I'm really not suprised or disappointed for that matter. George Lucas has been saying this for quite some time. AND Van Ling, who produces all the Star Wars DVD, has stated that they have "no plans" for theatrical versions of Star Wars on DVD.

Anyway, like many, I'm pretty disenchanted and sick of Star Wars. Its popularity peaked out in 1999 before the release of Phantom Menace, and I think interest will continue to wane. I really have no love for the phenomena anymore, and its really just dated now. Star Wars isn't the top dog, its been replaced by new arguably better properties. Besides Star Wars stole most of its material from DUNE and Kurosawa.

So...you're saying that the main feature on the DVD for, say, A New Hope, will be the Special Edition...and that the original cantina scene with actions that make sense...won't be on it at all? Not even as deleted/alternate scenes?? EVER???

Wow. I hate George Lucas.

But I'm still buying the DVDs.

C'mon! It's Star Wars!

So, am I reading this right? The Star Wars I grew up watching is dead, but the new releases with extra computer animation will live on?

Lucas has become to attached to the computer graphcis. He should go into cartoons and left his series at 4-6.

EDIT: 'Greedo shoots first'...I'm assuming that Han shoots first in the original. Is Greedo as bad a shot as the Storm Troopers and can't hit from point blank range?

Also why are the Storm Troopers so effective in Ep II but can't hit the side of a barn in Eps IV-VI ?

The sad thing is in 1997ish I had everything Star Wars, a life size Boba Fett cutout, all the video games, books, etc.... but after Phantom Menace and all the shit, like killing Chewie in the books, I don't even care anymore. At one time I knew the name of every bounty hunter in the scene where Vader tells Ig-88 and Fett and the rest to find Han, damn it all Lucas has messed up!! The first and original 3 had great special effects, I couldn't see anything wrong! The worst is the new movies have made Darth Vader a pussy! The greatest movie villian ever, the guy who made me cry when I was 4, and they make him into some snot nosed kid who dribbles off shitty love lines. Also the plot makes no FUCKING SENSE NOW!!! Are we supposed to believe the Empire was only around for 20-30 years!?! Christ, it pisses me off so much, I refuse to see Episode II just so I won't hate the first three (Ep 4-6). I'm just glad Han Solo isn't in the first three Episodes because I'm sure Lucas would have made him the biggest pussy ever. Sorry to rant, but Lucas took three of the best movies ever, with GREAT characters, and then decided to make movies with no plot and half rate computer animation replacing everything.

Ditto for me.

And I really don't think that Episode II made Anakin too much a pussy. He still slaughtered the Tusken Raiders.

He cried like a little bitch afterwards but it still shows he could snap and he does have The Darkside in him. And I fully expect him to go full badass in Ep. III.

And wasn't Chewie killed just to prove the Vong as a major threat ?

Chewie was killed in the stupid fanboy novels that don't mean anything. If it didn't happen in the movies, it didn't happen.

I've been feeling this way since Phantom Menace as well. I was just so underwhelmed by that movie, and disappointed by all the changes to the mythos (where the hell did Qui-Gon come from?), not to mention the complete waste of what could have been an amazing villain, that I didn't even bother with When Clones Attack. I mean, I still love the first three movies, to the point that I was able to live with the SE changes, even though I didn't like them much (Han will always shoot first!), but I don't really care much about the new stuff.

I agree with you completely, I didn't see the Clone Wars either except for the Yoda part which was stupid... are we supposed to believe that in 30 years or so Yoda went from Jedi Master flipping around like a ninja to a total invalid relying on the force for everything!? Still, no character will ever be as cool or badass as Han. Han was the only man who NEVER FEARED fighting Vader outside of Obi Wan. How beautiful was it when Han, knowing he couldn't win still shot at Vader, just because he's a badass like that. Han is to Star Wars what Strong Bad is to Homestar Runner, the stories may *techincally* be about Homestar and Luke, but its Strong Bad and Han that make us care. Although Luke is still cool.

Umm, didn't Lucas say at some point back that the novels were 'cannon' a while back. With a few exceptions of course, like Splinter of the Minds Eye(which was pretty good actually). If not, this is almost sad, cause while most of it is total crap, SOME of them are really good and even surpass the films in some instances. An example...

The Timothy Zahn 'Heir to the Empire' trilogy would make extremly KICK ASS films. I remember when these were coming out, Lucas saying how he had wished he had come up with the Admiral Thrawn character. The little bug creatures that can cancel out the Force was a very interesting idea that should have made it's way to the screen in some way as well. Also, the Dark Horse comics series DARK EMPIRE made Luke seem less of a pussy then he was and expanded on the whole Clone thing long before anything else did.

But generally, the 'in print' stuff DOES suck very much.

Thrawn is great. He actually appears as a lower ranked (not Grand Admiral but still high up) officer of the Empire around the Empire Strikes Back time during the X-Wing video game saga (he is in Tie-Fighter)

Its a work.
That is all I have to say! Lucas is brilliant at smoke and mirrors when it comes to commercialization of his product. I, for one, remember the ad campaign for the black-box original trilogy, where they pumped it as "The last time EVER you will get the original Star Wars on DVD. Couple of years later- here comes the special editions, and then they were sold.
Na- Lucas will sell the Special Edition DVDs, and then a couple of years later, release "Special Edition" DVDs that include the original theatrical release on the disk. Na- he is screwing with our heads to make us buy more Star Wars crap. And he is a genius, because it will work.
As far as Yoda's scene in the Clone Wars- no complaints here. He was an invalid in that movie too, he could just DO those things when he used the force. Nowhere in Empire Strikes Back did it say that he could NOT do that stuff- all they said there was that Yoda was a "great warrior." It makes perfect sense that he would only go into full blown ninja mode when it was necessary. And he never encountered that situation in the original trilogy.
I LIKED the Clone Wars. I even felt that for what the Phantom Menace was intended to be, that was a good movie too. I think that much like wrestling, people just like to bitch because it turned out to be something different than they imagined. I look forward to the next one...

I agree with the statement that if it didn't happen in the movies, it didn't happen. Sure, Lucas may go all "I love the books" to sell them and make licensing moolah, but the fact is that he retconned a lot of stuff with Episodes I and II, eliminating the stories from some books. So, who cares if it happened in the books? It doesn't count!

Also, I liked Episode II because they actually made Anakin likable in the first bit...then little by little he became a whining child. I like that. Fear is the power to the darkside. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering. Anakin fears loss, which leads him to HATE the Tusken raiders and make them suffer. And my guess is that Episode III will have more fear revealed.

Now, if only they could do LESS computer stuff.
