Shaq and Kobe don't need to be re-energized by the addition of one or two guys that could motivate them to get their title back next year. I would absolutely hate to see Gary Payton or Karl Malone go to L.A. I'm just hoping that they don't sign anyone helpful and that Kobe gets frustrated with Shaq and bolts for somewhere else when his contract is up.

Now, if Payton or Malone wanted to sign with the Kings...that's another story. BTW, TRADE BIBBY.

I would just hate to see either of them cheat by winning a championship in a Lakers jersey. Anyone can win a title if they jump to an already-dominant team. Jackasses (Malone, Payton and the Lakers I mean, not you two.)

Man, that's harsh. It's not like all they'd have to do would be sign with the Lakers and get given a ring. Hell, they'd probably be a better chance, especially Malone, with Sacto or San Antonio. It's not as if the Lakers set the world on fire last season anyway, so its a bit of a stretch to call them an already dominant team.

They are pretty much the same team that won 3 straight titles ending last year. They are/were dominant, and there is no reaqson to think they won't be again. So they never caught up after Shaq's injury last year. Malone and/or Payton would still just compliment an already great team.

Tell that to Mike Mussina.

I think Malone/Payton are still waiting to see where Jason Kidd ends up. If he goes to San Antonio, who's to say M/P won't take the veteran's exemption or the pay cut to go to the Spurs?

Or, they could both go to Toronto. Right, right?

Did you even watch the NBA last year? The Lakers were Kobe (as good as ever), Shaq (still good but out-of-shape for most of the year), and 10 other guys who either were no good (Pargo, Madsen, Medvedenko, SAMAKI WALKER all should be Nuggets, not Lakers) or playing with big forks sticking out of their backs (Fox, Horry, Fisher).

Payton and Malone would be HUGE upgrades for the Lakers, as they would go from two great players and 10 crappy ones to two great players, two very good players, and eight others, some of whom should be better than they got last year (especially if the rookies can play well.)

I think these Lakers would be the favorite to win the West for sure, just ahead of the Spurs and Kings.

Well you know something, Mean Gene...
Jerry Buss might want to talk to the Houston Rockets about how overstuffing a roster with aging veteran all-stars affects a team. If the Lakers add Payton and/or Malone, that's 3-4 guys that will need the ball, and I don't see Shaq and Kobe willing to give up their shots to them, especially when they already struggle with each other on that very issue at times. The Lakers would be much better off trying to sign away good role players like Speedy Claxton and P.J. Brown to complement their 1-2 punch.

So you're saying they are NOT the same team as the three years before? Listing their entire roster doesn't mean anything or change my point...

What's wrong with either of them going to an established team and winning the championship?...I am not a fan of the Lakers, but if either went to the Lakers, you can't blame them, if they just want to be able to win a championship.

It's taking the easy way out. If they want to win a title so bad then fine. But a championship for them in LA wouldn't mean nerarly as much as a title in Utah or Seattle. It's taking the easy way out. They are (or would be) jumping to an already proven championship caliber team because they weren't able to lead their other teams to titles.

Yes, it may not mean as much as leading the team they played on for years to the championship. But, if they want it and go to a good team, you can't blame them. No one person can win a championship by themselves. Fuck Jordan too, without Pippen in the early championships and Rodman later on, he would not have been part of a champioship team.

I AM saying they're NOT the same team as three years before.

1999-2000 Lakers (ranked by minutes per game)
Shaq 40.0
Kobe 38.0
GLEN RICE 31.6
RON HARPER 25.5
A.C. GREEN 23.5
Derek Fisher 23.1
Robert Horry 22.2
Rick Fox 18.0
Devean George 7.0
JOHN SALLEY 6.7
TRAVIS KNIGHT 6.5

2002-03 Lakers
Kobe 41.5
Shaq 37.8
Derek Fisher 34.5
Robert Horry 29.3
Rick Fox 28.7
Devean George 21.7
SAMAKI WALKER 18.6
MARK MADSEN 14.5
BRIAN SHAW 12.5
KAREEM RUSH 11.5
STANISLAV MEDVEDENKO 10.7
JANNERO PARGO 10.1
TRACY MURRAY 6.2

So a lot of guys are the same, but they're three years older and it's not like they were young in the first place. You take the 3-4-5 minutes guys away from the 1999-2000 Lakers and replace them with the 7-12 guys from the 2002-03 Lakers. Plus, your talking about giving the older guys (Fox, Horry) many more minutes than they had received three years ago. I think it's asinine for you to say it's the same team they were three years ago, especially when they got totally exposed by the Spurs.

But you no what? They have NO CHANCE winning in Seattle or Utah. So you think they should just stay where they are and lose instead of win a championship? That's the stupidest thing i've heard.

I don't buy that Malone will be happy in LA with Kobe, Shaq and Payton having to have the ball too. But if Malone can get together with Shaq in the offseason and get him in shape then you can guarantee a MVP season for Shaq.

Not to nitpick (OK, to nitpick) but you keep mention "Seattle" in the same sentence as "Gary Payton" and "staying". Gary was traded to MILWAUKEE, and if he was staying someplace, it'd be THERE.

Seattle loves Ray Allen, though, even if we have no chance to win the championship.

Bucsfan, I understand why your name isn't "NBAfan". You're a fucking idiot when it comes to logic in terms of the NBA. People get down on superstars like Payton and Malone for STAYING with teams strictly for the money. These guys are showing that they would rather play in an environment that they would enjoy playing in, as well as the possibility of winning a championship. Instead of saying something moronic like "they should stick it out with their "home" teams and try to win a championship there, you should be praising these men for taking pay cuts in return for a legitimate shot at a ring. As it was said earlier, one person cannot carry a team to a championship so their staying with their respective teams would be futile.
And no, the Lakers of last season were NOT the same team as the Lakers who 3-peated. Anyone who has two working eyes could see that they were not as dominant or as healthy. Combine that with the factor of age and you have a completely different team.

Aw dawg, no need to be hatin'. And to reiterate what's already been said, if I were in the NBA for so long and I'm that desperate to win a title before my time runs out, I'd jump to a proven contender too.

All I'm saying is a title with the Lakers for them would mean nothing. And it wouldn't mean a damn thing.

I never said Payton should "stay" in Seattle.

Unless they go to LA and help the Lakers have the greatest season in history, then all they've done is jump aboard to ride a bandwagon that was winning well before they got there.

Would they really be champions, or people who couldn't live up to the challenge that their other teams presented? I guess I can't blame them for wanting a title so bad, but it's not the same as, say, David Robinson sticking with the Spurs and going out a champion. Or Michael Jordan answering his critics not by jumping to an already dominant team but by stepping up his game and almost single handedly turning the Bulls into champions.

Edit: this of course all means nothing if the Lakers don t win it all next year.
