To many of you, he was just the guy who did the Sports Machine show. To us DC area folks, he was THE sportscaster of the DC area. He was the NBC 4 sports anchor from 1980 to 2007. He also had two different roundtable shows about the Skins and Bullets/Wizards featuring people like Korney, Wilbon, Riggo and other Redskins legends.
agreed. I used to never miss Sports Machine when I lived in the Chicago area. It wasn't on when we moved down here.
It was THE sports show to watch before ESPN

And to those of us in New York, he was the legendary nighttime DJ on WABC--"the most listened-to station in the nation"--during much of the 70s. He along with his colleagues at that station (including Harry Harrison, Ron Lundy, Dan Ingram, and Chuck Leonard) were instrumental in kicking off my lifelong love affair with radio. He was one of the guys I wanted to be when I grew up (and indeed I did radio professionally for many years).
I fear, though, that some people will see the subject line and think it was the former Wham! singer who passed away.
The Sports Machine was awesomely cheesey even in it's prime. I loved the buttons and recorders and gadgets and all of that. I'll give him props for being one of the only real sports guys to throw in a wrestling clip every now and then. He had a fun show.
Michael was on the Mike Wise Show a few weeks ago and was absolutely awesome for about 20-30 minutes. This is terribly sad. I remember watching Silence of the Lambs and hearing Michael's voice on a newscast Jodie Foster was watching. His voice was so distinctive that I picked it out immediately.
He was the best and one of the true legends of broadcasting. He will be missed.
Am I in Horseville? Because I'm hearing nothing but naysayers!
AWA Rulz, you must not have been in the greater Louisville area back in the late 80's when we were graced with the Sports Machine on (I believe) the local NBC affiliate very late on Sunday evenings. I still remember his "rant" against the WWF for not letting him show highlights of the just-ended PPV's for all of us who couldn't afford to get them or didn't have cable in our dorm rooms.
Was finally able to get cable after moving off campus for my senior year (1991), which begat a long gorgefest on all things ESPN and I forgot about Mr. Michael and his wonderous Sports Machine.
As Merry Christmas as possible to his family and all of his fans. He will definitely be missed. R.I.P.

No, we moved here in 95, and the Sports Machine wasn't on NBC (that was WAVE then as now). I remember noticing it right away
