Several friends of mine have begun using GMail (Google's new email service for those who don't know). After some minor research, the main question that springs to my mind is one of security. Google claims that a user will be able to search all of his or her emails for specific words or phrases, much like one uses Google itself. While at first I thought "Great!", the paranoid version of me soon took over and wanted to know how safe it is to have all of your private mail stored in a database?

While there are some legitimate privacy concerns about GMail*, although I think most of them are overblown, I wouldn't be to concerned about your private e-mails being in a database. Unfortunately, your e-mails are already there unless you work for an incredibly benevolent, read stupid, company or school or you've set up your own mail server.

At my last 4 jobs, the sysadmins could, and did if concerns were raised about some issues, access anyone and everyones e-mail. Plus, the companies and schools saved all of the e-mail we sent and received for a set period of time, even if we had deleted it. At my brother-in-laws company, all e-mail is saved on a dedicated backup for an indefinite, as in they haven't deleted any in the last 5 years, amount of time.

*Full Disclosure: I have and love my gmail account.

Tim

I think the thing with Gmail is that most free email providers do this, and other things people are pissing and moaning about. Google's just more upfront about it.

I noticed that all of a sudden my hotmail account got jumped up to 250 MB of storage. It's just too bad that they did it after I had to delete everything to make room ...

I think that's in anticipation of Gmail's 1 GB of storage. So on that note, thank you Gmail!

NOTE: The above post makes no sense. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Speaking of GMail, I've got 4 or 5 invites that are going unused because basically everybody I know already has accounts. If anybody happens to want one, PM me and an account shall be yours.

I hate to sound like a spammer, but...

{ Sorry, you must be logged in to see this text! }

Has anyone toyed with the various G-Mail related programs?

(i.e. GMailFS, or the one where you can the G-Mail account as storage)

I like GMail...and it's really easy to use, but my only qualm is a very, very minor one: there's no way to customize the look. I don't particularily care for the colour scheme...but then again, that's just me :-)

Once again, thanks to Samoflange, who passed on an account invite my way. You da man!
