Yes, the team that epitomizes 100 plus loss seasons and apathy is on the verge of not only escaping the American League East Cellar, but of getting into 3rd Place in the AL East. Ever since Pinella called out his team and threatened to get rid of all of them, they have played 8-9 games over .500. Considering Toronto has not played any games against the Yankees yet, and probably will have sold off the team before they play each other after the All-Star Break, Tampa could realistically not finish in last place this season. Couple that with Sidney 'If any of you can do better than a 6.60 ERA, come out of the stands and try' Ponson taking the ball every 5th day for the Orioles, the D'Rays could be in a race for 3rd place, impressive for a team that has never escaped the cellar.

Don't even get me started about Ponson. He bitched and moan after Sunday's game that he wan't getting enough run support. I'd like to mention that this was his line:

6.2 IP, 13 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 3 K

The sad part about all of this is the fact that with the problems the Yankees and Red Sox potentially could have, the division is still up for grabs.

God Bless Ronald Reagan, and may he rest in peace...

* * * * * * *

For decades, American had waged a Cold War, and few believed it could possibly end in our own lifetimes. The president was one of those few. And it was the vision and the will of Ronald Reagan that gave hope to the oppressed, shamed the oppressors and ended an evil empire . . . Ronald Reagan was more than a historic figure. He was a providential man who came along just when our nation and the world most needed him.

Fellow Americans, here lies a graceful and a gallant man.
- Dick Cheney, 6/9/2004

Reagan had a rare and prized gift called leadership, that ineffable and sometimes magical quality that sets some men and women apart so that millions will follow them as they conjure up grand visions and invite their countrymen to dream big and exciting dreams.-Brian Mulroney, 6/11/2004

I think its a stretch, to put it WAY too lightly (even with White and Heredia in the pen, Sturtze starting a game, Brown and Moose not being 100%, Lieber increasing beer sales at The Stadium, Contreras being what Contreras is), to say that the division is up for grabs. Boston, getting Nomar and Nixon back, with their troika of Shilling, Pedro, and Lowe, and Foulke in the pen (et al), are going to be at or near the top with NY. There is no way that Tampa, Baltimore, or Toronto can make it more than a two-team race.

"I'm very sorry the government taxes their tips, that's fucked up. That ain't my fault. It would seem to me that waitresses are one of the many groups the government fucks in the ass on a regular basis. Look, if you ask me to sign something that says the government shouldn't do that, I'll sign it, put it to a vote, I'll vote for it, but what I won't do is play ball. And as for this non-college bullshit I got two words for that: learn to fuckin' type, 'cause if you're expecting me to help out with the rent you're in for a big fuckin' surprise."

I know where Grimis was going: If Baltimore had not folded like a cheap accordian the past few weeks, they could have had a shot with the Yankees rotation having injury problems, while the Red Sox have Schilling facing an MRI Thursday, Lowe being hideous until the past week, a blackhole in the 5 slot, Wakefield being in one of his down periods, and Martinez being inconsistent until recently. In 3 weeks, they have gone from being within a few games of the loss column in the division into a death struggle to hold off Tampa.
A question though: Peter Angelos is a half-way decent attorney, right? So, how has he not found a way to get Ponson deported (can't say someone with a 6.60 ERA has a special skill) in order to get out of the last 2 and a half years of his contract?

He's pissing me off. Not only has he claimed DC, WTOP 1500AM last week said he claims everything within 80 (or was it 60? My father was distracting me) miles as his domain. I THINK they quoted him as saying he wanted the Expos in Richmond instead of DC, but my dad was talking and I missed the quote they were citing.

Did Sidney Ponson spit on you at some game or deny your autograph request? Just curious...

No, I've just always considered Ponson a pitcher who has good stuff but no guts. He's been hideous against good teams in his career, and has pitched 4 good months in six and a half years. Considering its not fun to laugh at Chan Ho Park anymore, Ponson is my new personal posterchild for overrated/overpaid/gutless pitchers.

Hast thou forgotten Kenny Rodgers? This guy has made a CAREER out of decent regular season W/L percentages, and a perfect game. I STILL can't figure out how that perfect game happened....

They self same Kenny Rogers who has somehow gotten 9 wins this season. But he is better than Ponson, I was sort of upset that the Giants didn't keep him, but then... I got over it, fast.

The D'Rays have a great young team and have 3 more players in their system (Gathright, Upton and Young)...that gives them someone at almost every position for the next 10 years...and I still think Brazelton is gonna develop into an above average pitcher

Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Darren Dreifort.

My beloved Blue Jays are just being killed with injuries. If they could just for the love of GOD get everyone healthy and on the same page at the same time, they could be in third place by a landslide. Their starting lineup for a game I attended last week was...

Frank Menechino
Chris Gomez
Reed Johnson
Vernon Wells
Gregg Zaun
Chris Woodward
Josh Phelps
Dave Berg
Alexis Rios

If there was ever a need to ask for a refund, this was the game (not surprisingly, they lost 6-1 to Los Angeles). And now Vernon Wells is hurt....fuck!

Rios is arguably one of the best prospects in baseball..you have Chris Hill and like 3 other guys in the minors who are great

Can you tell me what the hell happened to Josh Phelps? Dear lord, he looks like he couldn't hit a beach ball this year

Be patient, Riccardi is one of the best young minds in baseball :)

Saw part of last night's BlueJays game (6/17) and saw that Howie Clark played 1B and batted lead-off. Having your first baseman hit leadoff is pretty rare. Has Darin Erstad done it since his switch to first?

Howie Clark is a mystery. Every time he gets called up, he hits around .400, and yet never gets a chance to play regularly.

A stocked minor league and a dollar will buy you a Coke. I don't believe in all the hype over prospects until they actually prove something in the majors (case in point: Josh Phelps), and thus far, Rios has shown that he's the worst outfielder in MLB history. It seems like he averages about one misjudgement on a fly ball per game.

I'm not giving up on my Blue Jays, since I KNOW they're better than those clowns from Tampa and Baltimore. It just disappoints me that they couldn't take that next step after winning 86 games last year.

Brad Wilkerson has done it while playing for the Expos this year, Adam Dunn has done it for the Reds within the last couple of seasons (not sure if he was playing the OF or 1B at the time though), Doug Mientkiewicz did it for at a game this year, Mark Grace pulled leadoff duty a couple of times for the Cubs, and Nick Johnson may have done it for the Yankees last year. I don't think Erstad has done it his year, Eckstein, Kennedy, Figgins, and probably DaVanon have hit leadoff more often than not for the Halos. Erstad, when healthy, usually hits out of the two hole.
