The NCAA football Twitterverse just sent out the news that the two-team BCS championship game will be no more starting in 2014.

They are supposed to narrow down the formats to THE format this week.

Personally, I wish it was an 8-team playoff to start, and I hope that they only take conference champions (but they won't). I'll take this for now, though.

The thing is, if anyone looks at the BCS standings before the bowl season, by this logic, the undefeated Houston and Boise State would still wind up on the outside looking in. So the complaints are still going to be out there.

But at the very least, this is a good start.

Every year prior to this there's been tons of whining about someone getting left out and they ignore it. This year it was less than usual and they do a 180 and finally do a playoff? Makes no sense to me why they changed gears so quickly.

And frankly, it sucks. Four teams to start, which will expand and expand and expand.

I hate this.

I love it. Even the lower College Division football has playoffs. Its been a giant embarrassment for decades. There was also a ton of screaming of having two SEC teams who already played before with the one team winning away and then they go on to lose in the rematch which is not at home. LSU would have had a better case if they actually had a QB and learned Big Boy football means pointing at least one lousy point on the board. No, this is better for all involved to have four teams unless they load it with more SEC teams and make it unwatchable like did this year.

The Wee Baby Sheamus.Twitter: @realjoecarfley its a bit more toned down there. A bit.

I think there was "the usual", but then Alabama beat LSU and so the general feeling was they proved to pick the two right teams. There was a lot of OKSt/Bama discussion that was easily forgotten after the game was played.

They changed gears because the TV contracts are up after 2014, so it was money-driven, not "my team was left out what a grave injustice"-driven. I think they knew the networks are both (a) willing to pay them truckloads of cash and (b) kind of sick of the old way of doing things.

Wade, if they stick with four teams and make it "conference champs only" does that work for you? At least it would serve to protect their whole "the regular season is SO important"-deal. The only downside (and it is a considerable one) is there is no incentive to schedule awesome interconference games, unless you are in the 4th or 5th-best power conference and you are trying to bulk up the schedule to get that fourth spot.

I would think you would like giving into the playoffs better than all this silly rivalry-killing conference-to-conference jumping.

I just meant it seemed like the playoff push we've read in the press non-stop seemed to lighten up this past season. i didn't notice it as much, hoped they got tired and gave up.

Forgot about the contracts coming up, that at least gives a reason, though not really for why all these people who were dead set against a playoff now seem determined to do one. I've read too many quotes over the years from these people to not be shocked by this turnaround. Just disappointed I suppose.

I don't think doing it by conference champs is fair, though admittedly there isn't really a "fair" way to pick four teams, which is why I say don't bother changing. In the end, it won't stick to four teams, of that I'm certain. Almost as much as I was we wouldn't get any playoff, so that's how much my opinion is worth. I haven't liked losing some big rivalries, but at the same time I figured it would all shake out eventually. Wasn't going to bother me all that much if they went to a few superconferences.

It'll likely be a Boise or someone like that finishing fifth that'll make them rethink it and bump it to eight. I'd give it four or five years before that happens. From there, maybe another eight to ten years and there will be talk of moving to 12 or 16. It's happened in every other sport, why would this be an exception?

I was glad to read a quote today that said they were worried about teams just trying to go undefeated by scheduling no one. Not sure how they'll deal with that, but I sure hope they do. If they're going to do this thing I think they have to form a selection committee and ignore all the polls. A group that will put heavy emphasis on strength of schedule, quality wins/losses. it'll be hard because the AP will still produce a poll no matter what and I'm sure people will balk if they don't just pick the top four from that.

But again, this isn't really about ending controversy, no matter if they try to potray it that way. I just hope they keep as many bowls around as they can. I enjoy them all.

Welcome home, men of the 2nd Bn, 127th Infantry, 32d "Red Arrow" Brigade, WI Army National Guard! Job well done in Iraq!

Word today is that all they decided to do was also take 8-team and 16-team scenarios off the table, while taking several possible formulas w/ a smaller number of teams...and bringing 'em back to the various conferences for discussion before meeting again in June.

Seattle's been consistently underrated every year, compared to a Buffalo team that's usually touted as a sleeper, but doesn't wake up until late in the season. The Seahawks don't choke until playoff time, anyway.
