On Home Movies right now (11:30 central time), did Melissa just drop an F-bomb? Is Cartoon Network allowed to say what they want after a certain time or what? How do you explain the "Shit" episode of South Park then?

My guess is that at least Comedy Central has some kind of agreement based on time. I remember during the summer they played the completely unedited South Park movie in all its profane glory, but it didn't start until 2 AM or some ungodly hour like that, IIRC. As for Cartoon Network, I'd guess that their agreement is the same, esp. for Adult Swim shows.

I remember hearing a few months ago that the FCC relaxed rules on swearing after a certain time (I think it was midnight EST). Which explains the South Park movie. What it DOESN'T explain is how "Playmakers" over on ESPN (airing at 9pm EST) gets away with the same language.

After Bono's F-bomb on network TV, the FCC game him a pass because the word "did not describe sexual or excretory organs or activities. Rather, the performer used the word 'f---ing' as an adjective or expletive to emphasize an exclamation."

Floodgates, you have been opened.

Does this make any sense? Let's say you're at a restaurant, and you see a man stagger away from the bar and walk directly into the wall, mistaking it for a door, banging his face and falling down, only to pick himself up and walk into the wall again, and then again, over and over. Would you say to yourself: "I admire that man! He is loyal to the tactic of walking into the wall, in the hope that it eventually will turn into a door!"

No! You'd say: "He must be a Cubs fan."

I could have sworn that you could show "R" rated material after midnight. Including nudity and profanity.

As long as you do all the prerequisite warnings and what not.

But I think no one does it because the sponsors would have a cow.

But I think Comedy Central is going to head the way tho!

The FCC has no regulations for cable television. The FCC only regulates broadcast materials. In other words, the FCC figures because you chose to buy cable and let it into your home, they don't have to make sure that the material is appropriate for all audiences. Cable networks are beholden, however, to their advertisers. Run a program with too much racy material, and your sponsors will likely get complaints from certain viewer groups and drop you. Premium channels, like HBO, don't even have advertisers to answer to. You pay them direct, so they air whatever they want to.

What was the context? I've still got it on my DVR, & didn't notice it...

Right at the end when Brendon was trying to convince Melissa and Jason that he really broke his arm, he showed off his x-ray and Melissa said something like "you really did break your arm! you fucker."

I had the volume down a lil' so I didn't hear it too clearly. But it surely sounded like it. If I knew sooner, I would've put the closed captioning on. heh.

I thought she called Brendan a "sucker," since she and Jason had both faked their casts.

There's no way that Home Movies is going to be the show that sneaks "fuck" onto the air...

On the other hand, I'm at least reasonably sure that Meatwad told Shake to "fuck off" at the end of the Aqua Teens a few weeks ago. (The one where Meatwad didn't know what "the f-bomb" was and kept saying "fudge" through the whole show.)

Nope. He fairly clearly said, "Fudge you, butthole!" I rewatched that bit a few times. it's just made all the funnier by the fact that he had just blown Shake sky high with that badass mech.

Yeah, I heard it as "sucker" too. Besides, Melissa wouldn't use the f-word! She's a nice girl. :-)

Yeah, "sucker". This bugged me since I hadn't watched the tape yet until Tuesday. I wanted to just enjoy the ep for what it was, but I kept *waiting* for *it*, because I'm a big loser. Though it would be funny since McGuirk got bleeped like three times earlier in the ep.

WELLLLLLLL, there was SOMETHING going on. Seeing as I am a a big loser as previously mentioned, I freezeframed on the computer monitor during that whole f-bomb sequence, and sure enough, "fucker" was right there on it and very legible. The F was on the monitor in some other form as well, either in it's standard form or with a mother prefix. EDGY.

I believe it was either with the "-'in" or "mother" optional add-on (or both) but you are indeed correct. And in that vein, Frylock's been bleeping a fair amount lately. I think it comes from hanging around with that Danzig fellow, he's not a good influence. (:

Call me naive, but how did you extract dialogue from a frozen screen image? Are you just reading the closed captioning? Is that even available?

It was printed text on a monitor... Frylock had Carl's severed head hooked up to his computer so he could see what he was thinking, which (considering Frylock was responsible for his headless condition) was a rather harsh rant. I believe violence was inferred. (:

Thanks. I didn't realize you were talking about Carl's output there. I feel so dumb cuz I remember liking that episode, but I can't remember what happened for the life of me.

Well, I didn't really spot that stuff until I'd watched it a few times myself. There was a pretty fair amount of stuff packed into that one.

And he doesn't even wear a shirt!

Actually, I've noticed some changes to both Frylock and Meatwad this season. It seems like Frylock's becoming a bit more care-free, and Meatwad's standing up for himself more to Master Shake.

By the way, I'd have absolutely loved it if they got Geddy Lee on last Sunday's episode.
