I used to regularly fling my controler at the NES, making the game pop up and the entire system reset. Especially if I was playing Dragon Warrior or something, just made it out of some long cave, and died before making it back to the castle to save.

The thing that pissed me off about action games is I'd spend all this time trying to beat a boss, or get through a particular section - then there would come that one time where I *almost* made it. And then either lost because of some stupid error. And then it would take hours to get to that point again. I'm thinking of Grand Turismo and Grand Theft Auto here.

Battletoads. Good god that game goes from hard to impossible at about level 3. I got it when it first came out (1990ish?) and didn't beat it until 2 years ago when my roommates and I were going old school w/ the NES. Seeing that sorceress lady vanish was one of the finest moments of my life. It almost makes up for the fact that there's hardly any ending after beating it. Reportedly there's an extra level if you beat the game w/o continuing (or dying?), which I can't even fathom.

The close second would be River City Ransom, at which I'd accidentally run into walls and die, and have to start way back at the previous town w/ half my money gone.

I am quite possibly the worst "Grand Theft Auto" player ever. I got VC for Christmas, the only other version that I had ever played was a Sega Genesis game. I know that at this point of the game, I SHOULD be filthy rich. Yet I barely scape by because I suck! It always takes me many times, and lots of dough it seems, to complete any mission.

Now I read about "Driver" and realize I have no shot. Yet I know I will try and try and try again. Pure torture. If I do win this game, I'll probably actually have negative dollars!

Oh well, I eventually won 'Driver 2'. I guess I'll eventually win this too (probably by pure luck, which is the only reason I've gotten by several missions already)

One more game mention from me, and I now remember how much I hated Ninja Gaiden. The worst thing about this game was going through the final level. You work and work and you could start from any of the boards in that level EXCEPT for the final boss fight. If you lost that fight (which I did constantly), you start at the very beginning of the level.

I had countless sleepness nights going and regoing (probably not a word, but oh well) through that level. In fact I never did beat the last guy. I was so pissed that when Ninja Gaiden II came out, I used invincibility cheat codes just so I wouldn't have to get pissed off with this game like I did with Ninja Gaiden.

I remember doing that with one of the race missions on GTA3 after several thousand tries. Hillary, for some reason, didn't give me too much trouble. But, I did get rather lucky and got a tremendous head-start when a cop came flying through the air and T-boned his ass a few seconds into the race. (:

Mega Man, the first. Ice Man's stage, and my first experience with the bane of platformers... the vanishing platforms. A friend and I teamed up to bust one of the nigh-indestructable (to a kid, at least) NES controllers over that stage.

More recently, there's Tony Hawk 2 and the Street Fighter EX series. Oh, maaaaan, lemme tell ya. I'm what you might call a completist. If a game's worth beating, it's worth beating into the ground and making it cry, as far as I'm concerned. So I generally won't go on to the next stage/whatever until I've completely done everything I possibly can, which is generally why it takes me a million years to beat an rpg.

Anyway. The high score goals on THPS, and the super-hard combo trial things in SFEX... there was a point during THPS that I actually broke one of my PS controllers by twisting it until it snapped 'cause I came within, like, inches of grabbing one of those damn tapes...

Final Fantasy IX.

I have finished it, but it took almost a year.

HEY! Don't laugh at me. I'm one of those people who DON'T use gamesharks and I refuse to get on the internet to find out what I'm supposed to do in EXACT detail.

I did, however, go back to EB and get the guide book for it, which I wish I had looked at it first. NO maps what so ever and everything they tell you to do in the book is rather vague and pointless.

I was trying to get through the MOGNET thing, but you can't find them all without help it seems. This is quite a large quest, the MOGNET is, and in the guide book, theyve got only one paragraph telling you what to do, about a fourth of a page in content and a side bar blurb telling me to go to PLAYONLINE.com for more information. EVERY FUCKING PAGE in the book tells me to go to PLAYONLINE.com at least 3 different times. The book was the biggest waste of money ever for me. I was SO pissed of.

I still haven't finished the MOGNET quest though... I still try every few weeks. It's sad because this ended up being my 2nd favorite FF game and I can't actually finish the whole thing.

ALSO, it took 5 months to FINALLY breed a Gold Chocobo in FFVII. 5 MONTHS, this took way longer then it should have.

I feel your pain... I blew three good weeks trying to unlock EVERYTHING in THPS2. Most without cheating, too. Of course, the completist gene is hindering me in Animal Crossing... I don't want to throw out ANYTHING.

A roommate of mine had picked up the FFIX guide when he picked up the game, and I thought it was the worst guide ever, as, as you pointed out, it was simply a fifteen to twenty dollar advertisement for the online services. Screw that! Gamefaqs is free. I hope the more recent strategy guides aren't quite so blatantly bad...

Don't bother with Mognet unless you really feel the need to. The Mognet sidequest gives you a useless peice of armor for Steiner, IIRC. Though I loved the gold chocobo quest in FFIX

Never did the Chocobo breeding in FFVII because it was boring and tedious and you had to build up a ton of money to do it. So I never saw the Knights of the Round Summon. Oh well.

But all you have to do to see Knights of the Round is beat Emerald Weapon. Emerald is a pushover (of course I say that after fighting Ruby and the arena monsters in FFX).

I remember that! Freaking awful game. Think I had it on the Amstrad or some such back in the day. Wouldn't wish attempting to complete it on my worst enemy.

Also vaguely rember some side-scrolling beat-em-up called Dragon something or another. That was shit hard too.
And damned Batman on the Amstrad too. His flaming rope thingy never went where I wanted it to resulting in me tumbling to an unseemly death on numerous occasions.

Space Ace and Dragon's Lair were also kind of hard back in the day for me. I was used to killing anything and everything and it took quite a while and tons of cash to realize that sometimes, all you need to do is walk out the other door or duck. I was so frustrated when I found out that on one particular part of DL, all you had to do was walk out the door. There WERE things to get from the room, but you were not supposed to. THAT'S STUPID! Why have the option to do something when you are not supposed to do it? And why have a sword when you barely use it, what's the point.

Space Ace was equally as obnoxious because I kept wanting to shoot everything and it wouldn't let me. I hated that.

Taito, the makers of these games, also had a Lupin III game called 'Cliff Hanger' that used animated cuts from Castle of Caglistro and a Galaxy Express 999 called 'Freedom Fighter' By the time these came out I had already gotten the hang of those type of games.

My temper is legendary when it comes to video games.

Madden 2003 makes me swear and swear all the time.

I dropped the People's elbow on my controller (and destroyed it) playing some wrestling game where HHH and Undertaker were like facing God. Wrestlemania 2000 for the N64 i think. I blame the White Russians for that.

I absolutely shattered a playstation controller playing...Madden 2001 i think.

Another controller shattered playing Majora's Mask. I will never touch that damn game again. My patience for RPG's is just miniscule. So when i beat bosses in FF7 I just give it the old DX/Pete Weber "Suck It" sign.

My entire Nintendo system went across the room, putting a hole in my door, after one of those throw the controller, reset the system tantrums. It still worked...and works. Dig Dug rules!!!

Man... I'm with ya. I beat it, but I had to, well... buy the strategy guide. It made me feel so old, buying the guide. I'd never bought a guide in my life. The thing was just so damn complicated; especially the water temple.

Blaster Master, Golgo 13, Ninja Gaiden -- got to the end of them all and got toasted.

Btw, Cerebus, Cliff Hanger had both Castle and Mamo clips intertwined. The majority is Castle, but there are some Mystery of Mamo clips in there. Being young at the time, I always got pissed at Konami's Track and Field due to the hurdles. Never could pass that event.

Looking at the game today, the old man in me was sad at some of the character designs, including Suicide Girl Harley Quinn. (Of course, she has an even worse new look in the DC reheat) Sorry for not posting a link earlier, Cubs.
