You know, after I flipped off the TV and stormed downstairs to play videogames last night after the 5th run scored, I began to get a little perspective.

I have been going to games at Wrigley and other places (now, mostly to minor league games at Slugger field in Louisville), I have never ever had a chance at a foul ball. I agree that the fan (and the other 3 or 4 guys whose names DIDN'T get put in the paper, should have stood aside.

But I can understand being caught up in the moment. I feel bad for the guy. The Sun-Times is going to destroy him, all over a game. The Cubs lost that game for a number of reasons last night, and this fan interferance was part of it. But not much of it. Go Cubs

Well you know something, Mean Gene...
Lost in the controversy: why didn't Dusty Baker gather the team together and settle them down after the fan interference?

I agree with that idea, one little screw-up in the 8th inning should not have had that much effect on the outcome of the game with the lead they had. They had time to get their heads straight and finish strong but they didn't.

After watching Game 7 last night, I think Florida was just the better team. It would have been cool to see Boston and Chicago in the series but that can't be blamed on one kid.

Speaking as a Red Sox fan, on Game 4 there was a ball that Jeter hit that was going into the stands, Nixon went over to catch it and everyone scattered like cockroaches when the light goes on to let Nixon catch it. THAT IS BEING A FAN!!!!!

I don't condone violence ( I agree with Swordsman when Dusty should have went out there and taken a few minutes to calm his team down) and I will try to be as politically correct as I can when I say this....I know how every Cubs fan must feel right now (being a Sox fan)....but did anyone notice that the dumbass actually had his hand on Alou's glove? He really should have been paying better attention to the game and should have realized that Alou had a shot....I dont want to see the guy get hurt, but I can understand the frustration the Cubs fans have, I will probably be banned but geez let people freaking vent and get it out of their system, on WEEI (sports radio) here in Boston you always hear some f'up call up talking about how he is going kill half the Yankees team (its just frustration), I am not saying its right but its just someone venting, is it the brightest thing to say? No, but people say stupid things when they are pissed and frustrated.

Furthermore, the only people that would understand frustration like this are Sox and Cubs fans, if you are not a diehard of one of these two teams, you really dont understand the anger and frustration of losing year after year after year and being so close so many times (and watching those frontrunning, holier than thou, divine right of kings Yankees fans brag how they won once again)...once you are a fan of one of these two teams, you will then begin to understand the pain

And as for the guy who feels its "just a game", yeah it is, but what are your hobbies? Do I have the right to trivialize and rank on what you enjoy? I mean if you ever listen to the computer geeks talk about Unreal Tournament, you would think its a life/death struggle every game...anything in life can be trivialized except for family and having basic necessities (food, shelter, clothes) in my opinion

If it leads to actual death (or injury) threats, then yes you do have a right to trivialize and rank on what I enjoy (just because I may enjoy something a lot doesn't make it important in the grand scheme of things). People do say stupid things when they are pissed and frustrated. Unfortunately, they also DO stupid things when they are pissed and frustrated, and that is where the problem lies.

And if your hobby leads to years of anger and frustration, may I suggest that you get another hobby because it doesn't look like this one is working out for you.

I think waht's been lost in this discussion is that the Cubs had a chance to go to the WS long before the infamous play.

Had they taken care of business in game 5, there is no game 6 (or 7).

Blaming the Cubs' collapse on the fan is idiotic and short-sighted, and I hope he sues the Chicago Sun Times, I know I would.

A heel turn would also be cool, fuck Chicago, he should move and do a national interview where he talks about how dump the Cubs fans are and how happy he is to get out of a city that believes that their sports team was cursed by a goat.

And if things couldn't get any weirder, Kevin "King of Queens" James will play him in the movie: (sports.espn.go.com)

There can't possibly be THAT much interest in this, can there? I mean, by the time this comes out, who outside of Chicago is even going to remember the guy? I can see the commercials now:

"Hey, remember that guy that caught the foul ball in that playoff game last year? We made a movie about him! With Kevin James! Opening Friday!"

"If you're wowed by the prescience of 1993's Demolition Man-which mentions a President Arnold Schwarzenegger-consider this: The Chicago Cubs are now facing the Miami-based Florida Marlins in the baseball playoffs-much like an utterly far-out scenario predicted in 1989's Back to the Future Part II, which had the Cubs winning the World Series over "Miami". Too bad no one said anything about the Red Sox."

I'm a die hard Red Sox fan, but would never wish harm on someone or hope they "feel bad everyday". Game 6 in 1986 broke my heart, but I truly feel bad for Bill Buckner who, in 2003 STILL has to hear about that ground ball. The man had a good career yet will be forever remembered for that one error. It's time to forgive, forget, move on...
