Adoniccg to a rrceesah at an Egsinlh usitveriny ... this is much more difficult to read.

Hmmmm, reading my cut-and-pasted post over again, it seems that the whole words weren't scrambled, but just each syllable in the words. A-occdr-nig, uin-erv-tisy. So maybe people read syllables and not whole words after all.

Jeez, if you can't trust an anonymous stranger to post accurate information on an internet messageboard for me to steal, what is the world coming to?

Wisconsin Badgers: 2-1 (Well...Obviously...Casino Management Majors make good football players....)

Minnesota Vikings: 2-0 (That's a bit more like it. Good game all around...Though they shouldn't have let Chicago get their hopes up.)

With high school English teachers telling their students that the spelling in their essays doesn't count for marks, it's a damn good thing we've been conditioned to read jibberish. I don't know that this study is a good thing, though. I can already see it being used as a crutch in the education system to help graduate the dumb kids.

But! be this? an lesson... in the fine; art for Grammar (or is) This very more: "of an". spelling thread,

The memories of my family outings are still a source of strength to me. I remember we'd all pile into the car - I forget what kind it was - and drive and drive. I'm not sure where we'd go, but I think there were some trees there. The smell of something was strong in the air as we played whatever sport we played. I remember a bigger, older guy we called "Dad." We'd eat some stuff, or not, and then I think we went home. I guess some things never leave you.

If a kid asks where rain comes from, I think a cute thing to tell him is "God is crying." And if he asks why God is crying, another cute thing to tell him is "Probably because of something you did."

I'm more worried about some of my students using this as an excuse for the truly horrific papers and outlines I received yesterday. Oh well, it's that time of year when all adjunct faculty begin to ask themselves, for the umpteenth time, "Why am I still doing this?".

This isn't surprising to me at all...educators have known for a long time that people *don't* read by sounding out words, which is why the phonics-based approach to reading is usually a bad one.

Actually, phonics is a crucial skill for reading proficiency. It's just not the *ONLY* skill. The systems that incorporate phonics into their teaching as part of a balanced program succeed at a higher rate than systems that either ignore or use exclusively a phonics base.

Oh, yes, I agree with that. Phonics has its place as part of a balanced approach; I was refering to programs that put it front and center. Sorry if it seemed otherwise.
