Well, I went, and I had a blast. The ECW Arena is one of the coolest places to watch a wrestling show. Its just an awesome crowd.

Every wrestling site seems to have the results, so I wont bore you with that. Here are my observations:

I sat right next to Sabu's mom. She is a really cool old lady. Sabu personally walked her up to her seat at the Eagle's Nest. In fact, sitting up there was a great spot to met the wrestlers. Jerry Lynn was brushing his teeth before his match in this little bathroom up there too.

Terry Funk really is gonna kill himself one of these times. He got fucked up by a broken ladder and landed really bad on his legs as he fell. I am surprised he could walk.

The barbed wire gimmick is a no-no I guess nowadays in PA, because they almost didnt allow the match to happen.

Tammy Stych is such a mark for wrestling, which is cool to see. She sat up with us during the Raven/Sandman match and was totally into it. She was even singing along with Enter Sandman. Its just cool to see someone in the business who can act like a fan.

Mr Socko got booed like crazy. I guess its not "hardcore". Foley quickly solved that problem with a little wrapped up barbed wire. Thats an extreme Mr Socko.

Now, I took a few pics, but I have no zoom with this cam, so they kind of suck.

Here's the first pic I took, general shot of the ring:

Gertner in the fucking house!

To my right about 10 feet away is the announce crew of Styles/Cyrus

Oh New Jack, you so crazy!

Nice to see a barbed wire match live. Pretty intense I must say!

I miss the GWF.

http://www.hardcorehomecoming.com has all the info. They'll be putting out a documentary and a DVD.

It looks like Gertner's put back on the weight he lost. While I'm sorry for him, I just can't get my mind around the Quintessential Studmuffin being slim.

From what I understand, Tammy even did Candido's strut and everything during the tribute portion. (When people talked about the tribute though, I noticed Louie Spiccoli's name missing, tho.)

Okay, has Steve Corino pissed EVERYBODY off? He wasnt invited there, isnt to be seen in any ECW crap the WWE puts out. What's the deal?

Last I heard, and this could be outdated at this point, was that Gertner was in rough shape, as he was jobless and living on a buddy's couch. Here's hoping Gertner can pull in some good bank from this weekend as well as whatever future these show's may have.

Corino has stated in interviews that he didn't want to take part in either show as he has put ECW in the past.

I never got to see much ECW back in the day, but I have gotten to see Cactus Jack's legendary "Cane Dewey" promo where he turns against all things extreme. And I think this beautifully illustrates the point of that promo.

Mister Socko is 100% pure Mick Foley. It's not like Pat Patterson or Vince Russo or Brian Gerwertz thought it'd be funny if Mankind used a sock puppet to entertain Vince McMahon. It was just random weird stuff Mick dreamed up for the skit. WWE didn't turn it into a phenomenon--the fans did that with all their Socko signs the next week. I can see why ECW fans would boo if Mick came out in a Mankind mask, because Mankind was WWE's attempt to "improve" upon Cactus Jack. But Socko was one of the things that Foley used to salvage the gimmick. It's as much a part of him as anything he did in ECW.

And yet, the fans boo Mick for it as if it were a Dungeon of Doom shirt. It just goes right back to the heart of the Cane Dewey promo--ECW fans only care about Foley so long as he's bleeding for their amusement. Anything he does outside of that is anathema, apparently.

I don't want to sound like I'm overreacting. There's stuff I like about ECW and ECW fans too. But as a Mick Foley fan reading about other Mick Foley fans, this disappoints me.

What I read about the tribute was that the theme was "people who've died since we last saw ECW"--i.e., deaths from 2001-2005. I don't know why they'd limit it to that, but Spicoli's 1997 death wouldn't fit the criteria.

That's a great post, Jim. I thought I didn't agree with the booing of Socko when I was first reading the post but then your post really put it in perspective. If they were true Foley fans then they would've known and respected what Socko actually means to Foley. But I guess that's Philly fans for you, unfortunately.

Yeah, but I doubt the fans there live actually thought about it that hardly before reacting. If you're at a live show, you don't actually sit and think that Mr. Socko is something significant to Foley and we should treat it with respect. I mean their initial reaction when you see Mr. Socko is "WWF." Therefore, they booed.

I guess you've got a point, but when I see Socko I just think "Mick Foley," not what company he was working for when he used it. Life's too short to compartmentalize which of a wrestler's gimmicks I'm gonna cheer and boo.

Apparently, she flashed some dude at the aftershow Q&A when he bid $800 on some old ECW banner that had laying around. I guess he never knew about wrestlingvixxens.com

I once heard that Gertner dropped out of Cornell one semester shy of graduation to go to work full time for a still-very-regional ECW.

I didn't see the show, obviously, but I think Foley must have expected the crowd to boo Socko. Foley knows full well what Socko represents and what various groups think of him. He's made plenty of statements to that effect in the past -- notably in "Beyond the Mat" when he sees video of his wife and kids crying as the Rock hits him in the head 500 times with a chair and considers whether he just wants to be the guy who comes out and pulls out Mr. Socko. You can't spell it out any more clearly than that -- Socko-toting Mick Foley is the antithesis of Cactus Jack. He's more than smart enough to know what ECW fans think of that.
