I was talking with some friends about the Avengers movie and we started speculating on what stories will be used for future movies. It was fun to hear everyone's ideas and I thought it'd be interesting to get the thoughts of those here as well.
Here's how I would lay out the rest of the Avengers movies:
(I'm assuming another round of solo movies before two back-to-back Avengers sequels. I just came up with that basic plan, as I don't have any idea what the rumor mill says about it.)
Iron Man 3 is already supposed to be the Extremis story. That's a great idea because these characters all need a big story for the next solo movies if they are going to live up to Avengers. Iron Man especially could use a change after 3 movies of the same thing. I can't wait to see what the Extremis armor looks like on the big screen.
Thor 2 brings in Beta Ray Bill and some other cosmic/space characters get involved. This would be a fun story and would help set up future stuff. Thor's not usually a great solo character, so this movie should be loaded up with goodies.
Not sure how they'd do the setup, but Hulk 2 would be not be called Hulk 2. It would be called Planet Hulk and it would win every Oscar on the planet. In both of these stories it's easy to show Thanos pulling strings to remind us of what's coming.
Cap 2 follows Brubaker's run and debuts the Winter Soldier. Steve Rogers should still be taken out of commission, though not necessarily in the same way. Bucky takes up the shield in the closing scene.
Avengers 2 uses World War Hulk as a basic storyline, but the real climax comes with Thanos attacking Asgard and finally getting his hand into his precious glove.
This leads directly into Avengers 3: The Infinity Gauntlet. Steve Rogers returns, has his classic scene against Thanos, and the Avengers save the universe. And the end of every theater showing they shoot off fireworks and give out free comics.
After that I don't care because there will have been enough of these things for my lifetime.
Anybody else have any Avengers fantasy booking to share?
I know nothing about the Extermist storyline, so I will opt out on that one. If anything, we will see the Infinity Gems in play. I expect Banner to cameo in it as well as maybe Manderian played by Ben Kingsley to have one of the Gems only to lose it later. Probably a good spot to throw Wasp and Ant Man as Tony's new R&D team.
Thor 2. I expect Loki to get a more cameo appearance and interrogation scene on who he is working for. Once the Asgardians realize its Thanos, Odin either hides the Glove or sets Thor and Co. on a quest. This leads to Thor searching out for Adam Warlock, the Titans and fingers crossed Silver Surfer. At the same time giving more hints about him and Sif. They will probably fight some alien threat like the Skrulls or Kree. Thanos might pop in at the end to steal a gem or two.
If Thanos shows up, he may kick Thor's ass to show how tough he is, maybe even kill one of the Warrior's Three or Sif. Then pop out. Thor returns to Earth to warn them.
Cap 2 will probably deal with Winter Soldier, Hydra or Baron Zemo and a returned Red Skull looking for the Gems or uses the Life Gem to bring Bucky back to life. We hopefully continue to get the man out of time storyline for Captain America to come to terms with it. I suspect Fury or Widow or Hawkeye to cameo. Captain America gets the gem from Red Skull only to lose Bucky in the process. Captain America questions his leadership only to see Thor warning him about Thanos.
If Ant Man comes to fruition, I expect him to work on Ultron and have to get some of the Avengers to help him out. No one is really going to Ant Man film. Make it Avengers 1.5 with Fury, Banner, Tony and Widow. Janet and him get into the team as Cap and Thor walk into warn them. It would also be a good place to maybe tease the FF.
Avengers 2. Have Thanos just steamroll their ass in the beginning to get the Gems. Maybe Thanos kills Wasp or Hawkeye or Widow. Its a big enough threat to call in the FF or Spidey or heroes we see on Fury's desk we tease in other films like in Iron Man 3 or Cap 2. Warlock shows up or even Dr.Strange to transport them to fight Thanos who is ready to begin his new empire with the help of the Skrulls or Kree. Giant fights and a lot of the team feeling out of place fighting a God. Movie ends with Warlock getting the gems only to cast them to the stars. Maybe begin the Hulk dissension and have him leave.
After that. I'd go with Hulk 2 with finishing up the Leader stuff that was left on the table. If you want have Thing vs. Hulk or have Hulk rip apart a city so bad getting at Leader that it causes the heroes to question its ok to have him around. Perhaps an appearance by Fury, Reed and Tony discussing this.
I would also suspect they would take a break from solo movies and just do Avengers 3 with Kang and have a giant time travel story. Have Cap going back to WW II, Tony meeting his father and other emotional points that Kang uses against them. If anything else, I would make Avengers the every third year Summer movie event ala Harry Potter, adding heroes and villains here and there. Keep Captain America, Fury, Thor and Iron Man maybe even Hulk. Rotate the others til you do Civil War with Tony dying instead. Then end the series. By that time, RDJ is going to be near his sixties and it would make sense for his arc to end the series.

I think I want things more spaced out than you samoflange.
And honestly, I also think, given hulks on-screen success in avengers, that we should be able to get planet hulk.
I think the best way to do it is have avengers 2 end with the team defeating the enemy, and then having hulk freak out. Stop with a cliffhanger. Open Planet Hulk with a solid 20 minute battle of the avengers having the subdue hulk again, and launching into planet hulk from there.
It might be cheating, but it also might be what it takes to get people to go see planet hulk. Don't forget how much John Carter bombed. People are going to be resistant to seeing a whole movie that takes place on another planet. Having it tie into the Avengers is what it's gonna take to not lose it's shirt.
If you do Planet Hulk, you are going need to bring in guest stars. I mean they shoved Silver Surfer in the books. I just think Planet Hulk maybe too much unless Thanos sends him there. He did send Hulk and Dax falling through Time, so its not unbelievable to send him to another planet during the fight. Thanos getting rid of Hulk early would keep with the books and give the audience, an Oh Shit moment with the Big Gun gone. It would also solve the problems of dividing the fans over the Avengers going after Hulk.
I still contend if they are going to do Thanos, they are going to take time out to explain the Gems. Also, the Gems themselves would make for a lot of great plot devices for Mandrian, Red Skull and Leader. It would also kind of cool to have a Marvel Quest ala Lord of the Rings.

Think you guys are moving way to fast. I'll do a mix of what I'd do and what they are likely to do.
IM3: Extremis. Pretty much set in stone. Probably a Banner cameo. I'd love to see Hulk Vs Hulkbuster Armor Tony, but it doesn't really work with the movies since they are best buds.
Hulk 3.0 - Hulk is gonna be so popular, I think they'll do this next. I'd call it something like the old Hulk TV movies like Revenge of the Incredible Hulk or Return of the Incredible Hulk. I like the idea of Planet Hulk down the road, but not yet. I'm thinking Hulk Vs Leader. Maybe even have Iron Man help. The Ultimate Human storyline had Hulk and Iron Man taking on Leader and was a pretty cool take.
Thor 2 - No way Beta Ray Bill could be done without coming off completely retarded. Much like the first set of movies, I think this will be one that ties things in with the next Avengers. I expect it'll set up Thanos and the Gauntlet. They may have the gems already in it to save a lot of time.
Cap 2 - Winter Soldier. Probably with a slightly different origin with Hydra involved instead of the Russians. Don't think they'll kill Steve, just have him help Bucky come back.
Avengers 2 - Thanos has the gauntlet and the crew has to stop him getting some or all of the gems. Movie ends with the glove shattering and each Avenger getting a gem. Somehow Thanos sets them all off and we get:
Planet Hulk - Because the space gem warps him there.
Iron Man 1602 - The time gem gives us a take on Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court.
Cap 3 - With the Reality Gem Cap is sent back home to 1942. Will he stay or does our time need him more?
Black Widow gets the soul gem and must atone for all the people she killed.
Ok, the rest are hard to fit and the Widow one is a stretch...but damn if I wouldn't pay to see the first 3.
Iron Man 3: May 13 Thor 2: November 13 Cap 2: April 14
Given that they definitely haven't started writing anything for a hulk or avengers movie,I think it's unlikely we'll see anything as big as those in the summer of 14, like we saw Cap and Thor. I was about to say maybe something smaller like hawkeye or black widow for that summer, but I think it should/would be ant-man. So much has already been done on that, they could easily get that out in 2 years.
I think that very well might be it until avengers 2. I'm already surprised that Thor 2 is coming out in november, I'm sure they'd want to go with a may release date for avengers again, so May 15.
Also, I don't know the complete timeline of Winter Soldier, but I feel like it would be more powerful if he winds up in Cap 2 fighting by Cap's side (and then in Avengers 2), and it's later found out that he's the Winter Soldier (I'm thinking about something like Bourne Identity here).
Unless they are 1000% sure it will work, they should not do more movies outside of the 3 established ones and maybe another Hulk one.
I think I read a few weeks ago that they don't want to mention the Avengers too much in the solo movies, but try to tell their own stories.
I fully expect hints at Thanos to be in Thor 2, since the gauntlet was in Asgard's vault iirc. I'm sure I read that they'd address the Jane/Thor romance in #2 as well. But I'd actually like it if part of the movie was spent in other realms. There's much more to show of the world tree and its realms. And not everything and everyone needs to be/look hostile.
Cap 2 should probably be flashing back and forth between WW2 and present time, to show he is still a bit out of time. This means it'd require another WW2 villain. Maybe Zemo? I think it'd be too early to go full-on on Winter Soldier but dropping some hints would be interesting. Have them do a failed assassination on Cap at the end of the movie and then we find out it's Bucky.
A Cap movie is also the best place to introduce any new hero characters that they might want to use in Avengers 2. Have him pop in at SHIELD HQ, have Fury mention a shadow team, like in the Ultimates.
Also, Sharon Carter comes to mind. Though maybe Mariah Hill can stand in for her? That'd be a nice twist (and it takes away the slight weirdness of "the old lady's not available so I'll go for her daughter/niece/whatever she is these days"
Iron-Man is also a good place to show a shadow team. Or introduce Pym and his science. I wouldn't even mind if they have him create Ultron for the government, skipping him being Ant-man/Giant man.
What about a SHIELD movie? I don't know that Hawkeye or Widow could carry their own movie, but throw them together with Nick Fury and Hill and that could fly. Plus you could use it for most of the setup for Avengers 2 and leave the other movies as standalones.
I think they have to avoid stretching this concept too thin, at least at first. We're already 6 movies into this, how much longer can it go before the quality starts to suffer, people get bored of it, or actors want to move on?
It's in Marvel's best interest to blow everyone away with the next few years of Avengers-related movies to firmly entrench themselves as THE superhero movie franchise. To do that things have to stay tight and in control. Smaller side stories can be done once Marvel, Avengers, SHIELD, Stark, Rogers, and Banner are household names on the level of Harry Potter and Luke Skywalker. I really want to see Marvel go for broke here and try to create the first fully cohesive 12-part blockbuster movie epic.
Considering how much they are going to take in from Avengers, I doubt they will go broke. Disney stock also hit a good number too this week. They just have to be careful which fanboy storylines they intend to do. Winter Soldier is fine and probably Extremists. The Infinity Gauntlet and Planet Hulk maybe too out there. That is why they have to lay groundwork for it. There is a ton of material they can pull from, but they also have to realize that not all of it is good or ones the audience will get. Aliens are not much of a problem for people, but going into what the gems do as well as Hulk being stuck on an alien world is going to be tough.

Thread ahead: What rapidly-prepared food are you addicted to? Next thread: Worst Single Episode of a TV Series? Previous thread: Are there any W "regulars" that have NEVER been into professional wrestling (and still aren't)?
I loved this episode as a finale. It introduced a fascinating new character, opened up the universe even wider and then made it clear that the crew was still out there, still flying. From a storyteller's perspective, ending on that episode was genius....
