The first "dominant" big man in the NBA. RIP George.

"Since they filmed the football scenes so tightly (quick edits, no wide shots), there's no way to tell where Sandler ranked on the Realistic Athlete Scale (with Reynolds being a 17-out-of-10 and Tim Robbins being a negative-5). My guess is that Sandler was shaky enough that they masked his "abilities" in post-production, a strategy that Bill Parcells should consider with Drew Bledsoe this season"....from Bill Simmons column reviewing the new and original versions of "The Longest Yard".

Shaq has said a lot of dumbass stuff lately, but that is a really classy move.

Mikan's later years (as told by ESPN) seem sad to me. He's been living off a $20,000 per year pension and had to sell his MVP trophy to pay for dialysis. This while Mark Blount and other stiffs makes MILLIONS of dollars. Billy Hunter and the players union ought to do right by the older retired players than they have done. It's a shame.

Mikan changed the game. Goaltending was legal until Mikan ame along. The NBA doubled the width of the foul lane because of Mikan. Without Mikan, there are no Los Angeles Lakers. He was the first dominant big man and the NBA's first superstar. God bless him and his family.

A true legend passes away. Mikan was the man in the BAA and NBA's early years, and it can be argued that without him, professional basketball might not have gained the popularity it needed to get to the Bill Russell Celtics era, let alone the modern era.

Condolences to his family and all who knew him, and a truly classy move by Shaquille in paying for his funeral. I think it would've been even classier if it hadn't been publicized, and I think maybe he could have given his friend some money so he could've lived a better life towards the end, but I'm not going to demonize him.
