There's Hal Jordan and Carol Ferris and Tom "Pieface" Kalmaku. There's Abin Sur, Sinestro, Kilowog, and the planet OA. Power Batteries, Power Rings, and a giant green boxing glove. There's Hector Hammond too. It's all there.

And yet... I dunno. Don't know what it is. But I'm not excited about it. Maybe if I see it on the IMAX in front of Harry Potter...

Pretty sure we'll get some Ganthet thrown in there too. But this needs 100% more Guy Gardner.

The trailer itself is....I don't know. Nothing BAD, but nothing was !!!!!!!! about it. Except Sinestro of course. Except Sinestro. If they land Sinestro right and throw down a setup for Gardner I'll be happy.

You're right though John, it'll probably translate better on the big screen.

SINESTRO.

I thought it was awesome. The oath at the end sent a chill up my spine.

I think it looks terrible. Ryan Reynolds is a great choice for Hal Jordan, but Green Lantern is not the type of property that translates well into a live action film. Green energy blasts and tiny domino masks are fantastic in a comic book, but they look very, very bad here.

It was totally awesome to hear "in brightest day, in blackest night" uttered in a real trailer for a real movie though.

I have to disagree on both counts. Green Lantern is the kind of property that would absolutely translate into a live action film. It's Star Wars without space ships where your lightsaber is on your finger and can make or do anything you imagine (boxing gloves are the least they should be able to imagine.)

Ryan Reynolds, though. Not a fan. I get why Ryan Reynolds was cast. He was the safest choice with the broadest mainstream appeal of the actors who wanted to do the movie. He has a lot of comedy and romantic comedy experience, so he's an easy sell to women, which is important when your movie is about flying men and aliens with green magic rings. But he has no gravitas. He's not manly. Giving the most powerful weapon in the universe to Van Wilder/the dude from The Proposal doesn't fill me with confidence or enthusiasm. But we'll see.

And Blake Lively, whoa. I know she said like two lines in the trailer but, hoo doggie. I ain't sayin' she doesn't look purty, but Katie Holmes in Batman Begins is starting to look like Meryl Streep.

But again, it was just a trailer. I don't really want to complain too much about a trailer. Though I suppose I just did. I hope the movie is much better than that trailer conveys.

I like the space adventure business, but I think the ring and costumes are the sorts of images that don't translate off the page. I haven't seen if a lantern battery is depicted in the film, but I'm guessing that will look bad too. Green Lantern has a classic superhero aesthetic about it where the cheesy stuff looks great in the books, but isn't fit for a big, glossy live action film.

Give Ivan Reis the $150 million budget and I'm sure he'd be more than happy to hand draw what would probably be the best-looking animated film ever for us instead.

I have to disagree with it doesn't fit. The costume translated well as did the fist scene. Almost everything in Avatar looked like it was drawn by an eight year old and it made a billion dollars. Nothing I have seen in so far in Green Lantern looks that silly, it actually looks what I thought it would look like if it was real. I am curious more about the story then anything else. We also had two really good Green Lantern animated features, New Frontier and First Flight, do we really need another one with the series coming out next fall?

Reynolds is so much better than "Van Wilder/dude from the The Proposal". Watch THE NINES. Watch BURIED. Watch ADVENTURELAND. The guy is the total package, and not in the 'roided-up half-crippled way.

And he's the Sexiest Man Alive as of today.

I guess my mental image of Hal Jordan is a hotshot test pilot with a lot of man's man swagger. Reynolds has a lot of boy-man swagger. The chicks seem to love that. And again, I get why he was cast. I get the realities of casting. He'll probably be very good. I have a lot of reservations about not just Reynolds but with the movie as a whole, but I hope it's good.

I like the scope of the film. Instead of keeping the scale small and saving big stuff for the sequel (like Fantastic Four), they've already brought in the other Lanterns and Oa.

I think Ryan has the right attitude for a young test pilot, and I like that he has a running buddy to share the ID with. DC needs a happy hero after Bale's Batman and Routh's restrained Superman.

Looks good to me, but I am not a big fan of GL either way. I feel the same about the Iron Man character, and I loved those movies, so hopefully this follows that trend.

I think the movie could go either way, but it wasn't a very good trailor. Needed more weight and less light moments. Not saying that Green Lantern should be super serious, but it should be sold like Superman. Fun light sci-fi, with a bit of majesty. Something like words followed by brief clips like:

"In Brightest Day..."

(Clip of Hal hot shotting in a jet)

"In blackest night"

(Clip of Abin Sur's ship crashing at night)

"No evil shall escape my sight"

(Clips of Hector Hammond doing evil shit)

"Let those who worship evil's might"

(Clip of Sinestro)

"Beware my power..."

(Abin Sur handing Hal the ring, Hal putting it on)

"GREEN LANTERN'S LIGHT"

(Flash of green light revealing GL in full costume)

Aside from the trailer's ending, which looked a little cliched, I loved this! I watched it after walking into the local comic shop and everyone is very much stoked about this. The only issue we all had is that Hal Jordan is a much more serious character than the way Reynolds is playing him. Ryan Reynolds would make a hell of a Kyle Rayner, but it's going to take me some time to get used to him as Hal.

Johns' run has taken the stick out of his ass. Hal was a hot shot flyboy, its only after he gets the ring and his ass kicked around by Sinestro does he become the conservative cop that people were glad to see turn heel and ultimately die.

Thanks for taking the time to write this up every week, Boffo. The only place I know to get the ratings is in the USAToday every Wednesday, and I haven't picked it up in a while.
