Gay agrees to max deal with Grizzlies
Rudy Gay has agreed to a five-year, $81.6 million contract with the Memphis Grizzlies, his representatives at Octagon confirmed to Y! Sports.
The fifth and final year of the contract will be at Gay’s option.
This is the same team that dumped Pau Gasol for peanuts. Essentially, that just resulted in them paying a max salary to a guy who's NOT a max player.
And then they'll wonder why they can't afford to keep OJ Mayo.

With him, Marc Gasol, and Zach Randolph (provided he keeps putting up numbers like last year), that's a nucleus they can really build around. | CRZ

(Not that I ever had any clue what Kahn would have been prepared to give Gay to come to the T-wolves, because for some odd reason I found THAT scenario EXTREMELY unlikely)

Because it's the NBA, it's hard to say what "overpriced" is these days. I'm not really sure what the whole deal was behind the Gasol trade...it did happen over two years ago, so there could be something that happened between that time to change the Grizz tune about spending $$. Then again, I don't know how the Grizzlies would've magically found this kind of money to pay Gay that they couldn't pay Gasol in the last two years. But yeah, I'd probably rather have Pau, though getting Marc in the deal certainly makes it more palatable. | DJ FrostyFreeze

If you took the time to weed through all of the JERRY WEST/LAKERS CONSPIRACY THEORIES!!! when the Pau trade went down, people were saying that the team was actually in dire financial straits at the time and may not have even survived as an organization had they not gotten that salary off their books in time. Even Greg Popovich, who HATED the trade at the time and went as far as filing a formal complaint with David Stern over it, later acknowledged publicly that he now understood the cost-cutting motives behind Memphis "giving Pau away" when they did.
So for the Grizzlies to go from all THAT to giving Rudy Gay max money now is mind-boggling to me.
Nothing to see here, move along. |

The Grizz need to spend money on a couple of people who can come off the bench and help their starters out. These type of people are normally given less money, so who knows.
There are some good role-playing guys out there in the free agent market who could help the Grizz in the highly competitve Western Conference. | StingArmy

I don't think building a team around Rudy Gay is the worst thing you could do, but I agree that they perhaps could have gotten him for less money. I guess they're trying to show him some confidence. Also not the worst move you can make.
