As of yesterday, a GBASP is only 79 bucks. Even though I should have waited about 3 months to see if the DS will be as good as I think it will be, I was suckered in all the same. Even with people in places like Insidepulse.com telling me that I am dumb for buying it, I did it.

I also went to EB Games and turned in 5 games (PS2), and I got 20 bucks added to the value of the games that I turned in, so the GBA with Mario Golf: Advance Tour (damn you, Nintendo connectivity with GC's Mario Golf game) came out to 90 dollars when last week it would have cost 140 dollars.

I don't see too many people doing what I did, but I thought that I should ask some questions all the same. Would any of you be swayed by a game system purchase when a new system would be coming out?

I know for me that while the DS looks good, there probably won't be too many games out at system launch. I would thus not buy a DS until months after it came out when either a Zelda or Metroid game comes out for the system.

Would the price break like this one for the SP sway you? Or do you just see this as a real desperation move by Nintendo? I have to admit that it was a combination of the price break plus reading about the EBGames trade-in value that cinched the deal for me. I also plan on buying either Dr. Mario or Castlevania when it comes out for the SP, and that was another factor.

What's your take on Nintendo's latest move?

I think it's a great deal aat $79. I thought the SP was a good value at $99 when you consider the amount of money saved on batteries during the life of an SP vs a regular GBA.

Do they even sell the regular GBA any longer? I can't imagine why you would buy one.

As for telling people not to buy it now - I'm not so sure I agree with this. The DS may or may not be a great system, but the SP definitely is right now. There are hundreds of games available for the GBA, and thousands for the Game Boy.

You will probably feel like you've gotten your money's worth out of this in the first month - so I wouldn't feel too bad about getting in at the end of the life of the SP.

I think it's a good move right now. The DS will not be easy to get your hands on until after Christmas anyway. You know coming out in November you'll have to line up at midnight just to get one and you'll be lucky to see any on the actual shelf until probably February. Plus with it being backward compatible and the SP not being that old I would think it'll be a year or so before they really start scaling back on the SP stuff.

That said, I do want me a DS. I think the PSP will be a nice system, but the price will be a huge problem for most families and thus it has really no chance to unseat Nintendo as the portable king. This wasn't a desperation move by Nintendo, it was just planning in advance for the DS launch, knowing that people might hold off on getting an SP with a new system so close.

Anyway, do yourself a favor and try to pick up Astro Boy. Awesome game.

Smart move by Nintendo...knock the price down 3 months before Christmas, which should spike sales pretty quickly. I have thought about buying one, but I've held out so far.

Dammit, it figures that they dropped the SP price by $20 two weeks after I bought one. Ha! I wonder if I can use that excuse to get me some store credit-- of course, I'm gonna be moving in about two weeks, so I don't know what kinda good it'd do me.

I love the SP, by the way. I got Mario 3 for it, and in many ways it's better than ever.

I might have to give in as well...I have zero interest in the DS or whatever it's called, but now that the SP is down this low I may have to get one. If nothing else at least I can have a portable Fire Pro and a couple Metroid games.

Another reason for my purchase is that I think 79 was the lowest they would go for the SP until well after the DS launch. They have to ride that out for a while, and again in my case the lower price now got me hooked on purchasing the game.

Like Ekedolphin brought up with the Mario 3 mention, I am enough of a Nintendo nostalgia fetishist to want these old games. I bought Mario Party 5 mostly in order to get the Zelda collection for the GC. I borrowed the Fusion game to get to play the Metroid game available on GC. Releasing Nintendo games on SP is a great incentive for me.

I'm just glad I waited for a price break for the SP (sorry Eke!).

I see Nintendo's double dripping strategy worked once again. Different colors GameBoys, and "exclusive" Pokemon colors and game versions. Please...

I do admire their a$$hole tactics though to get more money though. Get people who were on the fence about buying an SP to buy one by dropping the system a measly $20. And then if they know it or not relase a new systm in a few months. Moohaha...suckers! I can already hear the parents now about buying an SP now and then being asked again for X-Mas by kids to get a DS. You would think being adults some of us would be smart enough not to fall for Nintendo's plans.

A few months from now when the DS is released, I will have the $79.99 you all spent toward a duplicate redesigned system you already owned and put it towrad a NEW different system.

Silly people...

The "asshole tactics" you speak of are pretty much the same thing any business does when they are bringing out a new model or version of something.

It's not a ripoff and you're not a "sucker" if you've had your eye on a GBA-SP and were just waiting for a price break. If anything, it shows restraint and discipline by not having to rush out and buy it right away. I learned MY lesson after I bought an XBox at midnight at launch, and only a few months later they dropped the price 100 bucks.

And a year after you get your "new system" I will also buy it, but for significantly less than you paid for it because I waited for a price break.

...it works both ways.

Not all people make purchases based on the future promise of a system. There are plenty of concrete reasons to buy a GBA SP at this point in time.

You can't just call everyone a sucker because they don't have the same thought process that you do.

I don't think the DS will grab my attention for a number of reasons:

1) I'm still mainly playing the same games I was playing months ago. I really like Advance Wars 2 and Puzzle Fighter.

2) My needs are met by the GBA SP. I play for between 20 minutes and 1 hour when I am on the SP. Generally it is while I am waiting for laundry, a trolley, or something like that where I don't necessarily want to be in front of a console system. I don't have any needs that aren't being met by the SP at this time.

3) I've already got a Palm Pilot that does all of the toy tasks that the SP will do, and it does them 10x better.

4) I don't need wireless networking at this time.

That said, I'll probably still a new handheld eventually - but I don't expect that it will be within the next two years.

I think you should have waited. Simply because the DS can play GBA games. Since you want the DS too you would have saved money. But if you just can't wait I understand, I am the same way when I want something. What is weird is, I have my Clie loaded with GBA games and I never play it. But I was playing with my friend's SP last weekend and I couldn't put the damn thing down. Actually, I pretty much stole it since I never reminded him to grab it before he left my house. In fact I am at work with it in my pocket now. Don't worry, his office is next to mines and I will drop it off when the battery dies since I don't have the charger. ;)

To buy the GBA-SP or not, that is the question..but you gotta give props to Nintendo for the backwards compatibility between the original Game Boy and the 32 bit brethren. Much like what Sony did with the PS2, allowing prior technology play on the system only maks it more attractive to me.

But with that said, I bought the GBA-SP, and I didn't like it. I have big hands, and the buttons are too awkwardly placed for my personal comfort. After trying it out, I decided to return to the original GBA, which, I admit...doesn't get much play since I picked up my PS2.

I'm intrigued by the DS, though.

True. It'd be interesting, though, if you could interrupt a finisher with a finisher. Say, if The Rock is trying to hit the People's Elbow on Cena, and you're playing as Edge, you could interrupt him by hitting a Spear.
