Glee returned last night after a month-long hiatus. If this episode is any indication of what they have planned for the rest of the season, they probably should have just stayed away.
There were many terrible decisions made by the writers this episode:
What was the point of bringing back Lauren Zizes if they weren't even planning on having her interact with Puck? Don't get me wrong, I was never a fan of this character, and I was more than satisfied with the way that she was written off at the beginning of last season, but why even bring her back if she had nothing meaningful to contribute to the story?
That cover of Baby Got Back was painful. Without a doubt, one of the worst covers that Glee has ever done. Changing up the melody and adding a little bit of twang to it was a terrible decision. The worst thing is, this isn't even an original cover - this arrangement wasn't even worth stealing. To his credit, Colfer sold the hell out of the scene, but it was a poorly constructed attempt to give Kurt a new love interest, and it just didn't work.
Puck getting together with Kitty was incredibly creepy, and only mildly amusing. There comes a point where Puck either needs to grow as a character, or be used solely as a punchline. This middle ground isn't working, and it's destroying all of the character development done with him at the end of the third season. I really hope that this doesn't lead to a storyline about statutory rape - that would be a bit much to handle, even for this show. Also, a joke about how Puck can't spell the word 'alone'? I thought that Glee would be above such low hanging fruit.
The only good that could come of this story is Jake somehow beating the shit out of Puck and knocking some sense into him. Speaking of Jake, now that he and Marley are an item, it seems that Ryder has pretty much been forgotten about. Sure his song at the end of the episode was nice, but I really hope the writers have some big plan for his character. It would be a shame to have him turn into the next Irish McGee. This actor deserves better than that.
Where is Schuester? He popped up for about five seconds during sectionals and pretty much disappeared after that. Is there any reason why Finn is still in charge of the Glee club?
Tina crushing on Blaine was just a rehash of the Mercedes/Kurt plot line in the first season. I've always hated Tina, but I feel bad for the actress. She always seems to have the worst plot lines. I really hope they don't drag this one out too long - although Tina declaring Blaine the love of her life at the end of the episode doesn't give me much hope.
In further developments on the New York side of the story, Rachel is still a total bitch, and Brody is still a tool that only matters to the plot when he is called to take off his shirt.
Finally, the most ridiculously stupid thing that Glee has ever done: The Warblers are using steroids. I understand that the New Directions need to get back into the competition somehow, but this was a dumb way to go about it. I couldn't believe that this actually was approved in the writers room. If this was a social commentary about Lance Armstrong, it was a failure. If this was an attempt at comedic relief, it was a failure. If this was a legitimate attempt to move the story forward in any meaningful way, god help us all.
The version of baby got back Glee stole from Jonathan Coulton who made the music track, they didn't ask him, didn't pay him, didn't credit him.
According to Jonathan Coulton, the show's policy is not to credit "covers of covers," so it's seemingly not unusual for Glee to air a performance without acknowledging its performer. Instead, he was told that he should be "happy for the exposure." "They do not credit me, and have not even publicly acknowledged that it's my version - so you know, it's kind of SECRET exposure," he wrote. Coulton also stated that Glee doesn't seem to be legally obligated to pay or credit him, but he's still investigating whether or not the show used his audio, which he thinks is likely.
Dont say its not worth it, when you can sleep with no fear, that kind of time is worth any thing.- FFX
Interesting the way Agents of SHIELD has migrated from being an 8PM show aimed in part at young people to being a 10PM show. Time After Time was a great movie, but I'm not sure I want it as a series after all these years.
