| #1 Posted on 3.7.06 1343.35 | Instant Rating: 4.40 | The biggest trade has just taken place between the Oilers and Ducks as Edmonton sends Chris Pronger to the Ducks for Joffrey Lupul, prospect Ladislav Smid, Anaheim's first-round choice in 2007, a conditional first-round pick and Anaheim's second-round pick in 2008.
Also, Steve Yzerman announcing his retirement (about time) was announced. For a while it seemed as if he would be going the Roger Clemen's route and keeping everyone in the dark as the season began without him.

Hey, I'd say that the retirement of The Captain needs a bit more than "about time". Stevie Y has been the class of the NHL for the past 23 seasons, and although age and a wonky knee has caught up with him, it is most certainly the end of an era in hockey. Finally getting to see him play live this past November was one of the thrills of my sporting fan life. | Omar Padilla

Oh yeah, it wasn't meant as "About time...(something negative)."
It was just bound to happen one of these days and now we can all start looking back at how much of a bad ass Stevie Y was/is.

I thought the rumour du jour was that Pronger had knocked up a sportscaster, hence the quick request for a trade.

I realize this is only speculation on your part (or whoever's), but I was thinking about this today. How odd is it for a guy to fly to Edmonton, check out the city WITH his wife, buy up land and a home, sign a five-year contract because they like the city that much... and then less than a year later be asking to get out ASAP.
The only thing I could think of is along the lines of what you mentioned. Just that another woman was involved. Where did you hear or read this anyway?

No matter what the reason is, WTF?! The Ducks now have Pronger and Niedermayer. Unless you play them on one line somebody is gonna be playing less minutes.

I don't think that's odd at all. I can EASILY see Mrs. Pronger going along with everything, thinking Edmonton will grow on her and she should give it a chance seeing as her husband wants to go there and HE makes the $8 mil and all, then her realizing Edmonton ISN'T growing on her and her growing unhappy until he finally notices something and they have THIS conversation:
CP: Honey, you just don't seem happy. Mrs. P: No, it's fine. CP: Look, you can tell me anything, it's OK. Mrs. P: OK. I HATE living in Edmonton. CP: Why didn't you say so? Mrs. P: I thought it might get better but it's not. Sorry. CP (on phone with agent): Get me outta Edmonton.
That's not abnormal marriage-stuff, IMO.

EDIT: TSN confirms the story HERE; Tang signed for 3 years. $5m in the first, $5.375 in the next two seasons.

Sure, anything's possible... but Edmonton is a beautiful city. More than that, it's buzzing these days AND it's extremely hip (it gets all the big concerts that Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver get). I'm not from there or anywhere close, but I've been there enough to know that it's just like any other city. I highly, highly, highly doubt this could ever, ever, ever be the reason. But then I'm just speculating with the rest of us. If she just didn't like the city, why would they need to move in such a hurry?
And it turns out the rumor about the sportscaster is pretty much set in concrete. Seems to be that Pronger knocked up the 19 year-old hotty college grad who covers sports for City TV in Edmonton. I work in Canadian TV, and asked a couple friends from college who work for City TV affiliates where I live. Consider it real if you want to, as this rumor is a fact for them - allegedly, the wife is under the belief that moving to another city will solve the problem of Pronger stepping out on her... lol.

It may very well be hipster paradise, but that statement made me chuckle a little. Not that I don't live on the road to nowhere, mind you.

I'd never consider Edmonton to be HIP, but it's a really fun place to live. I had some great times out there, amd the cycling is amazing there.
I'm surprized I haven't heard much about the Leafs so far. ANy rumours on the future of Eric Lindros?

Me also likey. Shanahan is going to fit in well and take some pressure off of Jagr to lead & produce. This probably puts an end any chance of signing Sykora & Rucinsky due to cap space but I can live with that.
(added 7/13 because it just looks good)
And thank you Neil Smith for taking Tom Poti off the Rangers' hands
