My interview with Brock Lesnar came out today. Thanks for all the advice you gave me when I was hunting for questions and angles to take. You'll notice, though, that I chose to ignore 99% of the advice, and did an interview that made my editor and myself happy. The result - I don't think I'll be getting a Christmas card from the Lesnars this year, but I think it's a good interview nonetheless.

Sounds more like you should be worried about Joe getting your address.

Nice job.

I'm shocked you didn't ask him to demonstrate some moves on you.

Wow. That was a pretty cool interview.

Frankly, I think it's something Brock and "the boys" will laugh at more than be angry with. I mean the interview was really informative. The opening paragraph did a good job at establishing Lesnar's character and just how big of a superstar he is in the company. You told it like it was, and it's not like you didn't have proof either. It's not like you asked him about a sex tape. Ha.

The WWE PR department...that might be another story.

Excellent work though. Great article.

Portland Mercury, never heard of that paper. How big is it?

The Mercury and the Willamette Week are the 2 weekly papers here. Circulation about 50,000. You know, it's got the entertainment guides, movies reviews, alternative news, etc. Free at coffeeshops and video stores, places like that.

For the record, I love this part:

"WWE rep Joe Villa interrupts: Chas, it's Joe again. That's just speculation

Actually, Kidman said all this on (WWE's webcast) Byte This. "

Good job on the interview though. From your introduction here I was expecting non-stop questions about grabbing guys by their wieners for press-slams, but it came off pretty well for the time it looks like you were given. I think they only weak part was staying on 'the kiss' a little too long, but the opening was great (which someone here already talked about), and I don't know if there's a better way to end it then with Brock saying he's coming to fucking kill someone.

Nice job. The more outrageous bits were backed up by fact and the WWE rep clearly wasn't interested in having them pursued. Don't know where you'd heard about the Fox and the Hound, but hey, Disney has a broad fanbase and I can't imagine he was expecting that one.

I whole-heartedly agree with Tribal Prophet that there couldn't be a better way to end the interview. :-)

Cute article.

I once asked Percy Pringle (Paul Bearer) the question about wrestlers 'stealing' each other's moves, and he reacted just about the same way. "It's all made up by the websites." Kidman's remarks came out a few weeks later.

Excellent article. I really mean that. It's not often that the little interjections from PR flaks are documented, in any industry, let alone WWE.

Brock seemed like an okay guy, who wasn't afraid to answer your questions. Sure, maybe he forgot about the makeout incident, but if it happened to you, wouldn't you try your best to cover that up?

Anyways... excellent interview. Much better than the "I've been wrestling for this long, this is my character and wrestling is a really tough business" stuff that we see in 99 % of interviews. Nice work!

I didn't listen to Byte This when Kidman was talking about Brock stealing the Shooting Star Press, but I had always assumed it was an in-character thing. Wasn't that about the point where it looked like Kidman was going to come back as a heel, hanging out in the audience with several female friends?

I actually saw the quote from Kidman on some graphic or another the WWE had posted on their website with the best quotes from Byte This for the first half of the year. That's why I presumed it was a kayfabe thing. But like I said, I never actually listened to the Byte This interview to get the proper context. Is there anyone here who *did* listen to the actual interview and not just read a transcription?

just wanted to point out that the Observer took notice of your article and posted a link to it today. Here's what Meltzer had to say:

--The Portland Mercury at www.portlandmercury.com/current/feature.html has an interview and story on Brock Lesnar. It was previewing the weekend house show in Portland building up the Lesnar vs. Chris Benoit main event (which, as it turned out, became Lesnar vs. John Cena). The article was well researched, talking about how "Now that the Oregon Boxing and Wrestling Commission has lifted its inane ban on pro wrestling" (pro wrestling has been held regularly in Oregon since the beginning of time and there was never a ban). But it gets really funny as Joe Villa, a WWE rep on the line, kept trying to interject himself. They asked him about Kidman being mad about Lesnar doing the shooting star at Mania, and Villa said, "that's just speculation." The author then said, "He said it on Byte This." They also asked Lesnar both about kissing Angle in front of the fans, and backstage matches between the two, with Lesnar claiming that he always wins.

==============

Just thought i'd let you know! Of course, the link is being spread now through most of the other copy and paste news sites so I guess alot of people will be checking it out in the coming days.

Very good article. As others have said, it's nice to see someone actually ask original thought-provoking questions, as opposed the usual boring "company line" ones.

I found it hilarious that WWE's ridiculous interview chaperone system has been exposed, and funnier that he denies facts that were announced for the most part by WWE themselves (Byte this)

In closing, you get the impression that Lesnar was the type of guy in school who'd dunk your head in the pisser or stuff you in your locker. Good job on drawing out a modicum of his real personality. (That of an impatient psycho jock) All due respect to the man, of course.

Really, thanks to everybody who read that and enjoyed it. I've been writing semi-professionally for several years now, but that's definitely the piece that makes me happiest these days.

After the interview, there was an eerie silence from the WWE. When I called Joe Villa about getting some tickets, he said "I can't wait to se the interview on the 20th." All I could think was "that's what you say now..." This was, of course, before he knew that he would be part of the printed interview., and that I would be including the pieces he said I shouldn't.

I was completely nervous that when I got to the live event, I wouldn't have any tickets, or they would be the worst in the house (i.e. what I usually buy). To my happiness and surprise, the WWE hooked me up with seriously sweet seats, on the floor, almost at ringside.

And Brock didn't murder me, or as my editor suggested, kiss me to death.

Good article he's lying about beating Kurt through. In Power Slam they reported that Kurt and Brock had an amateur wrestling contest and Kurt won just by a close decision i don't know if they had a rematch through because this was in december last year

Good work. I love the fact that you kept the comments from the flak in there. That's the most telling thing of all. I did a similar phone interview with Goldust in 97 for a semiweekly I was writing for, and there was no flak on the line. Maybe if a few more stories like yours come out they'll go back to that more honest approach. For a company that has bitched quite a bit in recent years about free speech, they sure do like to exercise a lot of control.

Does anyone agree that if you were to paint Brock Lesnar green, he would be a spit for The Incedible Hulk. That's in the film as opposed to Lou Ferrigno's version !
