The geniuses at AOL/Time Warner have decided that Atlanta Braves telecasts do not have a national feel to them, thus they have decided to remove Skip Carey and Pete Van Wieren from this season's TBS Broadcasts. Now, first of all, if anything has been been proven in the past few years, anything AOL/Time Warner says will improve the product will instead make the product weaker. Also, do they think the public will think its a generic national game instead of Atlanta Braves telecasts? I mean, I know AOL/Time Warner is that stupid, but the general population will catch on that its still Atlanta Braves broadcasts when they are in every game in the package. And last, and certainly not least, the Ernie Harwell precedent from the early 90's states that when you take away a folksy homer announcer like Skip, the viewership reaction is hostile. Sure, Skip was a homer. But, if you didn't like the Braves, he gave you additional reasons to root against them and watch the game. With idiots like this making decisions, its not surprising Ted Turner has lost most of his fortune.

I agree completely...when Skip is one of the reasons I actually enjoy watching Braves games, because he's a homer. I hate the Braves, I just like baseball.

Actually, Skip was one of the reasons I began hating the Braves as much as I do... loved to hear him when the Bravos were getting blown out.

It's a shame to hear this, though - now why will why I hate them? (Oh yeah, Chipper - 'scuse me, Larry.)

Leave it to AOL to take away two of the few announcers that actually show some personality.

I think this is a good move. Ted's not in charge any longer - they don't need to try to forcefeed the Braves down our throats to make them "America's Team". If anything, this makes it more likely that I will watch some of their games.

Ah, who am I kidding, I get over 140 padres games on local TV here. I'm not gonna watch anyway :)

Scary thought: There's a guy who already does announcing for the Braves, and whose voice is associated with national telecasts. ::shudder::

Please tell me that they've announced who is taking over, and it isn't him.

I think "he" is not going to be doing it. If "he" is, let's hope we get Mike Tenay with him.

For right now, its Joe Simpson and Don Sutton. However, I wouldn't put it past them to throw 'him' out there at some point during the season. And, if its a blowout, throw David Crockett out there with him.

Exactly...

I think the last Braves game I watched in it's entirity was about six years ago when I lived in St. Pete, FLA... and they were playing the Padres. I have no reason to watch them again unless the locals aren't showing a Padres/Braves game.

(I should have mentioned that the Channel 4 Padres games are only available on Cable - not Dish or broadcast. OK!)

I seem to be in the minority here, but I absolutely hated the Skip Caray and Pete Van Wieren team. I thought their call was boring and put me to sleep because there was way too much dead air. Also, I think that good announcers can (and should) educate their audience. I rarely watched a Braves game and felt that I had picked up a new insight about baseball history, strategy or even the Braves themselves. Good move and now I might be able to turn the sound on when the Astros play the Braves.

Well, if all else fails for Prior, he can always go back to his old gig: running a gallery with comic book drawings and plotting train wrecks in order to find the exact opposite of himself.
