I was disappointed by this one.

The concept of "Superman Is A Jerk (and also black and not really Superman at all)" had me sold on this one, and there are some funny moments of Hancock pwning ugly little kids, elderly, criminals and prison inmates but that's about where it stops. With a way-too-hot-for-him wife, Michael Bluth as the honest-to-goodness voice of reason in a "dramedy" didn't quite cut it. Although I'm sure Jason Bateman must've enjoyed working with the always delicious Ms. Theron on AD and I can't quite blame him there.

The movie does a good job of showing one man's journey towards being a more likeable person, but I can't say I cared very much for the big twist about halfway through. There was a nice redemption story jammed somewhere in the end there, but I can't go any further than a 2.5/5 for this flick.

I haven't seen the movie but it's been remarked on how hard it was to get this movie to PG-13. So this might a movie that comes across a lot better in the unrated DVD version.

I've been reading a lot of reviews, and they all seems to be falling short of letting me know of how much effort I should put into seeing this before the "big twist" is spoiled.

People seem to be split on if the "big twist" is lame or not, and everyone seems to agree that the ending blows.

Is this going to be important to see just to be able to talk about?
Should I just read spoilers?
Will no one be talking about this movie in 3 weeks?
Will I want those 90 minutes of my life back if I do go to see it?

I think people will stop talking about this as soon as Batman comes out.

What the hell happened here? This should have been an easy home run, but instead it turns into the most disappointing kind of frustration: the over-hyped, overrated blockbuster that'll still gross $100M in spite of how crappy it really is. I was so sure this would be awesome, but it was a huge letdown.

It's also frustrating because it has Will Smith in it. I know that popularity doesn't necessarily equal quality but I think one of the reasons Will Smith is pretty much the only bankable actor left is because he actually is good. But it seems like his return to action movies in his last two roles have pretty much been a waste. I wasn't a huge fan of the Pursuit of Happyness or Ali but if this keeps up he should go back to drama or his comedy roots.

I still think a big screen version of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is the way to go.

I think going in knowing two things about the movie made it better. I think they're both spoilers (one for the "unrated" DVD version most likely coming later, the other the big "twist" halfway through)

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
1. The original reason that the police and Nancy Grace were outraged at Hancock was an accidental statutory rape (think Animal House). It makes much more sense than "More property damage? This time it's too much!"

2. Mary (Charlize Theron) is like Hancock and, in fact, his wife. It gave their early interactions a much greater sense of depth.

As far as the ending, apparently none of the reviewers have never been through a relationship where it's best to part ways?

I think the weirdest thing is that there's no easy way to set up a sequel.

edit: Forgot a word in the spoiler.

The biggest problem I have with the twist is the disingenuous way that they toyed with our perceptions. The first twenty minutes post-twist are all designed to make us think that Theron is a super-villain. Why does she fight him? Why are there tornadoes, snow, and lightning? The twenty minutes make the sudden change in the relationship to “I always loved you, but it’s best if we’re not together” difficult to swallow. So by being so cute, it makes the entire second of the movie hard to accept.

It is the policy of the documentary crew to remain true observers and not interfere with its subjects.

Thank you everyone. This sounds like a great movie to catch on DVD. It sounds like a movie I would like to see, but not put a lot of money or effort into seeing.

Yeah, like I said, it seems like the ubiquitous "unrated cut" DVD down the line will make a better, more cohesive story out of what is, right now, a passable movie. They had to submit it to the MPAA 5 times to get it a PG-13 rating, and were doing reshoots as late as three weeks ago.

I will admit I was really confused about the tornadoes and such myself, but it didn't bother me enough to make it horrible in my eyes.

I liked the movie, but it did kind of fall short of its potential. It was such a sound concept, and Will Smith does a great job, but the script and the camera work were pretty mediocre. I'm also really curious to see what wound up getting cut, because the stretch in the middle where Hancock was in prison seemed really truncated to me. It would also have helped if they'd flushed out the character of the main bad guy, whose name I don't even remember. The film essentially had no main antagonist, which hurt it for the big punch-up at the end.

I also liked it, and as did most, found "the twist" lacking. Until then, the movie just plain ruled. Fully agree with Tenken, the main bad guy seemed to be a joke, when he was holding hands with those other guys. It went downhill, but the slope started really high, so I'd throw it 4 stars out of 5.

I loved Life Free or Die Hard - and I'm excited to see this. I think people tend to forget that movies like Die Hard aren't intellectual masterpieces. They'll never win Oscars like Amadeus.
