Vanilla Ice? Who was voting for this?

This episode was so much stronger than the first one. All of the acts were somewhat competent, with The Knack standing out. They sounded and looked pretty damn close to 1979. They even sounded good on "Are you Gonna be my Girl?" by Jet. Tommy Tutone was decent with Jenny, Jenny as well as the Blink 182 tune. The Motels were so-so, while Haddaway was Haddaway. He was okay. Vanilla Ice was just so, I don't even know the word for it. He played it like such a caricature of himself, I couldn't tell if he was being serious (which would be stupid) or he was just goofing on himself (which would be kind of neat).

The Knack should have won.

As for Vernon Kay - I had to look him up to see how he got this job and then I realized that they ran this same show n the UK and he was the host for that. Oh.

I loved the Knack, was disappointed by the Motels take on the Norah Jones tune, felt Haddaway had a surprisingly good voice and did a great take on "Toxic" (Britney songs sound better when other people do them... seriously, check out Dweezil and Ahmet Zappa's cover of "Hit me Baby..." sometime), was somewhat disappointed by Tommy Tutone and really dug Ice. Yeah, I wrote that...

I felt Vanilla Ice did just fine.

Tommy Tutone butchered the blink 182 track...terrible!

Hadaway freaked me out during Toxic. What in gods name was he doin'? Grinding the floor isn't hot!

I agree with most of the people in this thread on Vanilla Ice. I missed the final vote, but I would have been SHOCKED~! had anyone other than Ice won. I was impressed when he broke out the quasi-break dancer moves too. You could tell he was just trying to have fun and knew he wasn't some kinda bboy. Good show.

I thought all of them did a decent job one their own songs, with Vanilla Ice, Haddaway and The Motels sounding GREAT, but what was up with the Knack dressing up as The Beatles? The second song for The Motels, Tommy and the Knack sucked, but nowhere near as sucky as the musiciancs last week. I really can't wait to see Howard Jones.

I was all for The Knack. I thought they did a pretty damn fine job.

Did Tommy from Tommy Tutone sound a bit like Neil Young to anyone else?

Dude, Vaniller Ice dominated that show and it was obvious he was nowhere near the ballpark of taking it seriously. The rest of the performers weren't in the same league. They all looked washed up (expectedly, and I suppose that's the point of the show). I admit I cringed when he said he was gonna do "Survivor" by Destiny's Child (which would have been evidence NBC is telling these guys what covers to do) and then sighed relief when he did his own version that sounded nothing like it. Different lyrics and different chorus, complete with stupid "Old Ice" dance moves, which he couldn't do without a shit-eating grin on his face.

And if you go to this page on the show's site (nbc.com) you can guess who's gonna win next week based on the cover they're doing (especially if they're going last, which I imagine will happen). Obviously don't click if you don't want to be spoiled. I also don't advise clicking if you don't care.

The thought of Wang Chung performing ANYTHING by Nelly, but especially this song, is such a funny visual. I'll be watching this one more for the comedy value it has the potential to have.

And for this coming week on your local NBC affiliate, the performers will be:

Cameo:
Word Up
1985 - Bowling for Soup

Howard Jones:
No One is to Blame
White Flag - Dido

Irene Cara:
What a Feeling
I'm Outta Love - Anastacia

Sophie B Hawkins:
Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover
100 Years - Five for Fighting

Wang Chung:
Everybody Have Fun Tonight
Hot in Herre - Nelly

I hope Cameo or Howard Jones wins, but I am thinking Wang Chung will. Sophie B. Hawkins? Meh. I think Irene Cara will stink. I wonder if she has any restraining orders in force against any Ws?

Cameo doing "1985" might just be the colossal trainwreck that finally gets me to watch this show.

I wish they were doing their old Cherry Coke jingle, though.

Cameo was outstanding! Larry Blackmon even broke out the outfit with the red crotchpiece.

Wang Chung sounded really old and flat. I thought they'd be much better than that.

Sophie B. Hawkins sounded pretty good, but she's a little wacky in her stage presence.

Howard Jones really looked his 50 years, but his voice was really good. He was handicapped in that both of his songs were ballads.

Irene Cara was a freaking trainwreck. She was totally missing on half her notes, but somehow the crack whores in the audience voted for her anyway.

I wonder what the demographics of this audience were since they only showed young females in the crowd shots. Most of these people probably had never heard of Cameo before. They were easily the most talented performance of the evening.

All right, I thought all five acts did great. Seriously. Even the cover songs. I laughed my friggin' ass off (in a good way) at Wang Chung's cover of Nelly. They did a pretty good job!!! Sophie B. blew me away with that dress alone, but DAMN!, does she still have a great voice! I really liked how Cameo put their own funk into 1985. In ever realized their bass player was that short and was that full of zest. Just watching him alone was funny. As for Howard Jones, I've always been a HUGE fan and he still has a smooth voice, but I'd rather listen to him with my eyes closed as it makes the whole experience that much better (and if you watched him, you know what I mean), but he still did a fantastic job with Dido. Out of all of them, I thought Irene Cara was the only one who seemed a bit shakey at first, but once the beat kicked in and she hit the chorues, she showed she still had it. I don't think she should have won, tho, as her Anastacia cover had two other ladies taking the lead vocal for a bit, and I think that should have automatically disqulified her. Even still, at the end, I was torn over who should have won, (and I hate to agree with pieman), but I'd have to go with Cameo with Wang Chung a VERY close second and Sophie B. an even closer third. Great, great show and I can't wait for the replay.

    And find Travis' version too.

Travis in an alternate universe would be the greatest pop cover band ever. They also did some pretty choice work with songs by The Band and Queen.

Thoughts from this week's episode:

-Irene Cara reminded me of the old David Spade Hollywood Minute joke about how on the Laura Brannigan comeback tour, that "Gloria" needed to be be the opener, the middle, the closer and the 2nd encore [pp]. Because she did "Flashdance not once but twice. Besides, "Fame" would have been more appropos at the end.

-I don't even know where to begin with Cameo's outfit: Fringe by Rick James of Detroit, Pants/codpiece by Prince of Minnesota, hat by Jughead of Riverdale.

-Howard Jones looked like Gunther from "Friends" and I can't be 100% sure that he wasn't. As much as I'm bleh about Coldplay, THAT'S what he should have done as his cover. And really, he should have won...but considering that he was able to parlay his "Life In One Day" money into some well-paying investments and was able to retire early, I'd say he already has.

-SBH has always seemed a little space-rangery, and boy howdy was that on display.

-Wang Chung lost me in the first 15 seconds with their cheap-pop-thumbs-up routine. And I really really wanted to like them and say that they did well, but I just can't. Because they didn't.

This show is totally useless and trainwrecky crap and I love that about it.

What? Greg Kihn is on next week! Get out of town! He'll be doing "The Breakup Song." I'm guessing he hasn't aged well.

And the Baha Men? Wasn't "Who Let the Dogs Out?" just a couple years ago?

Hey now, the late, great Rick James was representin' the 716, being as he is truly Buffalo, NY's favorite native son.
I hate to nitpick, but so few good things came from my birth city, I couldn't let that one pass without comment.

Check this out: http://nbc.com/nbc/Hit_Me_Baby/
They have "Coming Soon"~!!!!! Those guys ROCKED!!!!!!

As for baha men, yes they are only a few years old, so maybe they'll cover "Hot Cherie" by Hardline. ;-)

As for Glass Tiger, can we hope for a surprise visit from Bryan Adams????

_edit- I just put in my vote for who I wanted to win this week (Cameo), and the results came up that the public at large thought Howard jones should have won,(32% of the vote right now), with Wang Chung in second place (27%), then Cameo and Sophie B tied for third (14%) and Irene Cara dead last at 13%. Amazing. Is Vince booking this show?

My bad...my Dad and one of my best friends, who are both Bisons by Alma Matter would both not approve of this. :)
