HTML Gurus...I call upon your wisdom!

Currently on my website, I have links set up so that when someone clicks on something, it opens up in a new window. However, with the rising popularity of TABS, I'm interested in seeing if it's possible to program a site to open new pages into separate tabs as opposed to pages.

I've found that when I use Firefox 2.0, regardless of whether pages are set to open to pages, they open in new tabs. I like that.

So, is it possible to set up progamming to open in tabs that will be both compatible with both incarnations of Firefox, IE, and any other browsers that work with tabs?

I'd be willing to set up a separate page for IE, Firefox, and others if necessary, if the code for one is incompatible with the other.

Thanks again, everyone!

I don't think that you can. You can set the target, but what the browser does with it is beyond your control.

There might be browser specific javascript you could use.

Like Guru said up there, that behaviour is handled on the client (browser) side. If the individual user sets preferences to open new pages in tabs instead of windows, you shouldn't have to change your code at all - but there's no mechanism to force a page to open in a new tab as opposed to a new window, because the server doesn't care about that - it only knows "new target" but not necessarily what that target (window/tab) is.

Without having been to your website: why do you want the links to open in new windows anyway? That generally annoys the crap out of me if its for no apparent reason.

See, it annoys me, too. The main reason I have it as such is for my page to be open still while someone checks out a link (external, I might add) that I've placed on a page. Its similar to when someone clicks on the random post on the main page: the old page pops up in a new window.

Well, I have it set with the A HREF tag ending with Target="_blank" so there should be a way to set it up otherwise.

I don't doubt that someday soon there will be HTML and JavaScript specifications introduced for opening new tabs, just like we have now for opening new windows. But as far as I know it hasn't been done yet. So while it's a good idea and I think it will happen, for now you'll have to settle for opening new windows and hoping that the user has set his tabbed browsing preferences to open new windows in tabs.

I disagree with you, actually. Why should we force a user to either open up a new window or new tab when they might not want to? The way it's set up seems perfect to me. Everyone can open new links in whatever way they prefer.

As it is, I get annoyed with sites that don't allow me to right click. I understand the reasons why some sites do it, but it makes it so that I can't right click a link and automatically Coralize it, for example.

Both videos (the SONY and Apple ones) were probably the funniest things I'd seen in some time. It's bizarre, but I'd never really heard about THE ONION before, just that they've put out a couple of books and a movie.
