I was reading in the Observer today that Triple H's opponent for 'Mania is booked to win the Royal Rumble. It got me to thinking of a question that I can't answer: Who the hell IS Triple H's 'Mania opponent?
I figured that this would be the Royal Rumble card for the RAW side:
Triple H v. Shawn Michaels Dudley Boyz v. Ric Flair & Batista possibly Kane v. Booker T
So, who does that leave? Let's assume that Kane v. Booker isn't happening and they're both in the Rumble. Here's the only viable opponents I could come up with:
Kane: I believe is booked to be wrestling Undertaker at WrestleMania.
Goldberg: I believe is booked to be wrestling Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania. And even if he hasn't, Goldberg v. Hunter has been done several times now and is old news.
Booker T: I doubt they'll be pushing him that high up the card right now. Plus, he main-evented with Hunter last year, and I doubt Vince has plans for him to be in that position again.
Randy Orton: Originally rumored to be facing Hunter. But I believe the company has since decided to hold off on that match, and have Orton team with Batista to face Rock & Foley and 'Mania.
Rob Van Dam: I seriously doubt Vince has ANY plans letting RVD co-headline WrestleMania. Besides, I think they prefer keeping him on Sunday Night Heat, anyways.
Chris Jericho: The only one on the list that I could possibly see as getting the position. However, I don't know of any plans on pushing him as a main-event babyface any time soon.
So, I ask you: Who is Hunter's opponent? I've heard the Edge rumor, but I still find it hard to see that happening. So, who else is left?
(-): I don't mind the following premise p: Chris Jericho turns face q: Chris Jericho faces Hunter r: Chris Jericho MUST WIN
( -p ^ -q ) IF AND ONLY IF r

If the WWF decided to use a Super Mario Brothers gimmick...
"Mah gawd, King! Garrison Cade just bounced a fireball toward Rene Dupree!" "And look, Mark Jindrak just jumped on top of Conway's head! I think he's out cold, JR!" "What're they up to now..where did that huge pipe come from?!" "They're going down in the pipe! They're..they're gone!" --Mike Sweetser
"Oh my god, JR. Cade just shrunk after he was hit by that chair!" "Here comes RVD, King. What's that he has in that bag?" "Are those Mushrooms, JR?" "Cade's eating the Mushrooms. BAH GAWD, KING! Cade just grew twice his size!" --Mr. Tuesday
But then you're forgetting the OTHER news doing the rounds-that a SmackDown wrestler may win and STILL face Hunter for the Raw strap, through some good ol' convoluted exposition. Hence, a whole new world of possibilities is opened-up.
"You're A Big Hunk Of Hero Sandwich, And You Wanna Save The Girl!"
I was fantasy booking on another board a scenario that had all four of Evolution taking on Austin, Rock, Foley and Michaels (The WrestleMania All Stars, or whatever) in some sort of gimmick match. The reasons being: Since all four of those faces are going to be at Mania anyways why not put them in a match that means something instead of four separate 'nostalgia' matches.... plus it gives HHH something relatively interesting to do without having to put his precious title on the line.
Assuming that probably WON'T happen, who on earth are they left with.... Austin in a one-on-one? Not likely because Austin will want to go out on top in his last Mania match. HBK? Been done to death, as good as that match is. Kane, Booker, RVD and the rest of the Raw crew can't come up with special matches for HHH, seeing as he's already beat them all. Orton turning on HHH would be premature.
Assuming we stick with the Raw brand, there are only two ways Hunter can go:
Tag match with Randy Orton against Foley and Rock.
Title match against Chris Jericho.
I'm thinking the tag match may instead go to Orton and either Batista or Flair, because having HHH going into Mania as the champ is unfortunately mandatory. A month ago when Goldberg was champ and Kane was a contender, I figured HHH was out of the title picture. But things have changed. As much as I hate the guy, it doesn't make sense for him not to have it.
This leaves him to go up against a top babyface. Jericho, assuming they're not having Foley go singles, is the only option. Look at the four top babyfaces on RAW. Goldberg is gone for a while, but HHH/Goldberg has been done. So has HBK/HHH. RVD and Booker T's credibilities have been buried and a WM matchup would not work. This leaves Chris Jericho.
My only problem with that is that they need to establish him as a babyface immediately. It looks like they're taking it slow, which would be awesome if this was April-September. But this is two months before the big one, and once the Rumble kicks in, the program speeds up and they can't take their time.

Whoops! I read the Observer article wrong. It does, in fact, appear to be a SmackDown star getting the Triple H match. So I guess that opens it to a veriety of guys (Benoit, Angle, and Cena), and pretty much makes this whole thread pointless. Sorry.
For all this talk about tossing Jericho in the Wrestlemania main event with such meager buildup, I think many of you are overlooking the ideal opponent for a freshly babyfaced Y2J: CHRISTIAN.
First off, it is debatable whether HHH will put Jericho over unless fans are rabid for his win, which is unlikely right after turning face. Any yet, losing a title match to Triple H will likely kill his momentum, as well as making him a Wrestlemania loser three years in a row.
Contrast that with the benefits of a feud with Christian. When the betrayal happens (and oh...it WILL happen) the past two years of Vitamin C team-building will be turned on its head to generate heat for the feud. And Jericho has the ability to make Christian look like a Big Time Player. On the promo side, if the Highlight Reel becomes both a battleground and the stakes (in my ideal booking, Christian steals Trish AND usurps the Highlight Reel) , then both men can play to their strengths at making the match more than a mere midcard feud. AND, the beauty is that Jericho can get the Wrestlemania win, but Christian can keep the feud going, which means that when it is over, both men will be stronger for it. Essentially, Christian would take Jericho's place as Official RAW Shit-stirrer Heel, while Jericho will be in a position to command face main events.
As for Hunter's Wrestlemania opponent? I don't see why the WWE can't go with Booker T, doing the whole Wrestlemania Rematch thing. The story really is this simple: HHH thought that by defeating Booker last year, he had killed his credibility and was no longer a threat, but THE PEOPLE made sure that Booker didn't stay down. And now he's back. It isn't much, but sometimes Wrestlemania doesn't have to be...

This is arguably one of the coolest ideas I have heard in a long time....Being a Christian mark, this is exactly what Christian needs to get to that upper-mid card level that Y2J is at now
I think Benoit will win, & go on to face HHH for the World Title at WMXX. After all he has been banned from EVER facing Brock for the WWE Title again. This will be good, because it leaves a face opening for Goldberg to come into on Smackdown! and gives HHH a new opponent to face, instead of going around in circles with people he has already defeated loads of times.

This would be a brilliant match, but HBK has hinted that he will be facing Flair at MSG
The ONLY way I'd endorse a HHH-Austin Wrestlemania match would be if HHH dropped the strap to HBK, allowing Michaels to face a fresh challenger (RVD, Benoit, Booker?) at Wrestlemania, while HHH and Austin would have to make their own heat together...

OOps, sorry. I was assuming Trips would be dropping said belt come Rumble time. Which is probably quite the foolish assumption to be making.
Just a note I found out. Goldberg is out of the title picture for the World Championship anyway and if Kane was going to win he would get a rematch at the Rumble and Triple H is off on a leave to do films for a month or so so chances are: WINNER and your NEW World Champion: The Heartbreak Kid SHAWN MICHAELS which mains Hunter won't main event mania unless we see another shitty HBK/HHH or HHH/Goldberg
The two WarGames: The Match Beyond from '87 were not on PPV, but were filmed as part of the Great American Bash Tour '87, as Luger/Flair/Blanchard/Arn Anderson/J.J. Dillon (replaced by War Machine for second Wargames)
