As is "communism". For example, for certain people "communist" equals "evil", which is just as ignorant and stupid as "democracy" equaling "evil". I think it's fairly obvious that that's where spf was coming from. The Chinese and Soviet governments did and do some really horrible things, but neither one has been a communist nation for a long time. They have (or had, in the USSR's case) some of the trappings but they stopped being truly communist states early on, if you could say they ever really were. Just like we were never really a "true" democracy.

You set the tone by saying spf was "spouting off like an angst-ridden 16 year old", Palp. If you want things to stay civil it helps to start them off that way.

Nate is correct. They are a dictatorship pretending to be communist just as they Soviet Union was. Communism was dead there long ago. Communism as a theory was an interesting idea but doomed before it was ever tried. A flawed system unable to be what it was envisioned to be.
To get to back to the Taiwan portion of this, the President of Taiwan gets re-elected after winning 50.12 percent of the vote, while the challenger received 49.88 percent. To make it even more interesting, the election took place within a day of the President and Vice-President of Taiwan being shot while riding in an open-air jeep. That has to wreak of a set-up, since: What the hell are the President and Vice-President doing traveling together? What would possess them to ride an open-air vehicle, thus making BOTH leaders vulnerable to attack, and possibly causing great upheaval with China sitting around to pick up the pieces in a case of quelling disorder?
It's not every day that I decide to post something from "American Conservative" magazine, but I think this encapsulates a lot of the discussions about foreign policy we've had on this board and that have gone on in the country, so I put it out t...
