http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2011/10/20/libyan-fighters-say-they-have-captured-gadhafi/?iref=BN1

Deposed Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi has been killed, interim Libyan Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril told reporters in Tripoli on Thursday. There are conflicting reports surrounding the circumstances; Libya's ambassador to the United Kingdom says that Gadhafi's body is in Misrata, Libya.

A different source - a spokesman for a member of the Tripoli military council - says that one of Gadhafi's sons, Mutassim, and Gadhafi's chief of intelligence, Abdullah al-Senussi, also have been killed.

In another major development, revolutionary fighters said they wrested control of Sirte on Thursday. And NATO said it is going to convene soon for a meeting to discuss ending its operation in Libya, a source told CNN.

This story is fast developing. Moammar Gadhafi, 69, was in power for 42 years before being ousted in an uprising this year.

First Osama, now Gadhafi. Tyrants the world over should be afraid.

On another note, does this mean that Doc Brown can sleep good at night now?

Osama was simply a murderer and terrorist. Gadhafi could have gotten out alive but he was nuts. In Syria who knows. I just hope it makes it easier for Libya to transition to a stable country with some human rights.

It is amazing if you go back and look at all the despots who have been thrown out or died in the last five years. It does seem things are changing for good or worse is still unknown.

The worst thing about these long-term dictators is that they usually manage to murder or exile everyone who could have mounted a credible, just transition of power. It's in a despot's interest to ruin the next generation of potential leaders in every possible way, such as substituting indoctrination for education.

Then when they're finally deposed or assassinated, the place falls apart, and their followers say, "See? He was right -- this country can only be ruled by an iron hand." If they destroy their native institutions thoroughly enough, even their neighbors won't really want to see their 'stabilizing' influence go, for fear of war and huge influxes of refugees (see Korea, North.)

Good riddance to the 'Great Leader' anyway. Long overdue.

You know, I was just saying the other day that with all the high-profile trials we've seen in the past year or so, Johnnie Cochran must be sick if he's not involved in any of them. I thought I was just talking out of my ass like always.
