12 dead and up to 30 injured when a Major in the US Army went on a shooting spree.

The Major is dead, and two others are under arrest.

Horrible day. This is just sad.

The majuor is alive apparently. I can't wait to hear what the hell this was all about. Reminds me of the guy that cut the head of another guy off on a greyhound bus, selling his laptop right before hand. The major was giving away furniture apparently.

They say it was about him not wanting to be deployed because he disagreed with the wars.

That's pathetic, if true.

How typical is it that in a country where many people can not get the health care coverage they need a guy shoots 40-odd people, gets shot himself, then has emergency surgery which saves his life...that will probably end when he gets executed after receiving the death penalty?

(If that doesn't make sense, well, I watched a bunch of live coverage of this and I think the cable news channels (all of 'em) cost me about 20 IQ points.)

The animal that did this is now awake and "aware he is a suspect." Meanwhile, Chris Matthews on MSNBC asks "Since when is it wrong to contact alqeda?"

Really? An officer in the UNITED STATES ARMY contacts members of a terrorist organization and Matthews doesn't think its WRONG?

The PC'ing of this is getting WAY out of hand.

I'd rather have him survive so he knows he's gonna get punished than allow him to get the easy way out and end it himself.
But I do understand that it's sad that so many lose their lives cos they cannot pay for their health and this sob isn't dying in the most painful way possible right now.

Really? We need to say something about those who 'lose their lives' because they can't afford health care?

Is there a big pile of dead, poor people where you live or something?

Everybody dies, nobody is immune to it.

The guy and his actions are what this thread was supposed to be about, and dragging another issue into it seems to take away from all the people who died.

Apparently, they've had problems at Ft. Hood for some time.

At Army Base, Some Violence Is Too Familiar

Fort Hood is still reeling from last week’s carnage, in which an Army psychiatrist is accused of a massacre that left 13 people dead. But in the town of Killeen and other surrounding communities, the attack, one of the worst mass shootings on a military base in the United States, is also seen by many as another blow in an area that has been beset by crime and violence since the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq began. Reports of domestic abuse have grown by 75 percent since 2001. At the same time, violent crime in Killeen has risen 22 percent while declining 7 percent in towns of similar size in other parts of the country.

The stresses are seen in other ways, too.

Since 2003, there have been 76 suicides by personnel assigned to Fort Hood, with 10 this year, according to military officials.

A crisis center on base is averaging 60 phone calls a week from soldiers and family members seeking various help for problems from suicide to anger management, with about the same volume of walk-ins and scheduled appointments.

If we're going to send these troops into combat (for dubious reasons, I might add), then it should be a no-brainer that we invest in the necessary psychiatric evaluations to make sure they are not having a significant breakdown as a result of their experiences.

Of course plenty of people will be pouring over these for the next week or so, but even without any dirt coming out of it, I'm thinking that the $100,000,000 income figure is going to get noticed by some of her blue collar core.
