This was a great April Fools joke, guys! Ok, so when are we getting the REAL series finale?

What?

Oh...really?

(Clearly marking this thread "spoilers," since we're going into season finale territory here.)

Wow, this finale was...truly awful. I don't even know where to begin, other than what the hell did I just waste the last few years watching?

What was the entire point of teasing the big Barney/Robin wedding two years ago, using a filler season to show how much Barney had grown up and matured and fallen in love, using THIS ENTIRE SEASON for their wedding day, only to immediately throw it in trash in the first half of this finale and turn Barney right back into the same womanizer he was before? That whole thing was a colossal waste of time!

But that doesn't compare to the joke of setting up the mother, making us all like the mother, showing how much the mother got along with the rest of the crew, and then killing off the mother so Ted could get back together with Robin. That's not only a waste of time, but it's insanely cruel.

This has to rank up there with one of the worst final episodes I can remember. I can't remember the last time I walked away from a show's ending feeling angry, upset, and unsettled. Hell, this entire final season is a complete dud, just because you can literally (not even joking) skip THE ENTIRE FIRST 21 EPISODES, because none of it matters!

What say you all?

It's weird. I always thought that Ted should end up with Robin. Almost wanted it to be a Ross & Rachael type of thing.

While I ultimately got what I wanted to happen. This season and the finale is not at all what I wanted to see. I'm not angry.... I just don't think I can recommend the show to people like I used to. The payoff is horrible.

Agree that this whole season was a waste.

I must be in the minority but I liked it. I always wanted Ted and Robin to end up together and they did. Ted wanted a family and wasn't getting it with Robin. So he found someone else even though he always loved Ted. Robin loved Ted but never wanted a family. She wanted a career. When she knew Ted could not give her that, she went to plan B - Barney - the one guy she knew would never want kids. They settled. It did not mean they did not love their spouses, it just meant they were not their first choices. And while you do not see this a lot on TV, it happens in life all the time. Everyone has the one who got away...it does not mean you do not love the one you are with. And instead of breaking up two marriages, they waited and eventually, they came back around to each other again. Robin got to live her life as a famous news person who traveled the world and experienced life. Ted got the perfect mother for his kids and someone to experience "family life" with.

But with his wife dead and Barney out of the picture, everything fell together for them to come full circle - blue french horn and all - and continue their relationship. No cheating, no breaking up a family, no dating weeks after a divorce/death. Just waiting for the right time for two people who have wanted to be together to finally get together with no obstacles in their way.

Will they get married? I doubt it. Robin gets to continue her career while Ted gets his family.

This season was good, but not great. It was almost like they planned to end it last season, got a renewal and had to scramble for a plot line. I did like that the majority of the season covered only a weekend, but it was rushed a bit.

It will be a favorite of mine for some time. I really enjoyed the show and all the jokes - slap bet, the bang bang song, cock-a-mouse, and all the catch phrases. The chemistry between all five was great and the actors, during dramatic parts, were excellent.

This ending was like the Sopranos - you either loved it or hated it. I loved both, which probably puts me in a small minority. Of course, I hated the Seinfeld ending, so there's that.

Goodbye HIMYM. I will see you in reruns.

Life is hilariously cruel.

It ain't the six minutes... it's what happens in that six minutes.

I didn't like this finale.

I fucking LOVED it.

Well, honestly, I could have done without the Robin bit at the end. I'm fine with them getting together, but I either didn't want to see it, or I think I wanted to see another five minutes more.

The stuff with the mother tho...totally earned and fitting with the rest of the show, such as episodes like Marshall's dad dying, and Robin's episode where she can't have kids. The genius of the show was that it was just like real life.

And I have news for you, the divorce, real life. Barney not only backsliding, but getting WORSE, real life. And finally finding the girl he spends the rest of his life with. Perfect.

Sometimes people marry the wrong people, for the wrong reasons, and sometimes the right people are taken away from us too soon. That's just how it happens.

The only thing that really felt out of place was Robin becoming really whiny in there, and I was glad to hear from the kids how much they liked her. It was out of place for her character, and I was glad to think it didn't take all those years for her to come around.

Ever since I thought about the fact that this is how the series might end (I always wondered they they had never heard this story, and why she wasn't there at all to tell the story), anything other than the mother being dead seemed like it would be disappointing to me.

Tacking on this extra season was a curse, and while the gimmick was cool, it was counterproductive (to put it nicely) to the end game they were shooting for.

It was 20 years after Ted "let go" of Robin, and 6 years after the Tracy Mosby's death before Ted went back to Robin, which is a lot of time in real life, but only one month in TV time, which makes me not happy for Ted and Robin. No tears of joy from me.

I will say the actual How Ted Met Their Mother scene was killer.

The finale was GARBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE both from a written standpoint where they crapped all over 7 years of character progression and especially made moot the entire last couple seasons, and also from a viewers standpoint where we finally get to see Ted be happy only to watch her die about 45 seconds later.

It's cute and all that the writers thought of this ending 8 years ago and filmed the kids' lines for it, but it also means disregarding anything that changed with the audience as the show went along just to shoehorn in that ending.

This show spent a couple years getting people to WANT Barney and Robin to be together after it was obvious that Ted and Robin weren't right for each other. Then because they filmed the ending already they had to do a U-Turn on all that and force everyone back to how they were in season 1.

I did love how excited the kids were to talk about how their mom had been dead for 6 years, and how he should move on already. It felt as forced as everything else in this episode.

Its a mixed bag and that is being nice. I think a lot of us just gave up on Ted. He went from guy you are cheering for to whiny d-bag to everything loathsome about your best friend who wants your girl. To see him end up with Robin is a punch in the gut. At some point, I started cheering for Barney to get Robin then he got her and it was pretty great. To see them just dismantle almost two years worth of storylines to get to what I think was the original ending of the show was pretty ballsy to see.

There was some scenes in the episode, the high five through out time with the Ghostbusters line, The old woman pestering Ted about destiny and even the stuff with Ted and the Mother was good. Mom has to be the MVP of this season. She was great and I felt she was too good for Ted.

The conversation with my wife who thought the finale was a fucking joke was sometimes, the story is not for you. These writers obviously had an ending for this show and they told. Now, between the first episode and now they did a lot of great things like Barney/Robin, Marshall growing up, Lilly being well Lilly. They also did a lot of bad things like Ted/Robin, making an entire season of storylines disappear and not introducing the mom sooner.

I just know I will miss my Willow/Lilly and pray to God someone puts her in a show before I lose my mind. I also want to say fuck you to the tweeter people saying they were victimized by this show. Go to hell like now. The worse last season and finale is X-Files, don't start on this was the worst finale ever.

Count me in the negative camp. I don't think I would characterize my feelings as anger, more just disappointed. I thought we'd get much better writing than this to close up shop. Eh.

I do not watch this show but a lot of my friends do. According to the rage on my Facebook and twitter feeds from 9pm last night, they were mostly upset when the tour guide from Not Another Teen Movie hooked up with Agent Hill from The Avengers at the end.

count me in as one of those who loved it ... in some way, the whole series has been about the dynamic between Ted & Robin, so it made sense for them to end up together.

and the mom/Tracy is just cute as a button ...

I'm here as well. We basically spent the entire season at a wedding only to have the divorce briefly mentioned in passing. Same with the mother - here's 9 seasons of build up to their meeting - and now she's dead (which they never really did say outright - just the 'mom has been gone for 6 years' bit). These moments really deflated the whole episode for me.

Although the internet rage on both pro/con sides is pretty entertaining...

The ending was crappy, but the whole episode itself was a complete downer. I kept saying to my wife that we were going to get a "well actually" narration bit undoing the decade of depression. No one had a happy life except for Ted, and then the primary source of Ted's happiness dies.

They all had happy lives. Marshall and Lily had dream jobs and a heap of kids. Barney got to briefly be a good guy but have the marriage not work, dabble back in his old ways, leading him to find the true love of his life. Robyn was, yes, the least happy, but had amazing career success before finally getting the love she truly wanted. And Ted got lucky enough to have two happy endings.

The rage at the finale is really baffling to me. Once you understand that the ENTIRE story is being told at a time when Ted had already healed from the loss of Tracy, the ending (and the story as a whole) makes total sense.

I get being mad about a season spent on a marriage that was immediately undone (though it was three years in their time), but even that didn't bother me that much.

I really don't know what to think.
I don't mind that we spent a whole season just before the wedding, only to have it thrown out. It did provide some great moments and stories (I liked this season)
I have no objections to Barney going back to his old ways (which of course means he's funny. I mean Playbook II Electric Boogaloo?! Awesome)

The main problem is that Ted and Traci (I loved that TM scene) seemed so right for one another. And Ted and Robin didn't.
The past two seasons I rolled my eyes whenever Ted gave her that look again and I hated the whole locket saga.
There's also the fact that the mother was so great with everyone in the group.
And then, they gives us a quick wrap-up where the kids speak up, Ted runs to Robin.
Sure, in their timeline a lot of time has passed, but that doesn't change the fact that Ted and Robin were always different, etc etc.

Btw, the kids were young, this was taped long ago.
This was the plan all along. Kudos to the writers for that but fuck 'em

I don't remember if it was Alan Sepinwall or the Washington Post that pointed this out, but things change over the course of eight years. When the majority of the show's fans wanted to see Robin end up with Barney and Ted end up with Tracy (and not have her killed off), the move should have been to take the kids's scenes that were in the can and shuffle them off to the Blu-Ray set to be marketed as an "alternate ending."

Ted Mosby was never likable. He's been a douche since day one.

I don't see how they crammed over 20 episodes this season with "wedding" bullshit, and then spend an hour trying to create, then tie up loose ends.

And, as somebody brought up previously, they spent so much effort making people want to like Barney so him and Robin being together would make sense, then they make him an insufferable asshole in the finale.

And, I guess I'm in the minority, I hated the mother. She seemed crammed in and forced and not that likable. She was the Cousin Oliver of HIMYM.

In the end, we got a Dusty Finish.
Whether Ted and Robin being together makes sense at all (and all his douchbaggery whining about the love of his life, they did need to end up together) is besides the point. We got led down a dead end road, and they just didn't take the time to put it together correctly.

One of my favorite shows of the recent past, and its ending seemed cobbled together.

Whoa, Whoa....Whoa! Cousin Oliver, I think not, sir. She was great. She was way too good for Ted. While, I agree with some of your points on Ted, I think you wrong are about day one. I personally got sick of Ted after he tried to get with Robin when it was obvious Barney was the better choice. I did feel bad for him during the Stella debacle. I think they missed a great opportunity in flipping Ted into Barney after that. He should have been fuck destiny and been just awful while doing what they did with Barney. Then Ted realizes what he is doing after awhile then just gives up on love especially with Robin then he meets Traci. I still think the end is a giant coup out, but they stuck with their guns even if it defied what the fans wanted.
