I know theres an old Xbox PS2 debate, but I'd like to know which of these two I should purchase. On one hand, I want the PS2 for the GTA games, but Cube is cheaper and still has pretty good games. Any thoughts?

I've been collecting videogames since the NES and Sega Master System days. The GameCube is waaaaaaaaay better than the PS2.

Go to Electronics Botique. You can buy a GameCube, Memory Card, and Any Game and get a $50 mail in rebate. If you get Metroid Prime as that "Any Game" you also get $20 off that. You'll be much happier than if you got a PS2.

Can't go wrong with either of the two. ICEMAN's got the right idea.

But seriously, I'd say the PS2 over the GC. I just like what the PS2 has in game selection. But that will all change as time goes on.

Yeah, well, I've been collecting videogames since the Atari 2600 and Intellivision and "Radio Shack TV Scoreboard" Pong-clone days. Call and raise. The PS2 is waaaaaaaay better than the GameCube.
It's all about the exclusives. There are lots of quality games that you can get for either system; focus on the ones that you can't. Which would you rather play -- Grand Theft Auto, Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, Tekken, DDR, Virtua Fighter 4 and Devil May Cry, or Eternal Darkness, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Mario games, Animal Crossing, Monkey Ball and the upcoming Metroid Prime? There is no "correct" answer to that last question. Let your answer be your system-selection guide. Myself, I'd take the PS2 lineup in a heartbeat, but that's me.

I have all three. I get more mileage out of the 'Cube than the other two put together. (Hell, the Xbox doesn't do much more than collect dust and wait for the Star Wars RPG these days.).

For some man-szied discussion go to this thread;

http://wienerville.slashwrestling.com/thread.php?id=6658

Also scattered about this board is some VG Reviews (cheap plug) for some GameCube games.

I own a Cube and use a friend's PS2. I get more out of my GC, and I know I would even if I had a PS2. I do like them both though, just one more than the other. To throw even more into the mix, if you like old school games, then a GBA is a great buy (I play mine a lot).

Count me in as someone who's more than happy with his PS2.

Eventually, I'll probably get one of the other two systems as well. And seeing as how the Star Wars RPG is (apparently) going to be an XBox-exclusive, I'm leaning towards that.

But in the meantime, if you're a fan of the Grand Theft Auto series, it's worth getting a PS2 just for that. And if you do get a PS2, as I've said, you owe it to yourself to buy Vice City.

Well nyah- I still PLAY my Atari 2600! The console with the WOOD PANELING! Berzerk rocks!
I struggled with that question mightily before buying my Gamecube... I will still likely pick up a PS2 eventually, but I like the cube. I get so much gameplay out of it it is silly. Between Mario games, Tony Hawk, Madden, Smash Brothers, Rogue Leader, Animal Crossing (god, my Gamecube is on 6-8 hours a day between my roomate and I due to THAT game), the upcoming Zelda... I have never been disappointed with my purchase, Plus with the cube you get the Game Boy Advance features, the Wavebird, and history. With the PS2 you get more games (not like Nintendo really does not have enough, though) and a crappy DVD player (I got one of those, a good one, thanks...) I think the Gamecube is a better buy...

A Star Wars RPG would be the ONLY,ONLY,ONLY reason why I buy a X-BOX.

And I don't really know what makes the PS2 a "crappy" DVD player. I don't think its great but its still adequate.

Personally, I bought the PS2 about a year ago and haven't had a single regret. Quite frankly, I look at what the GC has to offer and I'm completely indifferent to it. Plus, they have the worst goddamn commercials for all their shit. That alone would detract me from ever buying buying one. But seriously, here's what it comes down to: which system has the games you want and is coming out with the games you're most looking forward to? Don't let price or DVD players get in the way unless its really neck and neck. If you can't decide, ask yourself if you'd rather have a decent DVD player(I personally have no problems with it) or an extra $50.

you've never had customers come back to your store and keep returning rental dvds and complaining that all our dvd's in our store are "worthless" because they won't play right on their player.

which players do they have? PS2 or X-Box.

Matrix is usually the one that has the most problems with those players.

i hear that playback isn't all that great, and it's also a barebones player.

I have the Matrix DVD and I've never had a problem playing that or any other DVD on my PS2 and I have a launch-day PS2.

And I personally think the playback is great. I just bought the Spider-Man DVD and it looked awesome.

And PS2 owners can update their DVD player by buying a DVD remote for like 20 bucks, you update your driver and you save it on your memory card.

Plus you get a nifty remote with it too.

I have both the Game Cube and PS2. When I bought the PS2, it was for Tony Hawk3. It was the best game system I had ever played.

For me, the PS2 just doesn't do it for me any longer. When I play video games, it means that the 36" TV in the living room is in use - so it has to be either a game that everyone in the house can play, or a game that people can at least watch and not be bored to tears.

That's pretty much ruled out PS2 games.

Gamecube has a lot of party games, and has the 4 player built in by default - which encourages game companies to support it. I realize that you can also get 4 player mode on the PS2, but it depends on an add-on, and so because of this I think multiplayer is down-played.

*In my opinion* the GameCube is a better all-around system. PS2 has some better games for one person only - but I still haven't found a game for it that matches the fun we all have playing Mario Party 4 or Super Monkey Ball 2.

Of coure, Chu Chu Rocket is my all time favorite game... so what do I know.

Your analogy is similar to:

"They already have cars that you can drive, why not blenders?"
"I can already write with my hands, why not my pancreas?"
"They already have beef that I can eat, why not granite?"

They're all opinions, nothing wrong with that.

The above is nicely put; I have very little use for multiplayer games (as I have few friends, no life and no future), so the PS2 is perfect for me. (When we're in that mood, I break out Poy Poy for the PS1, but I sincerely doubt anyone else here has THAT one.) When I do want to go multiplayer, that's why I own a Dreamcast.

Why does everyone keep saying that the PS2's DVD player is inferior? I've used it to play all my DVDs and even assorted rentals and I've never had any problems. In fact, it's more reliable than my DVD player, which crapped out on me once. It IS a GPX that was only about 130 bucks, though.

My PS2 DVD player hasn't given me any problems, either. In fact, it plays The Matrix slightly better than my real DVD player does.

However, working at Blockbuster, I know there are some PS2 systems that have this problem. I don't know... I guess the best bet is to call Sony customer support if there's anything wrong with your PS2.

It's all about the game catalog. Personally, I've never liked the Mario style "party" games, and I've never understood the fascination with Zelda. However, many, many people do love those games.

I'm pretty much a sports game nut, and it's all about EA for me (though I get wrestling games too). While EA does make a few games for Nintendo, historically they've supported other systems with a larger selection. Thus, I've got the PS2 (plus since I had a PS1, and it crapped out on me, I didn't want all my PS1 games going to waste).

But with all this talk, it's really not a matter of one system being better than the other. It's just the type games you like. I will say while I've never had a problem with the DVD player, I wouldn't let the DVD weigh much into the decision. Afterall, you're buying a game system, not a DVD player.

Where I work, my boss has a theory about the PS2. If you never, ever move it, not even half an inch, when it's on, and don't move it around very often when it's off, then it should be fine, and that it's a piece of shit hardware (except for the controller). Of course, he thinks all sony hardware is shit. His list of DVD player brands that suck is basically Goldstar, Sony, RCA and maybe some other brand that I cannot remember.

If you don't plan to be a moron and bounce your PS2 around for no reason, then it shouldn't break, and in fact should be fine. But, that should be obvious to to most poeple.

And it's all about the games, like everyone else has said. Whichever one has the most games you want to play is the one for you to get.
