Nope, not in the least. When the man was ON, he could be wildly entertaining. When he was feeling pissy, I thought he was dreadful. And that was before he decided to be pissy to his wife.

I don't know about anyone else--I'm not calling for a boycott, and heaven knows there are plenty of male entertainers who do bad things to women. But when I see Austin swing a fist against someone again, I can't guarantee that I won't feel just a little bit sick to my stomach. He is liable to get me off the sofa and into the kitchen with the disposal running like nothing else in wrestling, with the possible exception of the return of Katie Vick.

No, the TV won't go off, because I'm not the one with the remote control. I can't even swing a household blackout of No Way Out. But every time something like this comes along--and this is REAL, not dumb skits with mannequins--it takes a sharp bite out of my enjoyment of wrestling, and that stinks, because I love wrestling.

I wish Austin, Vince, and JR had all had the grace and class to keep the man serving his probation in Texas where he belongs. Yes, I know--contradiction in terms.

Okay, it's too obvious that that whole Vick thing was terrible. But can we PLEASE stop uttering that bitch's name? The more I think of her, the more I think of the month I nearly dumped MY MASCOT for good! Uh, sorry about that outburst, but I think we already know about the rock bottom, more than we really wanted to.

We sure do. ;-) No, I won't utter her name again if I can help it! I just want to make the point that there is a *genuine* horror show about to start. I didn't even see the mannequin skit, because I noticed the spoilers in time, thank goodness, and deliberately skipped Raw for the first but far from the last time in my history of watching wrestling. At least I don't have that mental picture to contend with.

It's a little more difficult to do that with police matters. At least the man got slightly more than a slap on the wrist.

Well, I wouldn't be thrilled by the return anyway. I completely agree that when he was pissy he was dreadful. But I personally never found him anywhere near wildly entertaining -- moderately amusing in short bursts was about the best I ever got with him. I certainly acknowledge that he could move around a crowd with the best of them (Hey! There's something I could have added to the "Say Something Nice" thread!), but a beer swilling, bird-flipping redneck never floated my boat.

Clearly all of the wrestlers are portraying characters, but for some of them, I think the characters can be pretty close to the real person. Austin always seemed to me to wear that character awfully comfortably. And even as a face, that character is not in any way what I think of as a "good guy". In character there were times when he was less than stellar toward Debra.

"The incident" certainly didn't improve my perception of him. Without actually knowing anything about the situation (which we don't) I can't say I was suprised by the incident.

As far as his return diminishing your enjoyment of wrestling overall, don't you think that's rather unfair to all the other guys who aren't actually assholes in real life? Probably most of them are good guys, who love their wives, are sweet with their kids, & would never do such a thing. By all means, dispose of much garbage while he's on. But don't toss away the whole thing because of one lousy guy.

I don't want to toss the whole thing. As I say, I love wrestling! I could make a long list of guys I like to see, and even a little list of women. ;-)

But I can't help but have bad associations with bad things. It's not really within my conscious control--there is only so much that I can set aside and ignore for the sake of entertainment. Entertainment is supposed to be fun, not a snake pit. If it ain't fun any more, I won't watch it and I won't discuss it. I deliberately avoid reading the usual Net gossip because I'm not interested in poisoning my brain. If the show itself does that for me, or if something happens that I can't ignore, such as the circumstances around Austin's departure, that's a black mark against my enjoyment.

This has happened to me with other shows--Star Trek is a notable example. I was a Trekkie from about 1975 to 1998, when the franchise basically died to me. I was sorry about that, but there wasn't much I could do--I couldn't stand to watch Voyager any more. The sins had piled up too deep and stunk too badly. I've got a much higher tolerance now. And heck, this is wrestling, not ballet. ;-) I don't think my standards are impossibly Pollyanna. But they are still there.

I like Austin. He was brilliant in 2001, and I think he could be brilliant again.

Unfortunately, he's not even back yet, and already it seems like the writing isn't good enough to use him well. You have the biggest star in the history of the business coming back, and you have fans who need something to cheer for. And yet, they've managed to make this "Is Stone Cold coming back?" angle incredibly dull by beating it to death and giving the viewer nothing. You have this storyline with Bischoff and teasing the return of another popular guy (Shane), that the crowd is into because it seems like a real shakeup of things. It seems like a story. But they ended this month-long story with a HUGE bait and switch, and a little "Hey, watch the pay-per-view, you might like THAT, even if this show sucks!"

As far as what' going on between him and Debra, it's not cool, but it's also none of my business. If he's trying to deal with his issues and he's kicking the bottle and working things out, that's great. It'll probably help him to come back to work. Considering the success he's attained, he's probably a workaholic, and this period of inactivity has likely made him somewhat restless.

I still think he should be on Smackdown, though. RAW is only a safe place to be if your name starts with H and ends with H and has an H in the middle.

Hm.. is this new? I haven't been around Weinerville very long, so I don't know. How many chicas do we have here, anyway? Ok, I'll go start a thread and get a discussion going. Gotta represent the estrogen!
