If'n you're looking to expand your funky side, you need to check out Zapp, the JBs, and Sly & the Family Stone.

Familiarity with Parliament's Chocolate City and Up for the Down Stroke, JBs Pass the Peas and Givin' up Food for Funk, and Zapp's Computer Love should be required membership in the human race.

As for rap, I can't add any big names that's aren't already on the list except perhaps Roots Manuva. If you're willing to dig a little, find yourself some Buck65, some Swollen Members, and some Sage Francis.

edit: Oh yeah, you can check out the guys from Anticon, too (but I'm sure someone will jump on me hard for bringing them up... )

Yes, do yourself a favor and check out my man Buck 65. His entire catalog was re-released on Warner Music (at least here in Canada) today.

Any Outkast fans out there heard of a new CD coming out anytime soon? It's been 2 years since Stankonia, then they put out Greatest Hits for last Christmas season, so by my caculator, it's about time for some new beats. Anybody have info on this?

I believe they are recording one right now. No release date, though. And I guess you don't count "Land of a Million Drums", off the Scooby-Doo soundtrack. It's okay... really could've been better with more hyperactive beats.

Not a huge rap fan, but I still have "O.G. - Original Gangster" by Ice-T, which has the theme from New Jack City on it. Good stuff. I don't know if anyone would really qualify 3rd Bass as rap, but The Cactus Album (has Gas Face) is pretty decent. Old stuff, check out Boogie Down Productions...

I thoroughly recommend Black Star featuring Mos Def and Talib Kweli. Of course this could just be the fact that Mos Def has a special place of love in my heart for being the host on the best show on tv, Def Poetry Jam. If you dig spoken word stuff, definitely check that show out too, as they often get rappers on the show doing their writings.

The N.E.R.D. one is pretty good.

Dilated Peoples is alright. Same with Jurassic 5.

Shame most of them don't get played on Rap City. Instead they play lots of Cash Money videos.

For old school, check out:

Run-DMC, early LL, definitely get Eric B and Rakim (he is the best MC of all time), Big Daddy Kane, any Public Enemy before 'Greatest Misses', early NWA, Ice Cube solo, Ice-T, Paris (especially 'Sleeping With the Enemy'), EPMD

Now that is a good list! I would only venture forth a little KRS One and Boogie Down Productions (the live one), and some GangStarr. That would be a hell of a good set.

Yep definitely pick up the new J5 cd(its tight) and the old one while you're at it. I don't think anyone mentioned Bone thugs and Harmony. They're second cd "crossroads", Snoop and Dre doin "nuthin but a g-thing", Notorius BIG's "One more chance", and Wu-Tang's 36 chambers are what got me hooked on rap.

Hmmm...

Special Ed -- Youngest in Charge, Legal

Any OutKast Album -- actually--get 'em all

Tribe Called Quest -- up to Midnight Marauders

Eric B. and Rakim -- Paid in Full

Redman -- Whut? Thee Album

Raekwon the Chef--Only Built for Cuban Links (for my money, this is the best Wu-Tang solo effort)

Ice Cube -- up to Death Certificate

NaS -- Illmatic

De La Soul -- up to Stakes is High

early GangStarr, Mobb Deep, Biggie and Jay-Z

Oh, and try the first Big Punisher album--Capital Punishment

Ok, so I'm a big fan of Sony's Frequency for PS2... and there's a killer song on there. It's Funkstar De Luxe's "Ignition." I've searched far and near for it, yet I can't find it. Any help? Thanks in advance!
