If this happens, who's supposed to be the backup, Hasek or Cujo? If it's the latter, I'd be pissed if I were him.

There's no way they would bring Hasek back as the second stringer - he'd get paid more, he has the ring, enough said.

The Wings would try to trade Cujo - he only has two seasons left on the contract, so he would be of no value to the Wings until he becomes a free agent again, if the strike/lockout that everyone is counting on occurs.

Talk about sweet justice for those in Toronto that CuJo slapped in the face.

But on the other hand, imagine that goaltending tandem? WOW!

One thinks that the Avs will be making a move, but I doubt that Detroit would trade either goalie to their arch-rivals.

Hmmm. They would have $17 million tied up in goalies if they kept 'em both, so they've got to send Hasek out of there, right? I'd love to see him go to the Eastern Conference. Philly, perhaps? The Rangers would seem the most likely and he'd surely make them a contender right away, moreso then Jagr would. There are enough good teams in the West right now.

Joseph has a no-trade clause in his contract so they cannot just shop him around.
But apparently he wouldn't mind the Rangers (he expected/wanted to go there last year said ESPN)

No matter what happens, I would be pissed if I were Cujo ;)

Well CuJo did say in his Red Wings signing press conference. What are his goals and he said "Stanley Cup or Bust". Losing in the first round sure seems like a bust to me.

Just kidding(somewhat), he's still a good goalie and certainly a team like the Rangers or Flyers would welcome him with open arms. Even though the Rangers seems to have a hot shot young goalie who was given an opportunity last year.

Cujo is also a $12m a year goalie and any team that does convince him to waive his no-trade is going to want the Wings to pick up a sizable chunk of that salary

If the NHL weren't going into what may be their last season for a while, the NYR might have been interested in dealing for Cujo but I don't see them as an option at this point. The Avs could use him but the Wings wouldn't even give the Avs a case of the Clap right now they hate each other so much.....

Given the NHL economy right now, trading Joseph might be tougher than it seems. This might be the year where the Rangers might just throw all caution to the wind, buy up everyone and take one Marlins-in-1997 shot at winning the Cup.

I heard this morning that Slats talked to agents for Federov and Kariya yesterday. He also denied the report that the NYR were going to exercise an option in Erica's contract and buy him out. I would gladly pay a few more shekels for my tix to see them kick his sorry butt to the curb.

and in additional goalie news, Hackett signs with the Flyboyz taking them out of Cujo consideration.

The Red Wings have called a press conference for today and are expected to announce that Dominik Hasek will be returning to the fold.

There's still a lot of speculation regarding what they'll do with Curtis Joseph. Clearly they can't keep him as a backup, so trading him will be the best option. However, CuJo's no trade clause and gigantic contract are serious barriers to a deal. The Avs are obviously in need of a goalie and have the cash, but given the rivalry between the teams a trade would be very surprising. The Rangers are always mentioned whenever a high-priced player becomes available, but I wonder whether they'll want to add so much to their payroll for a guy who has never done anything in the playoffs, especially given that they have two quality young netminders in Dunham and Blackburn.

The other option for the Wings would be to waive CuJo, just like they did with Osgood. Of course, if no one picks up Joseph, the Wings are stuck with him...

There have been some rumors flying around that the Bruins might be interested in CuJo. The possible trade is LaPointe for Joseph. It seems very doubtful that this'll go down. The B's are in need of a goaltender but O'Connell wouldn't be willing to take on CuJo's salary. He's more content with sticking Andrew Raycroft out there to get slaughtered.

Under no circumstances should a team be able to make 50-60 foot passes on a regular basis. The Canadian defensemen played a horrible game letting the Swedes get behind them on a consistant basis.
