While it had the slight advantage over the 600 by actually being run today, the Indy 500 didn't seem that much more interesting. There were a couple periods right after yellow flags where there was passing action, and maybe at the end of green flag runs, but we really didn't get enough of them to tell. Seemed like the great majority of passing was on pit row, not really what I'm looking for in a race.

Still, Helio's story here was so good, it was pretty good anyway. And his car was clearly the best - Danica did well to finish third, but I don't think she drove particularly any better. Except she did stay out of trouble (outside of that one missed pit box), and that's a skill. (Callback!)

Car On Fire was pretty cool. Certain usual suspects surprisingly finished the race (or at least were running at the end.) Fisher - who was good on tDS, if a bit random - kept in one piece and finished decently, so yay for that.

OTOH, Kanaan has enough trouble at Indy without the W jinx up there to nudge him. - luchablog

Man, this race was borrrrrrrrrrrrrrrring.

We DID get ONE translates-to-"Milka doesn't belong here" interview, which I always enjoy every year.

After the well-done Versus pieces, I was kinda hoping today's storyline was going to be more along the lines of a Paul Tracy redemption (The W) but Helio winning is just fine.

Sure seemed like Danica was spending a lot of time setting up the chance to complain later, though - Briscoe, Wheldon, and of course a super classy Paul Tracy reference in her post-race interview. (On the other hand, ABC did her no favours by playing the radio of her getting hysterical over TK.)

Speaking of ABC, a couple of times when there appeared to be action, it always seemed like they'd cut away from what I wanted to see to show me an in-car camera shot of....nothing. I'm kinda used to that from ESPN2's Nationwide races, though, and I'm sure it's the same dumbass director taking those shots.

Anyway, I can't help but think that the 600 will also be a snoozer, so maybe it's just as well that it's tomorrow, when I'll have had a chance to rest up before attempting to watch the whole thing without a nap.

Confession: I flipped back and forth between this and the Reds/Indians game so I didn't see the *whole* thing so any observations I have are of the usual half-cocked uninformed variety.

What I saw, I enjoyed. I was rooting for Paul Tracy (the old man) and Oriol Servia (because of the Letterman ownership).

Car on fire was indeed wild. Amazing he could still race and then seemingly waste that second chance when he wrecked later (I think it was the same car that crashed about 30 laps later anyways).

The guy that skidded down the wall sideways was *very* lucky his car didn't flip over on top of his head.

Was pleasantly surprised that coverage of Danica didn't overwhelm what I saw of the telecast. I tuned in about 10 mins late (so I didn't see the pre-race coverage) and didn't hear them mention her until about 1:30est. Once they did mention her they did refer to her frequently from then on, but with good reason since she was improving the whole time and contending so it made sense. Can't say the same about the commercials though (too much GoDaddy . . . )

Have to admit I'm not all that up on what Castroneves was in trouble for, but can't get too behind someone who was in danger of being sent away for a long time very recently without knowing more of the story. Hard to believe whatever it was could have been a total misunderstanding and he's completely innocent of what he was charged with, but I don't know a lot of people in danger of being put away in jail for significant amounts of time and I haven't walked a mile in his shoes, yadda yadda yadda . . .

Was curious about some of the empty seats I saw in the stands (looked like it was close to the pits). Was it sold out?? Being a fan of that *other* May event the national sports media oftentimes complain about still having to cover, I'd hate to think that it didn't sell out, somewhat justifying their opinions.

You are going to get a certain amount of snarkiness on the Internet no matter what, and my rule is that you don't post anything that you wouldn't say to someone's face.

My one game of ultimate frisbee resulted in my being sore for a week and winded like the Ultimate Warrior three minutes into a match. It's a tough, tough, sport.
