2008 SHOWS NOT RENEWED
Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?; Do Not Disturb; Holl In The Wall; King Of The Hill; Prison Break; Sit Down, Shut Up; Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles; The Moment of Truth

RETURNING SHOWS - PREMERING IN FALL
American Dad, America's Most Wanted, Bones, Cops, Dollhouse, Family Guy, Fringe, House, Lie To Me, So You Think You Can Dance, The Simpsons, 'Til Death

RETURNING SHOWS - PREMERING MIDSEASON
24, American Idol, House

NEW SHOWS - PREMERING IN FALL

Brothers - starring the NFL's Michael Strahan and Daryl "Chill" Mitchell (previously appeared in "Ed", "Veronica's Closet", and I remember him from "The John Larroquette Show"). A former NFL player returns to his hometown to help his family and wacky hijinks ensue. Oh, and their father is played by Carol Weathers.

The Cleveland Show - I feel like we've been talking about this forever. I'm sure you're aware what's going on. If not, Family Guy spinoff.

Glee - I apparently didn't realize that only the premiere of Glee is airing in the summer. The pilot airs Tuesday, May 19th, and then the show proper runs in the fall. "An uplifting comedy musical series with biting humor and a soundtrack of hit music from past and present."

The Wanda Sykes Show - takes over in the Mad TV timeslot on Saturday nights. Part regular talk show, part "Real Time With Bill Maher."

NEW SHOWS - PREMERING MIDSEASON

Human Target - Based on the popular DC Comics series. Christopher Chance is the Human Target, a private detective and bodyguard who protects people by impersonating them. Mark Valley (Fringe, Boston Legal) stars as the titular character, and is joined by Chi McBride (Pushing Daisies, Boston Public) and Jackie Earle Haley from the Watchmen movie.

Past Life - Inspired by the book The Reincarnationist (The W at Amazon) by M.J. Rose, Past Life is a drama series about psychologists who investigate your past lives to see if they might be responsible for what is happening to you today. Of course it's got the believer partnered up with the cynic, which we've seen seemingly a hundred times since The X-Files.

Sons of Tucson - family comedy about three young brothers who hire a schemer to stand in for their father when he goes to prison.

The Terminator cancellation was expected, but still disappointing.

The real bummer is House not returning until midseason! What's up with THAT?

Bones is actually renewed for TWO seasons.

Dollhouse returning really shocked me. I guess I'll watch those DVDs over the summer and give Joss and Eliza another chance. I also feel like a tool because a couple of years ago I was supersmug about Friday Night Lights getting a season 2 after all the doomsaying over its future, and then I went and did the same to Dollhouse. Mea culpa.

Yes, Dollhouse officially lives. I did hear that part of the compromise ie the budget cuts was that it would no longer be on Fridays, I wonder if they going to throw it on Thursdays besides Bones to get some of those Whedonverse fans to come on over? I did hear Bones is signed for another season past this one, David B. always seems to pick a winner. I am disappointed that last night's King of the Hill was the last one, it kinda went out with a humpf. I expected the Cleveland show to be on Sundays to take that spot and all Seth has to do is wait for the Simpsons to finally die and make another cartoon show to finally own the Sunday night block. Damn, marketing and business majors should have a class soley on his ability to take a defunct show and somehow create a giant franchise out of it. Its this generation's Star Trek.

I have not yet seen a commercial for this show, and I'm pretty sure I'm already sick of them.

Past Life doesn't really sound like my kind of thing, but it does have Richard Schiff (Toby from The West Wing), which will probably earn it a try from me.

I don't think I really want to watch a sitcom about Michael Strahan going back home after retiring, but you couldn't do better for the parents than Carl (Apollo Creed) Weathers and the always-wonderful CCH Pounder.

I don't get the logic of letting Terminator die, unless FOX really expects the movie to tank at the box office. And that's not a bad guess to be making, as the movie looks truly awful.

How many times are they going to let Wanda Sykes crash and burn in primetime?

This sounds suspiciously like "Slowly Rotating Black Guy" from last night's Family Guy.

With all the great shows being canceled these days nobody has really mentioned the odd success story that is Friday Night Lights. It didn't look like it would get a Season 2 but it did, then got a Season 3 thanks to the deal with DirecTV and now DirecTV and NBC have agreed on two more seasons. Friday Night Lights going on this long is more shocking than any renewal or cancellation. I'm not really sure of the details of their deal but it makes me wonder if other shows could survive with DirecTV deals.

I like Bones. It might not be the best show on television, but it's solid viewing every week. I just find it a little sad that with the two new seasons Bones is now going to be longer than Angel and that doesn't seem right.

Lisa de Moreas @ the Washington Post had a good post about this, this morning. It essentially comes down to Terminator being a Warner Bros produced show, so Fox has less to gain if does take off after the movie.

With shows Fox owns, like Dollhouse, they're getting a cut of the DVD money and whatever Hulu money there is, and apparently those other revenue streams are growing important enough that it's not worth keeping around borderline shows where you're not getting those streams.

Strahan has a good natured charisma, Mitchell can be very funny and is a pretty good actor. Pounder is always reliable.

Throw in Carl Weathers and baby, you got a stew goin'.

I'll give it a chance.

That's true. Let's look at FOX's shows next season and see who produces them:

20th Century Fox Television: 24, American Dad, America's Most Wanted, Bones, The Cleveland Show, Cops, Dollhouse, Family Guy, Glee, Lie To Me, The Simpsons, So You Think You Can Dance, Sons of Tucson

Warner Bros. Television: Fringe, Human Target, Past Life

NBC Universal Television: House

Sony Pictures Television: 'Til Death, Brothers

Fremantle Media: American Idol

So with that in mind, I have to say the 'Til Death renewal (even though it was announced back in January) is a bit of a surprise. It's been jerked all around the schedule in its (soon to be) 4 seasons. I'm going to guess that Sony Pictures Television kept the price low to give Fox incentive for a fourth season. Four seasons will give it 80+ episodes, which should be enough to sell the show for off-network strip syndication (5 airings a week).

See, I got a "Crossarmed Opposites" vibe out of reading this. Still, as long as they have Apollo in it, I'd give it a fighting chance.

This morning I find out that "Til Death" is being renewed (which is good) ... now I find that Sarah Connor is officially shit-canned (which is bad).

What a roller coaster of emotions I'm experiencing today!

Wow...King Of The Hill is being cancelled? That show lasted a lot longer than I had expected.

Surprized (and happy) to see Dollhouse continue, but saddened to see Terminator go.

I'll pass on the Wanda Sykes show. Sorry, but she does absolutely NOTHING for me.

Didn't we know quite a while back that this was the last batch of episodes ordered for the show? (I'm not seeing it in any archived threads, so maybe I'm just confusing it with "Futurama" or something.)

It's not prime time, it's late night! By the way, that reminds me, they finally cut loose Spike Feresten as well... I never, ever, ever watched TALKSHOW. I bet I would have liked it if only I'd ever tried it.

Yeah, they did say that this year was going to be the last one. It's just that they have been saying that about the last 3 seasons or so, so if there are those who are a little skeptical about it being gone, that's no big surprise to me.

Actually, looking at the episode list at wikipedia, they still have as many as 6 eps. left to show next season. So I guess it isn't totally cancelled just yet.

Her stand-up act is very funny. Sadly, she can't act to save her ass. Whoever she's blowing to keep getting shows, I hope they give her the clap.
