Well, as one of the resident grumps on the board who has been complaining a lot about things, I have to say this Smackdown was quite a decent little show. I dug most of what I saw, including:

-Rock/Hogan: I dug the promo something fierce. The crescendoing "whatcha gonna do" thing was kinda cool, though the one-handed t-shirt tear attempt was a bit poor.

-Jericho/HHH: The last interview was the kind of thing they needed throughout the whole feud. Better late than never I guess.

-Austin/Hall: Again, a decent buildup, establishing the 2 on 1 odds Austin faces at WM.

-Lita/Trish: I really liked that segment, because they did a damn good job of seeming pissed off at each other and quite intense.

Nothing about the show really got to me in a bad way, though I admit there were some flipping moments in the second hour, but there were too damn many things on I wanted to watch (NCAA, Corrs live on VH-1, Simon & Garfunkel at Central Park on PBS) So I give a thumbs up to SD, here's hoping it's the start of a good run.

You know, this show wasn't bad. The dumbass dog angle was kept to the front of the show (where I could skip it) and the rest was pretty inoffensive.

My question, however, is this. . .if they can DO shows like this, full of the kind of intensity between PPV opponents with decent matches (I think there might be some milage in an RVD/Angle series) at the last minute. . .why in the hell don't they do them more often?

Stuff I liked:

-RVD/Angle. RVD did a little too much flippty-flopping, and there was a serious clash of styles at the beginning, but it got its sea legs and kinda echoed the RVD/Taz matches from ECW. RVD even sold the German the same way.

-Rock/Hogan. As much as I like the lunatic promo style Hogan occasionally falls into ("That's the WALL up there, brother!") he acquitted himself pretty well, blaming the fans for the downfall of Hulkamania. What does one put on a Hulka-sammich, anyway? I'm thinking lots of pickels. And gouda. Hogan gets bonus points for always looking like a crestfallen walrus every time Rock showed him up.

-It may be my creeping insanity, but David Flair with dark hair looks eerily like Mike Nelson from MST3K.

-Nash getting fooled. Him chasing after the ref with the chair made me laugh, as did Hall's "oooo, you scwewwy Austin!" face right before he got a Stunner (presumably with stink upon it)

-HHH/Jericho. Right up until Steffie Megatits started flapping her lips, this was a decent promo, and the kind they shoulda been trading back and forth since No Way Out. It's amazing how much more interesting the match is when it becomes about the UNDISPUTED WORLD TITLE than about someone's fucking dog.

Yes, I liked this show. It pisses me off a little that they CAN do shows this decent all the time, they just refuse to for whatever reason. It didn't sell WMX8 to me, but it did salve some wounds from Monday's field trip with the retarded kids. There were things I didn't like, but let's dwell on the good for a change.

The Angle/RVD match was very nice. I even liked the 4way. Hate him (or more specifically his character) but Hogan is doing great with his schtick. His whole nostalgia for himself is great self deprication. He is basically putting over the image of him while in reality he knows what people are saying about him and turning it around on us. It's great. and the shirt tear waws really just an example of how the gimmick is working.

That little growl Hogan added after the t-shirt ripping was a bit over the top, I'd say ... Still, a very very good Smackdown IMO.

And it's true, Hogan's moustache-thingie DOES make him look like a sad sad walrus

Hogan used to grunt, growl, and snort at the end of his promos all the time. Over the top? Only out of context. Perfect for the character? You bet.

I like how some people *have* to get a dig in even when they compliment Hogan, as though if they don't qualify every statement they make boils will start forming on them.

I mean, really, you can't expect your opinion to matter one iota when you say you hate Hogan's character--then praise praise the job he's doing as that character.

    It does not make sense.

What are you talking about, Pheadfred? Maven is working the Crash Holly gimmick to the hilt, taking full advantage of the chaotic 24-7 of the Hardcore title. Somebody had too, it is the funniest gimmick (along with Angle's 'Dorkarooni') the WWF currently has.

    Maven's hardcore!!! Maven's hardcore!!!

    Other thoughts:

The Lita-Trish brawl looked better than some of the matches lately.

RVD-Angle the first match????!!! Following Booker T-Austin last week???? Man, the WWF may have too much depth on the roster. Or some guys may have to leave town early.

No matter how much they try, the sound crew cannot turn down the "You Suck!!" crowd chant when Angle's music plays.

HHH will pedigree Steph at WM-18.

I was hoping that David Flair bought some weapons with him when he fought Undertaker. Even with Rick's run-in, the segment was a little flat. They didn't even do a decent double team punking on UT.

I don't care much for boy-girl groups, or girly-boy groups, but I happen to like Billy and Chuck's theme song. The look on Farooq's face when it played was priceless. He was probably thinking, "THIS is the team that beat us???"

Which is a good news/bad news thing, all in the same sentence.

But I agree 100%, deadbeater. That brawl was old-school awesome! Now why couldn't they have used the same blueprint to give the tag 4-way some heat? Think about it: in the WEEKS leading up to WM, NONE of these teams has cut promos on each other or had any interaction backstage. I mean, how long ago was that stupid gay-bar brawl (an angle that was then buried) between APA and Flame-On?

One last question: Has anyone noticed there's something really weird about Hogan's stomach? It's totally flat and stretched at an unnatural 45-degree angle from navel to breastbone. Plus there's no jiggly fat, yet no muscle definition either. Freakiest thing I've ever seen. It's like when I re-plastered my ceiling: everywhere was wavy and cracked except the area I worked on, which was nice and smooth. Should be a segment on an upcoming "How'd They Do That?"

I've got no problem with the 24 - 7 rule , just the push that Maven is getting . I'm from the school of thought that he hasn't paid enough dues for " Show " and " Taker " to be doing the job to him . I'm not saying that Maven doesn't have potential , I just think it's to soon for him to be getting that kind of push . Just my opinion .

Logic tell me that maybe Maven's WWF exposure has more than a little to do with the fact that it's time for another season of Tough Enough? Cross-promotion and all that?

Every time Maven appears, it gives the announcers a chance to plug TE2 like, ten times in two minutes.

Maven looked just as good as, if not better than, David Flair. I don't see a bunch of people complaining about Flair jr. getting a couple of programs with Taker.

David "put in his dues" by being someone's son - and that's ok - but Maven working hard and putting on entertaining matches isn't good enough?

Guru Jim is absolutely right. I would also like to add that Maven ia better wrestler and sports-entertainer than Paul Wight will ever be. It's terrible performers like him that keep wrestling off television.

I haven't seen " Taker " do the job to Flair Jr. yet . The only thing I seen was two squashes .

David Flair sucks , I agree ! He's got a long way to go before he should appear on WWF TV again , and yeah , Maven definitely puts on a better match .
