And of all people, Al Gore (!) seems to be the source.

On his future in film: "I actually just performed a voice-over role in a movie last week. I am reprising my role as a disembodied head in Futurama, which is being made into a movie. There are a significant number of people who appear not to know or care that I was Vice President of the United States, but who are very tuned into the fact that I uttered the immortal line, 'I have ridden the mighty moonworm.'" (Oh, please. What did you THINK it meant?)

Ok, this might be old news, but is this TRUE? I know Futurama the SERIES is coming back, but was there ever a movie announcement in my time living under a rock?

"That's the thing: Maybe he'll be up and down this season, but when he's up, is there another center in the league quite like him? He protects the rim, passes out of double teams, has great hands around the basket, up-fakes on his jump-hooks, rebounds in traffic, even has a motor that keeps going and going (unlike a stiff like Eddy Curry). I'm not sure what's missing here. This is stunning. This is startling. There's almost no precedent for it. Just what the Lakers needed: More obscenely good luck. Meanwhile, I have to watch Al Jefferson whip jump-hooks off the front of the rim for the third straight season. I will now pour scalding hot water down my pants."

I haven't heard anything about a movie. There was talk of doing a couple direct-to-DVD movies as a means of bringing back Futurama, but then those plans changed to doing regular episodes.

Personally, I like his "I'm a tenth level Vice President!" line.

The DVD movies are all that's being made, as far as I know. I heard some time back about some new episodes on Cartoon Network, but nothing is certain on that.

The DVD releases, and I've heard there's 4, are definitely happening. It's a straight-to-DVD movie, is what he's referring to.

No, that was official. Comedy Central put out a press release and everything. It's actually the state of the direct-to-DVD movies that are up in the air right now. I'm sure, if they're far enough in the process to have recorded voices, should they never wind up releasing them, they'll at least chop them up into new episodes of the show.

Is this going to be recurring trend here in America that we repopularize show that we actually liked that got canceled and brought back. It sort of reminds of the Austin Powers deal where the movie flopped in theaters but the rental sells revived the concept of more movies.

Apparently something about those two show that really have have appeal to get new production for them. Family Guy and Now Futurama. Neat stuff.

There's a entry on imdb.com for Futurama: Bender's Big Score. Going straight to video in 2007. I have to say, I'm looking forward to this more than The Simpsons movie.

There's definitely a DVD movie that is being produced right now for release next year, and that must be it.

What's in question is whether or not the new episodes are going to be part of the movie chopped up into the episodes, or if they will be all original. Apparently, there is some deal in the works on that to air the movie on TV broken apart.

This whole thread at IMDB has people arguing over it, so we don't have to do the work here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0471711/board/nest/41059687

Semi-related note: there's a Futurama trailer for An Inconvenient Truth on IGN.

Al Gore: *sigh* Yes, I'm a burnt-out cop, picking up chicks in my hybrid pimpmobile...

Ok seriously, can Al Gore PLEASE join the Futurama cast full-time? He seems to know just how to bring the funny.
