Little surprise; Red Sox to fire manager today (ESPN.com)

Bill Buckner could not be reached for comment.

Now the Red Sox beat writers might be jumping off bridges, as they mourn the loss of; in most of their views, the greatest baseball mind ever to grace the planet Earth.
For me, all I have to say is: Good-bye, Good Riddance, and go get a new shrimping boat or go back to playing ping-pong in China.
Time to look at the contenders for new manager of the Red Sox.

Tom Kelly: Two World Series Titles, would have talent to work with, and might have overcome his burn-out.

Ozzie Guillen: I've always liked him. Would get all the people bitching about minority hiring off the Red Sox back. Seems like he could be a long term manager.

Jerry Remy: My Lord and Savior. I hope he doesn't take the job, as he has the greatest scam in the world going as a cult hero who calls games and sells merchandise. True, it would mean not having to deal with Orsillo for 130 games, but why the hell deal with the stress when you have a job for life now. However, a clue might have been left when former Red Sox analyst Bob Montgomery returned from exile to call the Triple A championship series for the Red Sox top farm team.

Wally: Sure, Wally is an inanimate object. But he would be accepted by the fans, and would be able to manage a bullpen better than Grady did.

Gary Allenson: Mugsy. Why not, he's played in Boston and he's managed at Triple A. Former Red Sox catchers have been sought after for managing positions recently.

Rick Burleson: Bring back the Rooster. Has managed in the Northern League.

Willie Randolph: Don't want him. Has the potential to be an imbedded Yankee.

Joe Kerrigan: A possiblity, should nuclear armeggedon occur and he's the last remaining person on Earth. Even then, highly doubtful.

Ralph Houk: He's still alive, right? If so, at least we'll know we get a relaxing 81-81 and no one loses any sleep.

Dick Williams: He would be accepted by the fans. And hell, if Jack McKeon can still manage, why not Dick Williams?

LOL!!! I can see it now, Zim comes to take Pedro out of a ballgame and Perdo grabs him by the head and throws him off the mound.

Sox blow another chance to win the world series. More money for me!!!!

I would move to Boston, buy season tickets, and travel with the team for Pedro's road starts if that scenario happened.

Hehe @ Zimmer and Pedro roadshow.

I gotta question if the BoSox fought to a hard fought 5 game series with the A's and lost and the whole keeping Pedro in for to long vs. the Yankees therefore losing the game never happened... Would Grady still have been fired?

RSN: You may NOT have Ozzie Guillen! Dammit that is the only name in the managerial pool that the White Sox have looked at that doesn't make me want to stab my eyes out with a rusty spoon. The thought of Cito Gaston coming in is appalling, and for the love of Greg Luzinski why would they even think about Buddy Bell or Terry Francona? If they don't want to elevate Wally Backman then it's time for Ozzie to come home.

Red Sox ought to go down to Florida, bring giant sackfuls of cash, and try to get Jim Leyland out of retirement.

Yeah, Jim Leyland would be way different than Grady Little. All Leyland was concerned with was going down the tunnel to have a smoke.

I think the Sox ought to hire either Larry Dierker or Glenn Hoffman.

Its a fair question, but here are a few things that made it so that Grady needed to win the World Series to be retained. Reports are now coming out that John Henry had to be talked out of firing him in mid June when they lost 2 out of 3 to St. Louis and Grady was badly outmanaged by LaRussa. Then, Henry became incensed when Grady apologized to Jack McKeon about the Red Sox scoring 25 runs against the Marlins in late June, which was followed by the Red Sox showing no aggresiveness and losing the next game 10-9 after holding a 9-2 lead after 7. And, though no one has stated this publicly, just watching this team this year Grady was a late inning rally against the Blue Jays on the Saturday Night after the All-Star break from getting fired on the spot. They lost the last game to Detroit before the break, Grady let Manny and Pedro disappear early, then they lost the first two games and looked flat in the process. The Red Sox lose on that Saturday night, and I still think Grady would have been gone before the next day.

This is really a shame because this guy was the best player in baseball in the 90s and he should be the guy we all talk about instead of Bonds.
