I guess it's been too many years since I made a "I hate April Fool's Day posts and don't want to see any of them on this board" proclamation. Try a few live-CDs if you are going to try Linux. Try to find one that picks up all of your wifi / chipset stuff without any configuration. Linux Mint is what I'm running on an older Lattitude E6500 and it picked up everything right off of the bat.
