One of the things that really annoyed me about the WWE in 2003 was the way they'd hype somebody huge, then just bury him with no reason why. A textbook example is definitely Ultimo Dragon. Remember all those mask promos we got in the spring? Then, he came, guns blazing at MSG in June...and we've hardly seen him on Smackdown since. Not that I don't mind Velocity (especially if they fired that neuter who hangs with Bill Demott, forgot his name), but I thought he was so great, he'd lead the next wave of cruisers on Smackdown. Never happened. Why? Cause McMahon hated his style. Too WRESTLING for you, Big Mack? So, it's with (dis)pleasure, I present this from 411:

Ultimo Dragon has not been happy with how WWE has been using him since he joined the company. One of his main goals when joining WWE was to work WrestleMania, but now he is questioning whether WWE will even book him to work WrestleMania. It now appears possible that Dragon may give up on the WrestleMania dream and look for a way to get out of his contract early.

Way to blow another one, WWE. Ironic that the cruisers division was one of the things that WCW did RIGHT.

After a quarter of a century on this planet, there's three things I know for sure...
1)I'm smarter than I was a year ago.
2)WWE isn't.
3) I'd make a fine Mrs. HHH II.

I seriously don't think Vince knows how to market Cruiserweight wrestlers. That's why he's never gotten behind the division- if he doesn't think it will draw him money, he won't give it the time of day.

What boggles the mind is that they dont seem to know how to market Ultimo. I mean, Rey is marketable because of his mask and i think Ultimo could be as well. We still havent really got our dream match-up with Rey and Ultimo, one on one for more than a 3 min match.

It's sad because once Tajiri became champ, the division seemed to get a spark as there was more emphasis on Noble, Ultimo (for awhile with the tease of whether he'd join Taj's faction), Akio and Sakoda and Rey. I guess Vince' short term vision came into play

Speaking of cruisers, this (disturbing) tidbit from the Torch:

"There is a story going around the Smackdown locker room that one of the cruiserweight wrestlers recently approached Vince McMahon and asked what he needed to do climb the company ladder. The story goes that McMahon replied, "If only you were six feet tall and a hundred pounds heavier." Make no mistake about it, the big men will still rise to the top of WWE as long as Vince is running the show."

Or looking at it another way, WWE could be protecting Ultimo for a megapush in the post-Royal Rumble "Road to Wrestlemania."

As we know, Tajiri has been gathering momentum, gaining henchmen, and generally establishing a certain dominance over the Cruiserweight Division. Rey Misterio and Shannon Moore are the only other cruiserweights being given a high profile position on the card. Ultimo is prospering beneath the surface on Velocity, but remains a #1 Contender's Match away from being positioned as Tajiri's dragon-slayer.

Picture this: Rey Misterio, who is now #1 contender for the Cruiserweight title, gets screwed out of a win. At the same time, Ultimo and Kidman, who are feuding with Akio and Sakoda, come into the fray to even the odds. From there, it's simple process of elimination to get to Ultimo. Or you can do a Triple Threat to set up Rey-Tajiri-Ultimo, as the alliance breaks down due to competition.

Fact is, in a few short months, a guy can go from "buried" to pushed, especially in the Cruiserweight division. If the WWE reverses position on Ultimo, he may get to Wrestlemania yet...

I like the sentiment, beleive me. After everything UD went through to get back into North America, that would be terrific. Buuuuut, I just think that's being overly optimistic, considering Ultimo's in the black hole of debuting and being buried afterwards. Maybe 1 guy in 20 bounces back from that. But it would take a concentrated effort and a few matches on Smackdown to get it on track. However, they seem to have made up their mind on him, and usually when that happens, that's the ballgame.

Vince thought that Ultimo Dragon was going to be an exact clone of Rey Misterio. Instead of actually watching some of Dragon's matches, Vince just signed him. Then, when he saw that he wasn't a "flying around the ring a mile-a-minute" performer, he wanted nothing to do with him. "SMALL GUYS DON'T STAY ON THE GROUND, DAMMIT! LEAVE THAT SHIT TO ALBERT!"

Well, I hope Dragon leaves and goes back to Japan, or anywhere else that his skill can be appreciated. Because, being stuck in Velocity hell is NOT the way to round out your career.

Ultimo Dragon is Rey Mysterio's WrestleMania gift, plain and simple. He was never meant to be a long term investment. And I'm sticking to that.

And if that's not the case, then so what? He wanted to work MSG, and he did. If he wants to walk, then let him. Boo-freakin-hoo.

Oh, and "not being pushed" does not equal "being buried."

Well, if you'll remember from Mick Foley's first book, Vince doesn't sign a lot of guys from first-hand experience. He's got talent scouts and guys like JR that come up to him and say, "This Ultimo Dragon guy's a living legend. We should sign him." And since Vince trusts these guys, he goes ahead and gives the o.k. Once somebody shows up in the company, though, Vince is the guy that ultimately decided who they're going to get behind. I agree that it's not necessarily the best way to run the business, but this is the way they've been doing it for years, and so far they've more or less done alright by it.

Hey, I just got this week's Wrestling Observer, and read this interesting tidbit:

Apparantley, Vince has been pushing for Ultimo Dragon to LOSE THE MASK!!! The other wrestlers aren't happy with this, as Ultimo has an ordinary look, and his costume is so cool.

Who does McMahon think he is? Eric Bischoff? Well, looking over the past couple of years' worth of booking, maybe he does.

That's funnier and funnier the more I picture Vince actually saying it aloud.

Someone should give Vince the boxing example. Don't most De La Hoya or Roy Jones fights draw a lot more than any Lennox Lewis title defence against someone not named Tyson???

I don't get the CW division anyway. Guys like Ultimo, Spanky and Paul London only show up when some big heel needs to get more over so they get squashed. I think the CWs need their own show, or at least some more CWs to make it an interesting division like in the old WCW days.

There's probably more cruiserweights on the roster than women in the women's division. It's just that they never do anything with them, much less let them on Smackdown. Has Paul London ever had a match on Smackdown? Ultimo Dragon, Kidman, Funaki and Spanky are really never on that show, Akio and Sakoda seem to be headed in the same direction, and Shannon Moore is simply being fed to big guys right now for no discernable reason. Velocity could easily become an "all cruiserweights" show, but I doubt that would really change anything.
