Apparently the conditions in Ft Bragg are horrible. Here's a video one dad of a soldier put together to show what they live with.

This story's like a week old. Fortunately, many repairs have already happened, and more are scheduled to happen, so we can now say "were" instead of "are." UNfortunately, we're left with the impression that it takes YouTube clips to get action. Now let's all point fingers!!!

This is the same barracks I lived in back in 1976. If not the exact same building, the same complex. I was in Bravo company. It looks about the same inside. We used to paint it ourselves.

We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.

My Saturday was ruined last week because of this. Even here in Korea our barracks had to be inspected to see if there was anything crazy going on like there was there. Since they're checking for defaults they mine as well check and see how clean the room is, right? Anyway lets just say I can't wait to get back to the states and not have to live in barracks anymore.

All those old barracks (The ones they showed in the video were known as the "new" barracks back in '76) in the big training forts are in trouble. Ft Leonard Wood is still using barracks constructed as Temporary during WWII. Same for Ft Knox. Fre hazzard too - all wood. Heck, until fairly recently, you could smoke in them.

It's a different army now, though. We had to clean and maintain our barracks - so, while there might have been some problems (we had the same water problems described in the video), they were clean as a whistle and well painted and we would never have had to put up with broken toilet seats. Our CO would have killed us during inspections for that crap. I imagine maintenance is by contractors.

I was just down at Bragg in December working at the Warfare center (putting in the HVAC system) and the green beanies have nice barracks, but the Division mostly looks the same as it did back in the day.

That mold does look bad.

The linked video above was pulled due to copywrite...who owns a copywrite to the US army, anyhow?

I'm not sure if it's the same video, but I found one on Youtube that shows a lot about how the Bragg barracks are.

During my years in the Canadian Reserves, I don't recall anything even remotely as disgusting. I find it amusing how the American government can't find enough people to join the Forces, when such videos exist. How can anyone be proud to serve their country when they call these conditions "home"?

American or Canadian, I'm proud of all armed forces personnel. Even if this is an extreme exception to the rule, they deserve so much better than that.

Actually, while the Army's a tad down, the Marines are turning people down. The airborne is a full strength, turning volunteers away.

http://usmilitary.about.com/od/joiningthemilitary/a/07recruiting.htm

Oct 11 2007

The Department of Defense has announced its recruiting statistics by the active and reserve components for Fiscal Year 2007. A "Fiscal Year" runs from October through December.

All of the active duty branches met or exceeded their recruiting goals for the fiscal year. On the Reserve side, four of the six reserve componants met or exceeded their recruiting goals.

The Army's recruiting sucess was not without price. During Fiscal Year 2007, only 79 percent of the new recruits entering the Army possessed a high school diploma. The DOD standard is that at least 90 percent of new recruits should have a high school diploma. The other services met or exceeded the 90 percent goal.

That last number is worrisome

The next two years of recruiting will be even more challenging for the Army. Congress has decided to increase the total size of the Army by 74,000 by 2010 to 547,000 active duty, reservists and National Guard. This will require significantly higher recruiting goals than the 80,000 goal which has challenged the Army for the past two years.

Yeah. Next, they'll have to take Canadians.
