Unless I'm reading this article wrong, these changes will have huge ramifications for the lobbying industry and Congress in general. Somebody squash my hopes before I start believing in America again.

My only problem with this bill is that the party in power can rule on whether the earmark disclosure rules have been met exclusively, rather than the senate parliamentarian. So whichever part has the majority can play dirty tricks on the other side if they choose and sneak things in if they choose.

It should be the parliamentarian

Well, you wouldn't expect them to vote *against* something like this would you?

Actually, if this bill's vote went 8-411 (the other way), I'd have more faith. When a mid-term election costs a billion, how much is the real election going to cost? And who is paying? I'd prefer not to have smoke blown up my ass, but it's all in good humor anyway

Sounds good, but remember that the majority are lawyers and I imagine they already have the loopholes figured out and are set.

And while not all earmarks make sense, they aren't all bad. This is a political boady and as such they play, you know, politics. Where I do agree is that these pols need to disclose what's going on.

You poor, naive soul.

If they don't follow the laws we already have, what makes you think they'll follow new ones?

The fact that there's all new ones to violate? We're never going to see a really clean Congress, barring the Potomac suddenly changing course and Aegean stabling the House and Senate. Best we can hope for is "acceptably dirty", as long as the laws on the books get enforced.

The NAB opposed the merger because it would create a monopoly. Why was the NAB's opinion considered relevant or even listened to? Because the NAB is SatRad's competition. *head hurts* It's not a monopoly just because the delivery method is different....
