As far as Hogan being mainstream, I'm not so sure. Not that the mainstream isn't aware of it, but the general feeling I'm getting is that people are looking at it as a joke, as in "Wrestling is soooo fake, they have an old fossil like Hogan as champion." I heard some DJ talk about how Rock must be a great actor, because he was able to have a staredown with Hogan without bursting out in laughter.
It wasn't three months, but really, why should it matter? They did well with their initial push. I am certain they would excel further if there was a tag division push...but that's not something I'll hold my breath for.
