We're taking a road trip to Boston, MA and on the way back stopping at Niagara Falls for the night. Some friends of ours moved back to Canada a couple of years ago, and they're relatively close to the falls, so we've decided to come back via far southern Canada.

It's going to be kind-of a long trip, so we'll probably just stop at a grocery market to check out all the new-to-us foods. We're entering at Niagara Falls and exiting at Detroit, so somewhere between there would probably be best.

Having said *all* that, what's a good Canadian market chain?

METRO is one worth checking out. Many locations even have Tim Hortons coffee shops, so you can get a taste of Canadiana there. It's a lot like Safeway, if you have one in your area.

Another chain is called Real Canadian Superstore, which is like Canada's own Walmart. Great prices, but you gotta pay for your grocery bags.

That is becoming more and more common here in the DC Metro area. In my area, we are charged a $0.10 per bag tax.

Your best bet would be Real Canadian Superstore or any of its associated stores (Loblaws, Extra Foods, Your Independent Grocer - there are several different associated chains and I'm not sure which are in Ontario - there's a big list on Wikipedia). Superstore locations are the biggest stores, but any of those will carry the President's Choice line which is unique to those stores.

Having said that, I'm sure you'd find some new (to you) stuff in any Safeway or IGA or whatever. As seen in this week's CRZ video series, look for weird potato chip flavours and candy bars.

I love cross-border grocery shopping. As we speak, I'm in Dallas and just got done drinking a Pepsi Next (bleh) and taunting hansen9j with visions of Flamin' Hot Cheetos Limon. The Texans LOVE their spicy or lime or spicy lime snack treats. There's tons of stuff here I haven't seen before. What is a "peanut rounder?" I don't know but it looks gross so I bought it and I'm going to make a friend of mine eat it.

I went to this Real Canadian Superstore during my Vancouver trip, but I didn't buy nearly enough. (I also chickened out on getting a durian!)

Because of 9/11, do you need passports these days to walk over to the Canadian side of the Falls? How about driving over? I seem to get a different answer anytime I ask someone.

We're in the process of getting our passports right now. The State Dept. website says you need a passport (or a passport card, which is only good for cruises and driving, not flying) when going to Canada.

(Thanks for the flag icon, CRZ)

I will thoroughly research all these ideas, thanks everybody!

Follow-up question, how annoying is a border crossing with fruits/veggies/etc.?

don't forget Chris Berman's advice and get some 222's

edit: as someone that usually goes to canada on vacation every year, if you have an itinerary, keep it handy, as the border guard may ask you for it. I've been asked for proof of my destination, like a hotel or tickets for a hockey game to which I'm going.

There are detailed rules here - I'd think you're best to stick to packaged foods.

I know that Canada has different laws and we get some fruit that you legally can't import into the US - CRZ couldn't have brought a durian across the border legally. Fresh saskatoon berries are also not allowed in the US.

Safeway isn't anywhere east of Thunder Bay.

Presidents' Choice is merely a store brand, like Walmart's Great Value, but with some pretty swank choices.

Hmmm...I don't doubt that you can't bring a durian across the border, but it's not as though you can't get durian here. Every Asian food store around here has them. However, they don't smell like the ones in Singapore--which are pretty darn lethal. Took me a couple of visits just to be able to stand being in the produce section there.

I'm going to have to look for these next time I'm there.

I'm pretty sure the connection is all the material in Star Wars that is similar to New Gods.
