It was sort of acknowledged as a slow-burn throughout 1996/97. Diesel nodded to it after dropping the belt to Bret. Bret Hart quit on a live RAW in January 1997 after losing the Rumble, and was screaming at McMahon about screwing him. By the time Austin hit him with a Stunner in MSG in September of 1997, it was pretty much common kayfabe knowledge. He dropped the announcing gig the night of Survivor Series 1997, and never returned to it.
That's a good question! And I never knew the answer to that until now, though I had heard the Diesel quote before.

I also recall a strange one-page piece in an old official WWF Magazine circa-1993 or so explaining the Fed's stance against the indictment and blasting George Zahorian, Hogan, Billy Graham, and other figures in the steroid trial. As a 12 year old, I had no idea what the statement meant and was shocked when it named McMahon as the owner of the company.
I really wish I could locate that issue. I must have read that piece ten times and I could never quite grasp what in the hell it meant.

I remember this! It was printed on the inside front cover of WWF Magazine; I think it was presented as an open letter. I knew from reading Pro Wrestling Illustrated that Vince McMahon was the owner of WWE, but wasn't really aware of the importance of the steroid trials and was shocked that WWF Magazine talked about something outside of the TV storylines. And yet, I don't think I bought that magazine - I was much more of a PWI fan. I'd like to see that page today too.

The night before at Survivor Series, Diesel got pinned by Bret Hart to lose the WWF title. After the match, Diesel attacked Bret and dropped him with a jackknife powerbomb.
On Raw, Diesel came out, interrupted a match (which I want to say was Savio Vega vs. BodyDonna Skip but I could be wrong), and cut a promo that included the phrase "I'm not some corporate puppet that YOU decided to create, Vince." Back in the day, some people thought this was an actual shoot because Vince had never directly been acknowledged as the owner before.
Reading that reminded me just how much Karate Fighter noise I used to hear watching an episode of Raw, but looking back on it now I don't ever remember seeing Karate Fighters, never knew a kid or even an older collector type that was into Karate Fighters, but boy do I remember getting hit over the head with Karate Fighters during that one hour of Raw for I don't even know how long. Wasn't there even a Karate Fighters tourny that Jerry Lawler cheated in and won?
... and for not being a corporate puppet Nash still took time to endorse the 'Black Glove' being sold at all the merchandise booths at the time.
Edit: Are there other parts to this article? If so is there a way of getting to them from the first one? What do you think of this article ten years after writing it?

>I had originally agreed to submit an article for MarkMadden.com's "Greatest Moment of the Millennium" series - only I procrastinated to the point where it was too late. Then Madden had an issue of another sort with me which has been publicised elsewhere.<
I tried (not very hard) to keep this thread from getting derailed into one about me (I PM'd BigDaddyLoco a few days ago answering his questions instead of posting to the world here), but alas.
Almost simultaneous with The Mark getting his big break as a member of the WCW Nitro announce team was The Mark abandoning MiCasa for a sweet gig over at 1Bob.com. I took exception with the way Mike was getting jobbed (along with taking exception to his piss-poor job as a colour commentator) and this led to some personal emails from himself, a few veiled (and not so veiled) references on "WCW Live" or whatever the hell their website's "radio" show was called, and it was all so, so, so stupid. Bottom line is it didn't really amount to much and we both have much smaller audiences in 2010 than we did in 2000.
