Hatton stops Tszyu in 11 (secondsout.com)
Originally posted by Ant Evans, secondsout.com
In front of 22,000 thunderously vocal fans at his fortress like MEN Arena, fast starter Hatton shook off the affects of at least two dozen Tszyu right hands and left hooks which would have finished off a majority of top 10 140lbs contenders to emerge in the second half of a excellent battle as the stronger, more fiercely determined fighter and eventually panel-beat a terrific upset victory.

Well, Team Hatton told us so and it is time for those of us who questioned whether there was any pugilistic merit in some of Hatton's recent assignments and believed them to be cynical money-spinning sparring sessions to hold our hands up and admit we were proved wrong in the end.

Count me among those who believed that Hatton was more hype than talent. Prior to the opening bell I was certain that Hatton would be completely out-classed by Tszyu. Well, having added to the net worth of a certain internet bookmaker, I admit that I had mis-judged Hatton and I take my hat off to the new champ. Hatton took the fight to Tszyu right from the opening bell and never let up for a second of the fight, thus not allowing the thirty-five year old Tszyu to take a breather throughout the eleven round bout. Hatton did a great job of fighting (some may say brawling) in close, not allowing Tszyu the distance he needed to put maximum power behind his trademark right cross. Perhaps a different referee may have changed the face of the fight (by not allowing all the in-fighting and rough-housing) but not the outcome, as Hatton's determination IMHO would have won out regardless. So congrats to the new champ.

I knew there would be problems for Tszyu when he was not accompanied to the ring by Russian pop star (and Crack-Ho lookalike) Larisa Dolina singing his personal anthem "Somthing Worth Fighting For."

Hatton has a hell of a beard (who knew?), and a hell of a lot of energy. That´s what won the fight. Tszyu landed some unholy shots in the middle rounds that didn´t put down Hatton. Once it was established that Hatton could take Tszyu´s best shot it was pretty academic. Tszyu may have the hardest training regimen in boxing, but Hatton must have a motor on his ass.

And, despite some Andrew Golata-like antics (Hatton definitely should have been penalized for that deliberate low blow - which was also stupid to do as it gave Tszyu a nice rest), we only get class from both fighters afterward. Well done. I was really surprised Tszyu didn´t come out for the 12th, but I think everyone (him included) knew he was behind on points and didn´t have close to enough left to put down Hatton.

I´d be really surprised in Tszyu didn´t announce his retirement today.

They mentioned that Tszyu did not change his schedule to accomadate training for the weird 2am start time. I think Tszyu's hubris caught up with him...

I complained to another Liberal friend about some of the Left’s tone concerning the 2004 elections. I thought it insulting to hear those “red state” voters caricatured as red-necked rubes. My friend asked, “Well, don’t you think that people who live in large urban areas, who travel and read and speak other languages are better able to make informed choices?” It turns out it is superiority, not familiarity, which breeds contempt. - Pat Sajak

I wouldn´t call it hubris - Tszyu´s doctors and trainers told him it was better to keep his regular training schedule. Hatton´s people told him otherwise. I personally don´t think it made that much of a difference either way.

I though Tszyu sounded sick before the fight.
Not, he's about to puke any minute sick, but more he's just recovered from a cold or something like that.

If "the system is this broken" what's the point of having any fight ever again?! Bad decisions happen. When they happen in big fights and go against a popular fighter you get lots of wailing and gnashing of teeth, but it never lasts.
