Actually heard this story on ESPN Radio a few minutes ago and it made me hunt for the link.

Seriously, this just sucks for the poor guy.

FOX Sports on MSN - Woman rejects ballpark marriage proposal

During Monday night's 7-0 loss to the Nationals at Minute Maid Park, a fan failed in his public attempt at asking his girlfriend to marry him, the Houston Chronicle reported on its Web site.

With the couple on display on the stadium's jumbotron, the male fan got down on one knee to present the ring. The woman, wearing a replica Astros jersey, appeared to dump a bag of popcorn on the man before hastily making her way up the stairs amid a chorus of boos, the newspaper reported.

The man left after the top of the sixth inning, cheered and consoled by an apparently sympathetic crowd.

Has anyone ever heard of one of these public marriage proposals actually going sour? This is the first time I've heard of such a thing. And while a marriage proposal isn't exactly a guarantee, you'd think the woman would at least humor the poor guy instead of doing what she did. She didn't just reject him, she HUMILIATED him in front of thousands.

Sucks to be him to say the least. Thoughts?

Here is a video of a guy getting rejected at a Wizards game a few years ago. Here is a story on NBA.com saying it was a spoof. It makes me question the authenticity of the Astros' stunt.

Usually when you pop the question, you likely want to make sure that she says yes. If you pop the question in front of 44k people, then it might be an idea to ensure that the answer is fairly certain at that point. Or something.

It could be a stunt, maybe not. Either way, that's one poor fella!

Sort-of related to this, I was at the Yankees/Tigers game at Yankee Stadium on Friday night, and there were THREE marriage proposals on the big screen (not video, just "Karen- will you marry me? Dave" or something like that). Is that normal for Yankee stadium, anyone who goes there often? I just thought it was odd that there were THREE in one night.

And no, I didn't find out how ANY of them turned out.

It's pretty much the standard. I remember being shocked one night when I went and *nobody* proposed on the jumbotron.

As I will be attending many, many Astros games in the near future, rest assured that I will not be proposing at Minute Maid Park.

I had a friend that was planning on doing this at a Cardinals game. When his girlfriend found out, she told him if he did it, she'd leave him. She said she thought it was an incredibly tacky idea. So, I can see this going badly if the guy didn't think it out all the way.
