arthur after he tells her she's been fired is "Is it because I'm a lesbian?" and Arthur shakes his head no and that's the end of the episode

It wasn't so much shocking as it was just completely random, especially since they only talk about the characters in tiny bits on that show. Although in the end she was towards the bottom of the L&O Assistant DA Babe Power Rankings.

I missed the first 10 minutes of the show, so I thought I must've missed something "lesbian-related" in the beginning when she said that. I guess not.

She's still hott, but she has been getting on my nerves for awhile, always arguing with Arthur & McCoy. I kept find myself yelling "WHOSE SIDE ARE YOU ON?!" at the TV almost everytime she was on-screen. Maybe she comes back in the new L&O spin-off?

I am looking forward to the next hottie they bring in to replace her. McCoy knows how to pick 'em!

It was totally weird. Hadn't he just explained exactly why he was firing her? And what's he gonna say when she asks that question? "Actually, yes, I hate lesbians."

I thought it came out of left field too, but I just saw something about how it's apparently supposed to connect back to earlier in the season where they fought to nullify a gay marriage and Serena was against it. And that's where they started piling on the tension with her and the boss that led to the firing. Supposedly. Who knows. Hopefully "is it because I'm a lesbian?" will catch on and become a standard response anytime somebody gets bad news.

Yes, exactly, thank you!

I'm totally cool with the character being gay (although it became a moot point five seconds after it was revealed), and it was not unreasonable to wonder if conservative Arthur might have a problem with it, but this was a completely nonsensical way to bring the issue up.

Also, Arthur seemed so shocked by the question that I couldn't tell if he was thinking "Why on earth would I fire you over that?" or if he was thinking "You're a WHAT?"

This was pretty strange. Throughout the entire run of this show, they have hardly ever dealt with any of the characters in a intimate way, be it relationships, homelife, personal problems, etc. They have always simply focused on them doing their jobs. I feel that's why the show maintains it's freshness, as they can introduce new characters and they are defined by how they do their jobs without radically altering the dynamic of the show.

This ending felt forced and tacked on, very un-L & O.

One thing that occurred to me about the ending is that it really only works on a show that's in extensive reruns, and that might have been a motivation for that twist ending. Because, like it or not, everyone who watches Law & Order reruns on TNT is going to be watching Serena Southerlyn episodes that much more closely and wondering, "Was that lesbian-y?" If anything, it adds a little something more to her character and a hell of a lot to her acting, which was less animate than a pile of stones.

This is a brilliant suggestion. Count me in. At this point, I'm going to be trying to work this into conversation whenever appropriate.

Know I've been remiss in watching this season, but I saw the last half-hour, and it seemed like good ol' Dick had to throw in something from absolutely nowhere. No buildup, no reason to happen... yup, kinda sums up the show lately. (Except being a lesbian isn't exactly ripped from the headlines.)

I read somewhere (newsgroup I think, and I can't find it) that people have thought Serena was a lesbian for a while now, There's a whole group of show recappers that write down every little hint of a personal life that comes out every episode, and Serena's never talked about a boyfriend, and (and I actually remember this) she's always talking about "a girlfriend in college" or "I was out with my girlfriend". Of course, that can be taken many ways.

EDIT: Also, the episode with gay marriage (and her being mad at Jack for trying to overturn gay marriages) this season (?) might have been a hint.

Hell, people were speculating right up until the end whether or not Claire and Jack were aardvarking (they were).

It would be interesting to know if they planned for her to be a lesbian from the beginning, or if the buzz generated by fans made them think "hey, why not?".

It should probably be noted that virtually every TV show has a subgroup of fans who suspect/wish/desperately hope that one character or another is gay. I would imagine the note-taking is specific to L&O since that franchise notoriously avoids those details. But the part where people speculate on sexuality is universal.

My guess is that she wanted out career wise (she's on the ESPN mini-series about poker). However, that out of nowhere ending allows some story plots/subplots to allow her back in.

IMO, she was the weakest of his assistants.

Different chick. Tilt = Kristin Lehman; L&O = Elizabeth Rohm. They look very similar, though.

(ding)

She did quit to pursue other opportunities. Like a bit part in Miss Congeniality 2?

And it does seem like they do that a lot, leaving open possibilities for returns. They did have that one ep that flashed back to the first season, then brought in a bunch of people who were there (although they didn't have the continuity going full steam, as it seems Cragen got promoted on SVU but was in his old rank on the Mothership).

You know what though, that's the kind of crap that happens everytime. People completely block out what you're telling them and draw their own justifications that they can live with rather than be forced to listen to your critisism. That makes this the most realistic piece of writing the show's done in about 3 years as far as I'm concerned.

It's too bad though, I was really starting to like Rohm on Angel until she left there, and now was really starting to like here on L&O too. Oh well, I guess I now know not to get too attached to any future characters she plays.

I loved the New Michael and wondered if maybe the show should have just gone with him as a replacement. It was a perfect tribute to the character-writing and performance. He would so be into "Gangnam Style".
