Lol at "Heavy Metal" in the thread name, I did a triple take to make sure I didn't read that wrong...

Anyway, has anyone here played Heavy Rain yet? I just beat it and I'm dying to talk about it and compare experiences with other people. I've discovered from the one other person I know who's played through it that it's VERY different, especially in the last third of the game, depending on the decisions you make earlier. I got the "good" ending, which was a little too cheesy/perfect for me, but at least I got the trophy for keeping everyone alive up to the end. It looks like this game'll be tough to Platinum, as it would require replaying a bunch of times to get all the variables in place.

Oh, and today looks to be a HUGE day for the PSN. New DLC is supposed to release for Uncharted 2, Little Big Planet, and Valkyria Chronicles. Plus, most importantly: GRANDIA as a PSone Classic!!! Can't wait to play through that one again. I still think it's one of the best RPGs of all time.

God, I love my PS3 lately.

I played the demo and apart from when it crashed on me, I thought it was neat. The demo doesn't really show how your actions affect the future, though - did you play through it more than once to see what happens?

I kind of want to buy it, but I have a million games I haven't played yet so I am making myself play through those first. Maybe by the time I'm finally done with those, I can trade them off and Heavy Rain won't be full price anymore.

I'm on my second playthrough now, after a brief stint trying to play Uncharted 2's online multiplayer. The lag in that is unforgiveable, and destroys it. Apparently it's not just a problem I'm having either, there are tons of forums dedicated to people talking about their issues with it. It's a shame.

But yeah, I'm trying to play through again with different decisions and so far, it doesn't seem to be affecting too much. But if my friend's experience is to be believed, he made one small change earlier in the game and his whole ending changed to one that sounded immensely cooler than mine. I don't wanna spoil anything since you haven't played the full game yet, but it went from a happily-ever-after ending to one that blew my mind when I heard about it. All because he decided to see what happened when he didn't find a piece of evidence at a crime scene with Jayden. So I guess the small stuff I'm changing now will eventually create a butterfly effect by the time I'm done.

It's definitely worth a buy if you have an open mind. It starts off slowly but boy oh boy does it pick up about two hours in. I couldn't stop playing because it sucked me in so much. And one decision I made early in the game was a major "holy shit" moment, and actually made me stop and think about what I'd done and how it affected things. I don't think any game has ever made me feel so emotionally linked to what my characters do.

In the PS3 possibly blowing up thread, Mr. KJames talked about buying Heavy Rain. I am interested in hearing about the game if anyone else buys it. I thought it looked very interesting, and as was mentioned in this thread, it is getting good reviews.

Because of the reviews and the look of the game, I downloaded the demo not long ago. I must say I almost wish I hadn't downloaded it. I had to hit and hold buttons in a long sequence just to climb a hill, and I got annoyed with it very fast. It was revolutionary to have button pushing sequences as an enhancement to a game like Resident Evil 4, but to force this upon gamers for an entire game is just silly.

So again, I hope people here that get the game can tell me that the story is worth putting up with the horrid controls.

It is. The only problem I had with it after a time was with walking, but it's a non-issue most of the time.

I LOVED the fight sequence in the Heavy Rain demo. Shaking the controller while I was getting choked, I can't remember the last time I had that much fun in a game so quickly.

My demo crashed too as I was exiting the crime scene. I can't imagine there was too much more after that point, though.

I was talking with a coworker about this game. When I get bored of Dragon Age, I will definitely be picking it up.

You believe me, don't you?

I will admit that the fight sequence was kinda fun, but as I said the second half of the demo was excruciating.

I think I will ultimately just rent Heavy Rain when I can and save myself the frustration. And with God of War III on the horizon, renting Heavy Rain will save some strain on the wallet.

Finished Heavy Rain tonight and I thought it was pretty good. I worry that it doesn't quite live up to some people's hype of it though. It's not an interactive Oscar worthy movie that'll make you cry, but it is a interactive average cop show that'll make you depressed, which is still a high mark for video game stories. It borrows a lot of kind of standard cop character cliches, and some plot devices from things like Saw, but it does them pretty well. There are many things in the game which are awesome 90% of the time but when they do go wrong that ten percent, it makes them all them all the more noticeable. A bad line of dialog here, a slip of an accent there, a weird looking face.

That sounds like I didn't like the game, but I actually did quite a bit. When I was a kid and saw stuff like The Adventures of Willy Beamish on the Sega CD, it blew mind. I thought interactive movies were the future of games and we'd all be pressing keypads at the movie theater to choose the ending to the film. This is really as close as they've ever come in terms of doing it. I was also surprised at how fun the quick time events were and how much tension they created, as well as how much I liked the kind of mundane events that had little to do with the story. Maybe that's because it's the kind of stuff you usually don't see in games, like picking my kid's dinner, washing my face or making a good plate of eggs. I could play one of these every year.

Anyway, if the interactive movie thing interests you, or you liked the demo, or you don't shout "I WANT TO PLAY MY GAMES, NOT WATCH THEM" during a Metal Gear Solid, it's worth a rental. There's really not much on the market like it. Kind of hard to justify a purchase though, you can beat the thing in three or four good lengthy sittings, and while there's the promise of over ten different endings, I think if you replayed the game the seams would start to show in terms of, "Oh, because I picked B instead of A they changed three lines and now I don't get to see this scene".

PS: There's some bug happening to a bunch of people where the PS3 freezes up when you try to load a saved Heavy Rain game, so you might want to wait some weeks for a patch if you're planning on renting it. I once had to load up the game a few chapters previous from where I'd left it, replay them all and then beat the level my game was crashing trying to load from the save, just so I could create a new save that wouldn't crash the PS3. Not so fun spending 45 minutes of my life trying to figure that out.

Well, I'm a dumbass. The crashing demo should have been a clue, but I bought the game anyway, and it just keeps crashing and glitching out. It's hitting the trade pile.
